    The Panerai virus returns...

Oh dear... In May last year I posted a State Of The Collection, posing whether this was now my Exit position - a smart watch, a Seiko and a few G-Shocks.
    https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.p...y-exit-watches

Unfortunately, I seemed to have gone off the rails. The Panerai virus has flared up again, with the return of a PAM389 Submersible, a return of an Equation of Time (this time the tobacco dialed PAM656 instead of the blue dialled PAM670) and a California dialled PAM424. A trio representing Submersible, Luminor and Radiomir lines.

My advice to anyone trying to exit is to make sure you get rid of any straps you have - as one of the things that tipped me over the edge was the desire to use the collection of bespoke straps that I retained. I sold off all my Panerai OEM straps but made the mistake of not getting rid of all the aftermarket ones - probably a subconscious self-protection mechanism of the Panerai virus.

I've dumped the smart watch and now have little idea of my body battery, sleep score, heart rate, steps, calories burnt, floors climbed, and to ready message I have to pick up my phone - and am very happy to have dusted down my Paneristi creds.

Good to be back, for now... LOL

    Panerai Submersible PAM00389

Panerai Luminor Equation of Time PAM00656

    Panerai Radiomir PAM00424

    Welcome back!

Cracking threesome there which cover all bases I’d say.

I’m Pam-less at the moment but on the hunt for a base, have oem & custom straps sitting in the box looking for some action.

Beautiful trio, Alun, and probably an inevitable outcome. All bases covered, too.

As someone who one bought all the parts for and built a new mountain bike because he had a nice seat post that wasn't being used, I completely get that.
I love that submersible too - I've been tempted by the 389 a number of times and it would leave me with a 3 PAM line up of Radiomir, Luminor & Submersible as well.

just the fact those pics are monochrome makes those watches look great.

Always fancied a submersible and this isn't helping!

    Lovely trio.

I must admit I found it strange that you felt you needed all the extra complications of a smart watch when you retired and were clillaxing. I’d say the less of the Pams is definitely more with that vibe.

I do agree on you original thread that the dw5610 is all the watch you could ever need and a true desert island watch.

Great to see that you have recovered from temporay insanity. Superb collection.

    The Panerai virus returns...

    Welcome back!

I still remember your mad table shot from a while back. I understand having the Panerai Triumvirate, although I have a more basic Zero, 210 and 25.

You never know in what direction this madness will take you, but where you are is a fine place, so enjoy this part of your journey.

Stunning watches and equally stunning photography :)

Good to see you back! Great threesome, especially like the 656 as personally always preferred it to the 670.

I don't think the Panerai bug ever goes away it just lays dormant for awhile. Nice collection!

I was always on the fence - and for a while was seeking a 656 alongside the 670. The blue is great but the tobacco is equally great but in a different way.

These pics were when I was shopping around before picking up the 670.

I've yet to succumb to the Paneristi cult. Although I have been dangerously close a few times. And I never really liked the submersible. But that submersible looks great....
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I was all on track to buy yet another Ulysse Nardin (a marine torpilleur) when the wife said it look the same as the one you’re wearing (a maxi marine diver) to me it’s very different but I could immediately see what she meant and realised I was just blindly ticking a box. I’d be after an executive next which is my dual time in an integrated strap frock (still want one though).
So I gave myself a slap and after surfing the usual suspect websites talked myself into and out of a PAM321. Then it was sold and I was gutted. A few days later it miraculously reappeared on the WoS website so I jumped on it immediately. I was a little meh when it arrived and then 2 days later it stopped (explaining its reappearance). I’m stubborn so after a chat with a very lovely WoS rep it was returned for repair via a local goldsmiths.
Waiting another 3 months for it to be repaired and returned made me wonder if I’d made the right choice but I think I did as it’s an effort to not just put it on every day.
If I *HAD* to downsize, which may be on the cards given the current economic climate I have a feeling it and my dual time would be last on the chopping block much as I love my other watches I think they’d be the ones to stay.
If I come out the other side of the current uproar intact then a Radiomir is an almost certainty and a submersible a distinct possibility.
If you’ve ever kind of thought of one and have the wherewithal to buy one then I’d highly recommend it. Just do your research, know what you want and take your time. There are a lot of pitfalls out there with movement feature and finishing shenanigans which makes finding one of the good ones more fun in my opinion.

They now do 40mm and up luminors - maybe smaller so there’s no excuse now

Mate, what’s the make of strap on the 424?

It's from Bakeka Handmade. I think Alfio from Bakeka has stopped making straps though, easing into a quiet retirement.

Well, I did say it's a disease, and here's further proof...

I have let one of the previous three (the PAM424) go to a new owner and I'm sure there will be further shuffling to be done.

The 270 came along before I found the 233. I'm going to live with both of them for a while and possibly let one go. Right now I'm erring towards the 270 being the keeper - sacrilege given the following for the dot dial 233, but there's something to be said for an auto, esp one with a PR - it's nice to see the 'status'. Plus I had read somewhere that there was a suggestion that the 270 wears ever so slightly larger in diameter, which I think it does. Ironically, given it has a busier dial, I think it actually has a cleaner look - smaller numbers and less markings on the PR indicator.

Wow, you certainly move fast mate, a 270 and a 233, both very nice!

The 424 has indeed found a nice new home!

Let’s face it. Those smart watches just give you more shit to worry about. Now all you have to worry about is whether your watch is keeping good time or not

Same here, had a bit of a fascination with them since the mid-noughties when SAS Tough Nut Chris Ryan was on the BBC wearing what later I discovered was a PAM25.

Never quite had the balls to make that purchase however. In the earlier days, that was out of my control anyway as I couldn't afford any. I must contemplate owning one every year but sort of chicken out. A mate had a PAM50 for a bit but it didn't last, I've tried the 42mm Luminor and thought it was really nice but.....I think if I got one, I'd move it on which keeps me from going for it.

Do like these sort of threads though, they really help the indecision.

They are all beautiful watches. The 389 / 1389 along with the 372 are on my try list, just to see if I could get away with 47mm on my wrist. I should make time to attend a GTG. I have always loved the 233, Panerai made quite a statement with it, although my heart is still with the simpler models.

Do you mind me asking where you get these Panerai from please? I’m semi-actively looking for a dot dial and I’m wondering if there’s an untapped source that I’m not looking at?

Agreed Dave. I’ve had a couple in the past 7 years. A 510 which I moved on quite quickly and a 609 that I still have. Both have the 8 day in house movement.

Keep being drawn to a 47mm case and wondering if I could pull it off. I’ve also still got a hankering for a 1940’s Radiomir GMT. Really like the 945 but not at the current asking prices for used

I don't think a dot dial, 8 or 10 day Panerai can be beaten if you also love the look of a fantastic looking crystal. Lovely.

Hiya. It's simply a case of spending too much time online. All the usual dealers, forums and if you're confident the likes of Chrono24 and eBay too.

There's a dot here just now from a great dealer
