So how do they make money from this now? Still wouldn’t use them
Good news if this applies to watches…

So how do they make money from this now? Still wouldn’t use them
That’ll be the Xbox and black bay gone this week
Hopefully eBay is good for face to face
That explains why no 80% off seller fee offers for a couple of weeks. Will be interesting how they look to make their money, presumably from buyers at some point in the future....?
Wow! I ended a listing yesterday because the offer process had become a nightmare with different buyers getting offers at different times, so I couldn't amend the price.
I was going to wait for the 80% final fee offer but looks like I can just re-list.
They've lost so many users to FB and Vinted plus the HMRC publicity from last year hurt them hugely. They could choose to continue haemorrhaging private sellers or become more competitive; they chose the latter.
Obviously, in the long run, every company wants to have bigger market share and reduce competition but this move seems to just be to restore their position to what it was 10 years ago.
Interesting development. I gave up selling on ebay a couple of years ago after paying way too much fees (and other hassle)
Now Monofaker can list his £3.99 fake Casio for free.
Fees for business sellers have been climbing and climbing, deals for business sellers have all but disappeared.
Ebay have suggested that "after trialling this in Germany", charging zero fees to individuals gives them more disposable money which they then spend with the business sellers.
Great idea in theory, and if ebay still used PayPal for payments it would probably hold some weight, but with ebay paying sellers direct into bank accounts I can't see how that will benefit anybody other the seller.
And as someone with a business and a personal account I'm slightly annoyed that nothing is being done to benefit the business sellers - sales have been utterly dire this year.
Well it’s worth making hay whilst the sun shines. I’ve still got about £10 postage to pay but not around £15 in fees.
Business sellers don’t get zero fees and I expect buyers will have to pay something soon.
The income stays within eBay to pay for purchases, extras and postage etc; you have to request a withdrawal to your bank in the same way as a PayPal account.
The theory (and actuality it would appear from the trial) is that with the money sat there, you’re more likely to spend it on eBay than another platform.
I have had my balance paid to my bank weekly, automatically up until now but I’ll have to do it manually from the 16th of this month.
Wonder what is going to happen to the authentication process, who's going to foot the bill for that.
They buy from business sellers or from abroad, both of which still incur fees. They may start charging a buyers premium like the platforms that they are complaining against.
They have trialled it in Germany so obviously believe it will be of benefit to eBay even if it’s not immediately obvious to the rest of us exactly how it will do so.
Would eBay earn any interest on all the money they are holding in sellers accounts (hoping folk are too lazy or not desperate to withdraw it)?
And typically I finally make 2 sales there…yesterday and so still have to pay fees!
Well I’ll keep telling myself that’s what I expected to pay anyway and not cry at the lost cash!
In reality, it may mean that prices get more competitive as people may be less likely to boost their asking prices trying to offset some of the fees. For example my watches were priced significantly higher on eBay than I had they here with “TZ” prices.

I sold something yesterday which had been listed weeks ago and didn’t get charged.
I was told that if you have sales in excess of £1500pa they move you on to Business Seller basis and tell the HMRC too
That’s not entirely true, I believe HMRC can get details of anyone selling above £1000pa but eBay certainly don’t automatically move a seller to a business seller at £1500.
I’m still a private seller and this is my 90 day sales total. I do keep records and declare profits to HMRC though.
I did wonder why they stopped giving Nectar points this summer, but a wider strategy of trimming margins to maintain share of market makes a lot of sense.
I only sell watches and so there is never any profit only losses! ??
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Very similar for me Dave although my 90 day total is a couple of grand below yours. Ebay obviously consider my account a business as they regular send me invites to finance capital to 'grow my business' but have never pressured me to convert to a business account.
I also pay tax on the income via self assessment, is it possible it's a two way street and ebay are informed by hmrc that my / your tax is being paid? Or is it more likely that we such small fry that neither instition is concerned with our activities?
Yes, I get those offers too but, like all other offers of finance, they are ignored. As you though, they have never pushed me to become a business account.
I think HMRC are probably more interested in making sure they’re getting their tax than eBay are that it’s being paid. I wouldn’t imagine there’s any feedback from HMRC to eBay, data protection Wouk’s see to that.
I think the move is cause of vinted and depop steeling customers free to sell on there sites. But the buyer pays a buyers protection is where they make money. Buyer protection is mandatory on vinted
So this is probably in the pipe also your money sat in eBay account to pay for stuff on eBay purchases

Whether HMRC do anything with the information is an entirely different question and I suspect the answer is “highly unlikely” in 99.9% of cases.
I've sold a car, a handbag for the wife & my Blue Sub 16613 since April, eBay have moved me to a Business Seller account last month as those transactions amounted to over £16K
The fella I spoke to on the phone there nothing they can do it's a HMRC directive
He seemed astonished that I only had one eBay account, he said I should open a fresh account
& then close my old one
Don’t think HMRC dictate what kind of account eBay users have - it’s not a significant factor for tax purposes, surely.
If you create a new account then you lose all your feedback. Maybe it’s not an issue for some but I would be wary of dealing with a new account with no feedback.
Sold several items this morning that were listed last Sunday (before the new offer kicked in), and no fees at all. Very pleased.
I was charged fees for the items that were sold on 30th September.
It seems it is linked to when payment was made rather than listed date.
I know but further up there were a few comments saying that you would not be charged and hence my post for clarity.
3 items in 5 months makes you a business seller?! This is perhaps the rub of this eBay decision; maybe most people will eventually not qualify because they're classified as business.

As others have said, don’t believe it’s a HMRC directive. Business account or not they can still tax you.
