I know I know, it depends and all that malarkey, but a bit of fun.
I have a few timepieces but one stands out in my collection and certainly a contender in my view having worn today.
Can be a point in history, film, design or just for the hell of it.
So, let’s have them!!!!!!!!!!

To me, the most iconic watch in my life time has been the Omega Speedmaster Professional. It's certainly the most famous chronograph ever made. Some like it. Some don't. Nobody can deny its history.

When you think about it, there are a few contenders, but as above, the Speedy Pro has to be up there, as is the Submariner, Cartier Tank is in the mix too.
Cheers..

I'm talking as a movie buff but I really think you'd struggle to top the "Bond" Seamaster as an icon. It's almost 30 years since its introduction (Goldeneye - 1996?) and despite its many many variations the Omega Seamaster Bond is now synonymous with the franchise.
Annoyingly so, in fact, as most of us know that Commander Bond was very much a Rolex man on paper!
Submariner.
Seadweller, drilled lugs.
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Lots of watch icons, but surely The one has to be the Submariner.
The most famous watch from the world's pre-eminent watch brand, the brand recognised as exceptional by more people than any other, regardless of whether they're watch people or not
For me it will be Seiko Pogue.

Sub, no contest.
From a man in the street perspective, I’d say it’s the datejust.
I would say the humble Casio F-91 (or similar). A true classic in my opinion and that of the Design Museum.
Surely now a contender has to be the Apple Watch. They are everywhere, worn by everyone and sold in huge numbers.
The original range of Swatch watches which made watches fashionable and cheap. Swatch also pretty much both destroyed and saved the traditional watch market.
If I could put any single watch on display it would be the Omega Marine Chronometer. A huge amount of resources went into it, it was wonderfully expensive and remarkably accurate and was obscolete almost immediately. As a design I used to refer to it as my 'unmuggable' watch because no one in their right mind would give it a second glance. I don't know quite why this all makes it iconic though! Possibly overexposure to the Sub, Speedy and so on.
"A man of little significance"
Agree! It has to be considered in contemporary context, it was ground-breaking in what it provided at a very affordable price when it first came out. I wore one for work when my job involved getting my hands dirty and the stopwatch function was invaluable for timing stuff in the laboratory. Ideal running watch, for the first time it was possible to accurately time a run and that was very significant. Ideal watch for DIY, working under cars etc, swimming, and when it got dirty a scrub with a nailbrush and washing up liquid cleaned it up.
I'll be getting under my MGB shortly then going to the gym, Casio F-91 will be getting some use today! Not a watch I'd ever go out in, I don't like any black watch when smartly dressed, but they certainly do the job when getting your hands dirty.
It has to be the Submariner
Virtually everyone knows Rolex and if you asked them to draw a Rolex it would be a Submariner.
The Speedmaster is iconic if you have an interest in watches or space exploration. However most ‘normal’ people would not recognise one if asked.
The F-91 is a good shout, if for the wrong reasons. Bin Laden’s watch of choice.
G-Shock.......This one possibly.

Got to be the Speedmaster.
Sure, lots of people will recognise a Submariner, but not be able to relate it to any specific event or place in history, it's just the archetypal dive watch.
The Speedmaster is there on Armstrong's arm in the moon landing shots and it's a Speedmaster that times the booster in the movie Apollo 13 (and of course, it was a Speedmaster that did the actual timing), so it's got a place in history that the Sub simply lacks.
In terms of design, I'd add the Monaco and the Navitimer (the latter another watch with a place in history, but not one that as many are aware of).

I would think Omega Speedy Pro personally.
Cheers,
Neil.
Tough choice, as I’d say there is probable 5 iconic watches
Rolex Sub
Rolex DJ
Omega Speedmaster
Cartier Tank
Apple iWatch
Personally for me the Sub.
But can see the average guy on street choosing DJ.
Probably a generation & maybe those in the US saying Speedy.
Those involved in fashion & ladies the tank.
The younger generation probably the iWatch (which is a scary thought).

It’s this by some distance for me
Ask any member of Joe Public to name what that watch is from a picture of a submariner a large proportion will be able to identify it as such, they’d probably call a seadweller a sub too if you showed them a picture of a seadweller instead.
I’m not sure as many would say “yep that’s an Omega Speedmaster”
I'm not convinced - Perhaps today's 'influencer' driven audiences will know the 'Rolex Sub', but I suspect few would recognise one Rolex from another (although I have no doubt Rolex are the most recognised brand).
I'm totally convinced, however, that few outside the watch forums could identify a Seadweller from a Submariner.
I'm not sure I could!

You lot have really surprised me and I thought there was one gimme when I started this thread..
I'm thinking Pan Am, Magnum, Mel Gibson, Che Guevara....come on, surly ........
Pitch
It starts and ends with the (pre-ceramic) Sub. Nothing else is in contention.
The F-91W has to be up there. Who hasn't owned one at some stage or other? The most sold watch on the planet apparently.
Apple Watch (iWatch isn't a thing) will no doubt be a tech icon of the future. I'd give it to the Sub for mechanical watches, but overall I think it's the F-91W.
Even Zeus wears a derivative of the F-91W, admittedly he had to have a more blinged out version.
On seeing the thread title I immediately thought of the Casio F-91 and am pleased to see others proposing this humble icon.

In the mainstream it's the moonwatch and submariner and nothing else. The last 60 years or so they have saturated into the culture of the Western world.
In the watch world it's the f91w, zenith covergirl and a386, JLC Reverso, AP RO, breitling emergency, Omega ploprof, Cartier tank, explorer 1.
Submariner. It's not even close.
Personally I’d say the Submariner.
Iconic
The Speedie Pro must be up there. But I do wonder now of the 20 something generation how many would know the moon landing connection? Unless they was into watches?
For those of the 80s or 90s growing up the Datejust must be up there?
Just my personal thoughts and ramblings.

I think that the clamour for MoonSwatch models answers the question about the younger generation. If they didn't know, they do now.

To a WIS, I’d agree with the sub or a speedy - close call….
To Joe Bloggs …… datejust 100%
Came here to say this. Annoying as it is to us WIS types, nothing sells like the Apple Watch any more. It's ubiquitous on the street, more so than any watch I can think of in my lifetime that's for sure. Like it or not (I don't) it's an icon and outsold Rolex (all models, not just the Sub), in what was a year of declining sales in 2023, by at least 38 to 1.
Even if Rolex made 38 million subs a year and the price echoed that of the Apple Watch I still think the Apple Watch sells more.
Sub , Monaco, Speedy, Date Adjust. Not necessarily in that order but those 4 are top of the tree.

The Bond Seamasters for most people in 2024
I think the Submariner while very known and famous is viewed as the snobs watch by the general public to be honest
The 2023 US and UK watch brand recognition survey indicates that Rolex is by far and away the most recognisable "watch" brand (interesting that Apple and Samsung are right there - has anyone mentioned the Apple Watch yet?).
It is hard to think that an Omega might produce the most iconic watch when 18-40% less of the population are even aware of the brand compared to Rolex.
Interestingly large difference there, perhaps Bond, being British, is the reason?
So if we discard smart watches (discuss?) the only question remains which Rolex? As I said above, the Sub wins it for me, but The DJ, DD, GMT all get a shout.
