What kind of book is it?

And what’s wrong with Word? :)
I’ve done a stupid thing. I am in the process of writing a book (currently about half written) which I plan to self-publish, either entirely or with the help of a publishing company. Or secret option number 3 I don’t know about yet. I’m writing it in LaTeX but does anyone know what format publishers tend to prefer? Please don’t say Word. Any other words of wisdom from those that have been down this path already?

It will either be a book on physics, or the contents of my recycle bin, depending on how it turns out. The jury is still out on that one.
There nothing wrong with Word if you’re only writing a few pages. Not that great for formatting big jobs though, one wrong move and the file implodes and no matter what you do, it always looks like Word.

The author writes the words, then gives it to a designer to format into a book so whatever software you use to write shouldn’t make any difference.
If you need someone to set up the actual document for print, give me a shout.
That’s good to know, I may take you up on that if I ever finish it, thanks. Is this something you do for a living or have some experience with?
My intention was to use TeX so I could format it into print or ebook relatively easily myself. Maybe paying a professional would make more sense, unless I want it to look like it was written on a beer mat.

If you want to knock up a one off test book i really recommend Blurb - the quality is great and for producing a cheap proof it's ideal.

I suggest you contact Alex? The Flying Banana on here. He has self published. See thread below .

Take a look at Affinity Publisher. Professional software at a sensible price, (no annual/monthly fees), and currently 50% off for Black Friday weekend.
Will do everything you want, including placing drawings and diagrams etc.

As above, blurb is ok for a short run / test.
KDP is where you want to be of you’re going the self publishing route*
*I’ve self published a children’s book so this may not be relevant to you.
