Surgeons: At the edge of life

The sixth series has just started on BBC2. I don’t think any other programme captures my attention quite like this one, and my admiration for the skill of these surgeons (and their supporting teams) is absolute. Well worth a watch

Watching it now, big respect for these guys.

Some heavy hammering going on there.

It’s amazing. I honestly don’t know how they do it - I’d be a quivering wreck

Not the easiest to watch, I’ve put a Repair Shop on now to calm down

I’m a regular watcher of this series,it’s quite comforting to know that if you have an illness they can fix most things.
    Amazing work.

Anyone watching tonight, they have just taken a guys right eye out and are now removing bone.

I was happily watching football until the wife wanted to put this on.

Incredible stuff, but a tough watch.

    Partner loves the program.

I’m currently looking the other way most of the time.

The 'eye patch' on the man who had his eye removed is crying out for a tattoo.

The leg surgery was unbelievable. Fascinating stuff

    Leg operation was marvellous…

Having had right Knee ACL in 2018, hip arthroscopy on my right hip last July to remove five boney spurs, consequence of breaking my femur 30 odd years ago, about to have left hip arthroscopy next month to remove another piece of bone this all holds an interest.

My wife was in one of the earlier programmes.

She's a neuropsychologist, and assists with awake craniotomies (i.e. brain surgery during which the patient is awake and conscious). Her role is to continually test things like the language and speech responses of the patient, and to inform the surgeon if they are being impacted by the surgery.

A friend of us is an oncologist. She has ‘button’: when you ask her questions about certain operations, she start telling and explaining. Without regard for where she is, without any restrictions. Even on a full terrace in front of a restaurant. Sometimes people stop eating and ask the waiter/waitress for another spot…

Guess what has become a ‘running gag’… even her daughters get her talking when they’re sitting down for a coffee or lunch.
