Thread: Rolex Sub Date Early 90s

    Rolex Sub Date Early 90s

Dad dropped round his early 90s Sub Date over the weekend. He doesnt wear it much and wants me to put in a new link. I keep pestering him to wear the damn thing.

Funny story he bought it from his mate when he done security work back in the day for £500, pretty much for a few years after his mate was trying to buy it back.

He's always said it would be mine one day (one reason I've held off looking at Subs), but no reckons it will probably go straight to my youngest when he's 18! Only another 16yrs then!!!

Anyways thought I'd wear around the house for a few days whist working at home. Damn I now see the appeal of these 5digits Subs. When I got into this hobby - Sub was always the one, roughly 8yrs ago I almost purchased a maxi case no date, yet for a Kitchen fit on the house we bought, that didn't happen and later got a Panerai, since then BB58 and i have to say that's always scratched that itch, even tried on the new 41mm date before Christmas and thought it was to big compared to the BB58.

Now I'm considering looking for a 14060m 2 liner, when i have some additional funds, instead of going back to a 3861 Sapphire Speedy, am I crazy!

I do remember wearing this about 6yrs back and thinking 'now I know why the sweet spot is 40mm' at the time I had my 45mm U Boat & then 44mm Panerai.

On a separate note & my dad doesnt have the OG box, where best to look for one (legit of course)

Totally agree. Those pesky drilled lugs allowing all that dirt ingress and seizing up the spring bars. Absolute nightmare to repair and hugely expensive

Thanks I’ll drop an email as I know his inbox/ PM on here is permanently full. Looking at their website I don’t think they do online sale & postage.

Thanks, wore it again, & now think I really want a 14060m 2 liner.

Annoyingly wish that was the watches I picked up when I got into this all - but I’m sure we’ve all wished that.

More frustratingly it’s put a niggling doubt in my head on BB58 & I’ve not had any other watch do that!

Guess a question to ask the forum, any one own 14060m 2 liner, BB58 & I guess Speedy 3861.

Is it rose tinted specs that make me think I want the Rolex, do I go back get a Speedy again (now I appreciate what I had and like in a chronograph).

FWIW I did own all three, not all at the same time in fairness. The only one I miss is the Sub and definitely want to own again.

The BB58 was a substitute for it for a while but I could never get the bracelet fit 100% right and the faux rivets are just meh. It wasn’t getting worn and got moved on early this year.

The Speedy was the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary and I felt was just like all the others I’ve owned. A great classic watch but now I think is massively overpriced.

Honestly if someone put a gun to my temple and said i could only wear one watch forever, it would be a 14060M or 16610.

I had one of the m new back in 1995. the cost was £1820.00. And just look at the prices now nearly 30 years on.
I think a lot of the added "value" came about when Rolex changed the case shape and clasp. Not to (what seems) many peoples' taste.

That watch went a long time ago now. But, have replaced it with a 2007 mint example, SELs, no drilled lugs, engraved rehaut but still the classic case rather than the current "lego" one.

I’ve emailed Haywood store regarding potential period correct box & travel pouch. Would make a good Xmas gift for the old man.

Nice. I have the BB54 rubber strap which I switch on the BB58 when I fancy a change.

If I do decide to go down the Sub route I’ll probably keep the 58 on the rubber or nato.

Over the next month I’ll try and pop into WatchFinder and see if the have a 2 liner 14060m to view. Least get a fit on the wrist which might help make up my mind.
