Alex Scott for me, if they are going to keep the bit about underpants in the contract.
There goes our unbiased anchor of MOTD…. It’s amazing he presented for so long without revealing who he supports…
Mark Chapman next I hope
Alex Scott for me, if they are going to keep the bit about underpants in the contract.
Shearer for me please.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
I hope he goes to another channel and does the same. Not because I care one jot about football; I never watched one whole MOTD but I found him an excellent host, and it seems the ratings were high too. I also never heard of any biased opinion expressed on his program, unlike say Fiona Bruce arbitrating QT, or LK interviewing Bozo.

I'm sure it'll be Mark Chapman. Glad Lineker's leaving, good riddance.
Hopefully Chapman (he's the natural successor although I'm sure the BBC will go down an obscure route), JJ must be kicking himself as it looked like he was a shoe-in for the role...
I couldn’t care less what GL gets up to off air and in his private life, and what he chooses to say or not say.
But, several million quid to make a few quips now and again, when I am just as content watching Chappers do the same for a good chunk less than Lineker extracts from the licence fee.
Being taxed to pay his vast wages should be on one of those BBC scammer programs they are so obsessed with lately.

thought he was a good presenter and liked his allegiances to his boyhood club - Shearer is the same for the Toon. Just hope the replacement is someone decent and the Beeb don’t mess with the format.
Anyone but Alex Scott - not because she’s a woman, but because she is a terrible anchor and presenter. Chappers please!
Woosh!!! 🤣
Totally agree on his capabilities as a presenter…. I thought he was excellent, and I shall miss his charming little asides about Leicester
Yeah…. It’s not as if he’s one of Leicesters most famous sons! Or would turn up in LCFC underpants to present or anything?!!!
I agree with Chappers, although Jermaine Janas was being lined up to replace him until his fall which has suddenly seen the rise of Theo Walcott. Read into that what you will.
On a personal note Gary Lineker is the reason I stopped going to Everton. He cost us the double in 1986. In 1985 most of the midfield and forwards were scoring 10+ goals a season. When Lineker joined it was all about passing the ball to him. Sure, he scored 40 goals, but the rest scored hardly any. After one season he buggers off to Barca and Everton return to how they were playing before and won the league again.
To be honest I'm not keen on any of them, they all just seem to love themselves.
I think it goes with the territory, unavoidable...Paid top money to spaff opinion on about the national obsession- distraction check. Treated like their worth celebrating and their opinions shape public discussion- debate check. No expectations or pressures to be productive, meet weekly-monthly-quarterly targets check...You´d love yourself too you land a soft gig like that, no?
Y´know who I find smug to the point of almost ruination of the show... the dreadful part feline- part woman Fiona Bruce who presents AR, always, always pleased with herself like she´s just had the cream. Now Hugh Scully, he was da man .

Dangerously close to BP territory here.
As a presenter, he seemed pretty knowledgable (of course, everyone in Britain knows more about football than everyone else...) and as for what they pay him, well that's up to the management - It's not as though we pay a Lineker tax on top of the licence.
As I don't watch MOTD very often and consider most footballers to be cliche machines, though, I don't really care who presents it.
I'm sure Gary's sick as a parrot and the new presenter will be over the moon, as will the naysayers, but careers are a game of two halves and he gave all he had and got the result he deserved.
If you don't watch live TV you don't have to have a licence, your choice.

Breitling Cosmonaute 809 - What's not to like?
The Beeb pays them because of the audience they generate*, not because they bothered to ask. The equation is always "how many people will switch to another channel if he goes there, and how can we stop him?"
The offer made to lead coverage of the 2026 WC is a good illustration
* if they lose the audience, they will lose most football related matters to other channels. Apparently this is a concern

I don't watch football, but got the impression he was a very good presenter. Not clear from a brief look at the news if he jumped or was pushed.
You need a TV Licence if you:
- watch or record live TV on any channel or service
- use BBC iPlayer
You do not need a TV Licence to watch:
- streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus
- on-demand TV through services like All 4 and Amazon Prime Video
- videos on websites like YouTube
- videos or DVDs

I'm relieved. I don't care about his political pronouncements, I'm just sick of the matiness and complete analytical banality over which he's presided. For years the studio norm was three ex-players, all number 9s, and all besties. Insightful it was not.
Mark Chapman pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeease, by far the best and safest hands in the business.
Pretty sure it’ll be Alex Scott. The BBC wants more females into high profile jobs. Laura Woods and Kate Abdo both doing well for their channels.
There's a lot of envy and jealousy here.
Lineker's "vast" wages are in line with the amount paid by Sky to Carragher & Neville and I'd say he's a lot better value, though I confess that "blokes on TV talking football" is something that generally leaves me cold.
The BBC have said that that they didn't offer him a new contract, implying that they're simply moving him on, but there are some weasel words there. They'd have been happy to offer him a new one, but at a reduced rate, in line with other recently high-level BBC presenter contracts, all of which are coming in with big reductions on renegotiation. Lineker took the view that he'd dropped his contract by £400k in 2021 and was not prepared to go further, hence no contract. You've also got to consider that he's in his early 60s and has said for several years that he can't keep this pace up forever, so he's choosing to step out at the top of his game, something we'd all love to do.
For all the naysayers, there can be no argument that he was massively successful as a player, and possibly even more successful in his second career as a television presenter. And now he's gone and set up Goalhanger Productions as a third act, this one arguably now more lucrative than either of the previous two. The Rest is Football/Entertainment/Politics/History/Money, plus Sherlock & Co are massive.
Plus he gets to still do a bit of TV presenting work for the World Cup but he gets his Saturday nights back and can work more behind the scenes on developing the Goalhanger brand.
Not a bad retirement.
Glad to see the back of him.
A great footballer but over the years he has turned into a very smug creature which really put me off.
Cheers,
Neil.
Didn't mind him but ridiculously overpaid so if he doesn't want to accept a reduced salary which is still a King's Ransom then fair play enjoy your retirement.
He’s not overpaid. He was paid his worth.
The same is true for most PL (or their European equivalent) footballers. The amounts are insane for a member of the public but rest assured that those paying those wages usually get their money’s worth, and not just on the pitch.
The same is true for GL. He has more money than he’ll be able to spend in his lifetime and as LBC was saying he’ll earn more on his other ventures. But accepting a second cut? Why should he?
It’s not like he’s been particularly well treated by his employer, is it?
'Against stupidity, the gods themselves struggle in vain' - Schiller.
He was nothing special, I found him quite a boring overly reserved man personally.
LolIf you're now saying premiership football players are not overpaid you have taken complete leave of your senses and it's time for a holiday.
It’s all about how you define overpaid. To you and me the amount of money is insane. But if you could earn me £twoM+/week I wouldn’t begrudge paying you £fourM/month.
It’s all about what having them on your payroll brings in.
'Against stupidity, the gods themselves struggle in vain' - Schiller.
Or................... To put into TZ-UK perspective:
A 6-figure salary, not begining with a 1, 2, or 3
The only thing I regret about that, her doing Football Focus etc, is while she's an ok compere she's left behind the thing she was really good at: I thought she was a very sharp analyst, really quick to read the game. Asking routine questions she doesn't get to do that any more.
His salary was never formally justified. There was no comparison to others to warrant such an absurd package. My heart is with the poor who don't watch the Beeb and have their money extorted from them.
Can’t see he’s been treated badly. Not sure anyone would stay with an employer for 25 years who treats them badly.
He has been very well paid for years and arguably well overpaid. Whether they did offer a contract or not is irrelevant, there was no way they could possibly have offered him similar terms.
"Formally justified" wtf. does that mean, he's the lead talent on a very popular Saturday night TV show, they get paid what the market dictates, the TV licence fee won't drop when he leaves that's for sure, tbh. he probably makes more money from his Podcast group now so can't be arsed listening to all the noise drummed up by the Mail etc. because he happens to have a political view that they don't agree with. Fwiw. he does put his money where his mouth is and has taken immigrants in and put them up in his home.

Haven’t watched anything with her on for a while. Is she havin’ any luck pronouncing the g on the end of words these days? Absolutely did my nut, that did. She also had a strange habit of emphasising a random word in a sentence.
As others have said, some perfectly capable females. No-one’s being asked to split the atom.

Well the rate for Lineker's last contract was £1.35m and 'the talent' have agents and they do know.
Even in the real world the market dictates what you get paid, if you're a bricklayer, doctor, etc, there's a market rate, these figures aren't just plucked from thin air.
