Last week with nice temps. Time to spray-paint the engine bay.

I making good use of this final week with higher temps in the afternoon. I'm prepping (filling, sanding, filling, sanding, etc) the engine bay of the Saab 96 I was given last November. The time between then and now was spent on welding, repairing the wiring loom and the rejuvenation of all under-bonnet parts apart from the engine. (Don't have an engine restored at the beginning of a restoration!).

The car is painted in Saab's 152G 'Marble White'. Better known as the colour of the iconic Saab 99 Turbo. My car was painted only once: the week before Christmas in 1979. And I was afraid that the colour had 'gone off' over the years. I took 2 body parts to a paint shop to have the colour scanned. Indeed! Current, new 152G doesn't match the colour on the car. But the database in the computer had an alternative solution: Lotus' C160 'Mint White' has a 99% match with the faded 152G from Saab. 99% is good enough for me.

Over the year I've watched Annies-VW on instagram. A Canadian lady has restored an old VW Beetle and she did the painting herself, in her barn So she inspired me to do the same, building a spray booth from wood and plastic. And, I'm not painting the complete car. Only under the bonnet and later the booth. I'll keep the patina of the ± 45 y/o paint on the outside

I had a supervisor. But I put her outside right after this picture. I don't want to harm the cat with the paint-related fumes and dust.

I assume that last photo was taken after you’d told her she was going outside. She doesn’t look very impressed!

Her looks are in line with her character... E.g. She bosses 52 kilo Rottweiler around without raising a paw.

The fine afternoon weather warms up the workshop enough for proper spraying. I've primed all surfaces and tomorrow I'll start sanding.

First layer is applied. *Proud! My iPhone has a lot of trouble capturing the correct shade of the paint. 2 two-pack rattle cans. My friend Bert, who used to run a paintshop for 40+ years, assured me that I would be able to achieve this result. Mind you, I need to polish it when the paint has hardened.

I went ahead today. Next week will be as good as this week, weather-wise. I figured: when I screw up this week, I'll have next week for a re-run. When I wait until next week, I might not have a chance for a second run.

When the resoration is finished, it will be great to enjoy its external patina and then open the bonnet to a gleaming, obviously cared for, engine and engine bay :)
