Would you not want to try them on to see if they suit you - it’s a big thing
Hi, just had my eye test, last time 2 years ago.
I need varifocal lenses.
I find the service at Specs avers is excellent but have seen various companies online much cheaper.
Are they worth using?
Thanks in advance.

I order multiple pairs from select specs every year, never had a problem and get 6-8 pairs for the price of 1 pair from the high street

I recently needed to replace my glasses. After my free eye test at my usual optician I looked at what was on offer. Theirs is a well staffed establishment offering a good service.
I like progressive lenses and with strong myopia, astigmatism and prism corrections I need a fairly top range lens material so that they are not too thick at the edges. Having looked through the frames on offer the estimate came to £255 for the frames and £870 for the lenses (1.74) - total £1 125. The last time I bought my specs from them I was astonished at the cost and so this time I decided to have a look around before buying anything.
To cut a long story short, up the road I found another optician, a one lady service, who checked the prescription and amended it before selling me frames for £149 and lenses (1.67) for £399 - total £548. I'd say shop around.
For myself I wouldn't buy lenses online as they need to be made to align with your pupils in the frames you choose. Hence all the measurements that the dispensing optician takes. It may not be too critical for simple prescriptions but I wouldn't like to chance it with mine.
The good thing about the optician I am now using is that she will dispense lenses for frames I have bought online. They don't carry the make that I wanted and so I've bought the frames and am about to take them to her in order to get the lenses.

Binoculars or a monocle.
If you need varifocals they need proper measuring stick with who you are happy with.
Bought my last pair online direct from Oakley and they were brilliant. Simple to order and arrived quickly with genuine Oakley lenses.
But then my prescription is not that complex, apart from the astigmatism.
The measurements they need are the pupil distance and I managed to get that done fairly easily.
Also bought a pair from Spex4less and equally painless and much cheaper than buying on the high street.
They also use the height of the pupil from the bottom of the frame to position the principle axis of the lens. That will vary according to the size of the glasses and how they sit on your nose / face. There are several variables in play:
Some of the sites I've looked at seem to do this using digital photographs. I expect that's OK for simple prescriptions but I'd rather not trust it for mine.
I buy direct from Oakley, reading, distance and sun glasses.Never had a problem. But I know my frame size and the style that suits me.
I've used glasses direct and they have been brilliant.
I used to buy single vision glasses online but with variafocals you need a optition to physically take measurements as to were the reading part of the lens goes and you can't do that online despite what they will tell you
When ordering online, just make sure you get your PD measured accurately. Optician's generally don't give you these on their prescription, but measure when buying specs from them. You can measure your own, with the most accurate method for short sightedness using an old pair of specs and a marker pen as this gives you an accurate PD for distance (using a ruler is slightly inaccurate as you are focussed too close). You can live with slight innacuracies, but when I've found it is wrong you tend to get a cross-eyed effect when taking your glasses on and off as your eyes have to adjust.
I believe you can get an optician to do the measurement and then use that to go online.
However, I am happy with the service I get from my local Vision Express; my understanding is that it is a franchise with one or more local optician; In our case it's a Romanian couple and I am happy to pay more if it helps keeping local jobs and shops in the High Street. Additionally, varifocals are very personal and sometimes they may feel uncomfortable, and your local optician is best placed to make sure they suit you.

Personally I concur on what has been advised. I would buy single focus online and bi-focals, but not varifocals. The larger the lens the better for varifocals. I was getting headaches when the lens wasn't large enough.
100% would not get vari's online, you need the bands of lens measured according to the glasses on your face.
Thread drift but maybe useful info:
I wear varifocals but like to wear sunglasses when driving in any bright daylight. My long distance vision is ok but I struggle with the dials and screen in the car when using non prescription sunnies. My optician recommended Maui Jim Readers, standard sunglasses with reading inserts. They work very well. Great for reading around the pool too.
I've bought varifocal sunglasses online. I had to send the first pair back because they'd got the balance wrong. They got it right 2nd time after I sent a photo of me wearing the glasses.
The second pair from a different online company were right first time. I was happy to do it with sunnies because they don't need to be perfect. I wouldn't do it for my everyday glasses though.
Doesn't Specsavers always have a 2 for 1 deal on? I bought a new pair just before Christmas and then got a pair of my sunglasses reglazed with the new prescription for £30.
I would never try to buy varifocal glasses online, getting them right with a traditional optician is hard enough. Ask yourself this question; do you want to be satisfied with your glasses or do you want to save money? Might get away with it with single prescription lenses but for varifocals it's a no-no.
Actually that is useful as I'm always taking my reading glasses and sunglasses when I'm round the pool. When did you buy yours from? I'm going away next weekend and they would be useful so I've just had a quick look at the Maui Jim website and not all of the limited styles are in stock, for the 2.0 magnification, and I can't seem to find out how long delivery takes if buying direct from them. Thanks.
Same for me. I've bought single prescription online in teh past and I was happy with the result. I got my first varifocals earlier this year. I spent a fair amount of time with the optician and the got the lens right first time. I doubt I could have got the same result with online. Like Onelasttime I might consider getting sunglasses but not my daily wearers.
I did buy the frame online and paid for a reglazing service at the local optician. I then used their multi pair discount to get a set of dedicated reading glasses.
Spec savers are fine. If you are going to get glasses get them fitted F2F. I tried buying from the net and it wasn’t as good. I ended up going into Specsavers to get them to fit properly.
