Superb batsman in his day, 55 is no age.

That is quite shocking news, and as you say no age at all.

    So sad. RIP GT.

There was a time when he was the only real quality player in the England team. A great loss.

Terrible. I’ve always been a Surrey supporter and was a massive fan.

    RIP

He was a very elegant player too - loved watching him back in the day.

A classy batsman who went toe to toe with some of history’s finest bowlers. His century in his debut test match against the Aussies was legendary, I remember bits of that knock to this day. RIP Thorpey

Real shame, he was a great for sure. I think he had been very unwell in the last 18 months.

Best memory for me was him being a major reason we won in SL when they were a powerhouse

Still remember his innings in Karachi 2000 in near darkness

Indeed, and even with the support of a loving family, he couldn’t get through it.

This is why it’s so uncompassionate when people use the phrases ‘have a strong word with yourself’ or ‘pull yourself together’.

Mental illnesses are very real and as in this case can be just as deadly as any other disease.

    ^^^^Totally this.
So many people have died because of stigma.
The Yanks are on board with having a therapist/consulting mental health teams. The sooner other countries lose the stigma and give mental health the attention it deserves the better.

The idea that English cricket is not aware of this issue and is not doing anything about it is out of date. I'll leave it there, as this isn't the BP, and this is a nice thread about Graham Thorpe.

Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe died after being struck by a train at a railway station in Surrey, the opening of an inquest into his death has heard.

Very sad but I also feel for the driver and people who might have been there.

Terrible. Saw about his depression on the news.

    Poor old Thorpey.
    Cheers,
    Neil.
