    Old rupee notes

Hi all - I have about 25,000 rupees in old 100 & 500 notes. These went out of circulation around 10 years ago I think and I’m unsure if they have any value in the UK? Google doesn’t really help me much and my local currency converter will not accept them. Anyone got any ideas aside from a trip to India where you can still change them I think (again Google is not clear)?

Try and find someone who goes to India regularly and will buy them for £ here in the UK?

Or try an Indian bank with branches in the UK?

The government decided to change the notes overnight. It was mayhem. I was in India at the time and there was only a short duration to either bank the old notes or exchange the notes.

I missed the deadline and it was computer says no at the bank. It may be worth trying ICICI or State Bank of India here. Or a currency exchange.

I may be mistaken, but I think you could only take 10,000 rupees in and out of India.

I’ve no idea of the value but if Your stuck with them doesn’t Amnesty International boxes at airports take old bank notes? Pretty sure I’ve handed money into envelopes collected on planes for charity

Things may have changed but INR used to be a restricted currency which made it very difficult to do anything with it outside of India.
So I’m not sure you can even get them via a currency exchange outside of India.
That is one of the reasons people used to exchange it personally with people that could pay them the GBP equivalent.

Thank you all very much. Airport currency box is a good idea, I’d not thought of that. Not sure it’s a good idea to take them into India as officials will pick you up on anything given the chance but I will try bank of India as there is one in Leicester.

    Appreciate the replies.

If you've found a practical solution, I'm going to Mumbai for a week on the 23rd.
