Thread: Bedroom wardrobes

    Bedroom wardrobes

I would like to get something nicer than Ikea or Dunelm.

I was thinking Heals (although a bit pricey) or Oakworld.

Would anyone have any mid priced solutions at all please

    thanks

I need two doubles and would prefer something very tall - almost floor to ceiling

    thanks

We live in a Victorian cottage so wanted to maximise space.

Designed these with Fittingly and then fitted them myself.

    Very pleased with them.

I’ve spent a lot of money before on fully custom made wardrobes, likewise kitchens. I don’t think I’d do it again. YouTube and Tiktok seem to be chock full of people modifying and building in IKEA wardrobes, and from what I can see they look very good. A few people in the trade have told me that the IKEA carcasses are as good as anything this side of a custom job. On the other hand I’d be less inclined to spend a lot of money on a posher version of mass-produced sheet material carcasses; but as I have a refurb project to manage coming up next year I’ll follow this thread with interest.

A local joiner/carpenter would be a midway point between modifying Ikea furniture and getting a large manufacturer like Heals, Hammonds or Sharps.

I know of a couple in the York area that have small workshops and build some lovely looking bespoke wardrobes from green MDF, and spray painted to a professional finish.

Online, Facebook and Instagram would be a good start for finding good local trades.

Actually that reminds me that some years ago I had some kitchen cupboards made to order by Olive Branch Kitchens in Wetherby- they really were good value, and they delivered to London. Prices definitely much friendlier than London tradesmen.

Also following this as designing a new house. Plan is to build in the wardrobes but looking at door options and interior options.

There are a number of sliding door makers aside from Ikea etc but no idea whether those are better quality and some are very expensive.

Local carpenter also seems a good option to approach for home office furniture as well.

At our previous house we did the full Sharps thing with them designing and fitting wardrobes on two sides of the bedroom. It was an old (very) house and awkward shapes. Was it worth it? Yes, in that I didn't have to spend a few weeks building them. But it was 'kin expensive.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

When I had a house to fill I looked on eBay for Heal's, Conran and so on. A kingsize bed came from Heal's, was unused, cost low hundreds and involved collection. I rented a van, drove 50 miles each way and that bed is still in action almost 20 years later. I had a Heal's wardrobe that was £80, from memory, and involved collecting it again. Again in perfect condition. Sellers just end up wanting rid of these large pieces of furniture and can't deliver so it limits the number of people willing to buy and significantly lowers price.

There's a lot of man hours in the design, build and installation of fitted wardrobes, and if you add it all up the pricing starts to make some sense.

We recently had some large fitted wardrobes built, prices from the 'brands' like Sharps et al were coming in circa £16k to £20k ball park for an initial design, didn't want to spend too long on it just to get the ball park quote, so went off the shelf colour, minimal shelves, rails, cheapest doors etc.

    Local carpenters £7k
Fittingly was about £6k or £8k fitted.

We went with local Carpenter, did a great job. There are loads of them in any local area just use Facebook or Whats App local groups for recommendations.
