    Sheffield watch

    Hi all,

    I have an old Sheffield diver that is of no financial worth but some sentimental value.

    The quartz movement (M2188) has died and I would like to get the watch running again. Searching online, the M2188 movements that come up are larger ones for clocks, which is a little confusing.

    My questions for anyone who can help are as follows;

    Is there a suitable replacement movement that is the same size as the original M2188, or are they still available from somewhere?

    Secondly, how on earth do I release the stem and crown from one of these cheap movements? It appears to be a sealed plastic unit, with two visible screws. Removing the screws doesn't release the plastic rear, and without access, I can't see how to release the stem. I'm baffled! I'm aware that this is a lot of fuss for a knackered old cheap quartz watch but I'm sure you know how it is when there's a connection to one.

    Many thanks in advance for any help offered,

    Leon

    As far as I know (which isn't far), the M2188 movement is a quartz clock movement. I'm not sure that is the movement number. Can you remove what appears to be a plastic movement cover and see if there is any other numbers.

    Thanks for getting back to me Kaffe.

    Yes, that's been confusing me too. The only marking on the plastic case is M2188. I'll try again to get into it but it seems to be a sealed unit. I managed to get a jewellers driver into a slight split but it feels like I'm just going to split it open. I'll give it another go and get back to you if I find anything out. Thanks again.

    OK. Good luck. I've been trying to find some info on them without any luck so far. However it appears that the company has been restarted again. Might be worth contacting them.

    Thanks again! Yes, I’ve been in touch with the new owner but no reply yet. Fingers crossed. I managed to get the movement open but there were no other markings and the whole thing napped in half so it clearly wasn’t designed to be changed or fixed.

    I'm sure a decent watchmaker would be able to fit a modern replacement movement for not a lot. Would at least keep it usable.

    Thanks Kaffe. Being so cheap, it seems like it needs to be destroyed to get it out which is annoying. I’ll ask around with local watch repairers and keep my fingers crossed that Sheffield watches gets some stock in before Christmas! Thanks again.
