I’ve also been toying with the same idea as the OP.
The 911 (997.2) appeal to heart and head but I’m still drawn to a Macan as we have family and dog. Does anyone have any experience or ever put their dog in a 911? Is this madness to consider?
The 911 seems like it would hold value but may cost more to run and the Macan the other way round. Am I wrong in this thinking also?

Depends how good a driver the dog is tbh.

Is it just me that thinks cross shopping a 911 and a Mscan is very odd? They are very different cars with very different use cases.

    Head vs. heart.

Audi Q5 or Macan would be a better comparison.

Problem with Porsche is similar to Rolex. If you want a Submariner, no amount of Black Bays or Pelagos will do. You'll still want the Rolex.

If you want a 911, and get a Boxter, Cayman or even a Macan, every time you see a 911 you'll wish you were driving that instead.

Personally I think the current Carrera is one of the best looking cars on the road and the one to get, if you can.

    First Porsche

My first Porsche was previously owned by Pink Floyd's Nick Mason
    Blue 944 Cabriolet
Boot stank of petrol as somone had screwed a subwoofer through the boot floor into the fuel tank.
Those of us of a certain vintage will remember(pre using internet) Autotraders magazine for sports cars-Top Marques
Think it came out every 2 weeks and was like a porn mag for any petrol head.

Nice motor back in the day

Depends if you have extended warranty on Macan and pay extortionate rates for OPC service.

Generally though I would think you are right.

Use case being my Porsche fund is vanishing and I dont like my Model Y so perhaps I could combine and scratch half an itch

I don’t think I have the budget for an M or RS car and can’t stand the bucket seats either. Just want some luxury with a bit of grunt.

The Alpina BMWs are well reviewed. Might test drive in a few weeks, just planting seeds with the wife first as it would be her car going.

Whilst I find his delivery a little irritating, he has driven a lot of stuff.

Watching that now but a 67k for a 2021 with 19k miles on Autotrader for a B3, 95k for a new one. Can’t even see a B5. Definitely can’t afford these but they are definitely discrete for what they are which is nice.

The Macan Turbo on here a few weeks ago for 35K was a great buy.
    Think Robert bought it.

This is the model y boot after some basic supermarket shopping (ignore the weird muffs). Pathetic. Granted you have another boot in the bonnet but who can be bothered with that.

I miss the glc but that boot wouldn’t cut it these days. Doubt I can afford a decent GLE but would feel like a twat driving one. A nice estate has luxury without any ostentatiousness.

To be fair if you're going to pack messages like that your going to need a transit if you have a 2nd.
Those messages would have fitted in one shopping bag.

Forgot to bring the shopping bags to Costco and got caught out

Probably some halo/horn at play as I just don’t like the Model Y

My neighbour has a GLE 63s in black - it's a beautiful car (and less noisy on start up than the X5M that preceded it - that shook my whole house every time it fired up). Whilst it's clearly not a cheap car, I've never thought it ostentatious.

My wife has a 71 plate GLE and it’s a hateful thing, ride quality is shite, cheaply built and handles like crap, I hate it! Good job it’s getting replaced soon.

Yes I brought it and really enjoying it so far - coming from an M4 competition that wants to kill you any time you touch the throttle the macan PP - offers premium luxury, much better view of the road, more grunt and all while floating along comfortably - I got inb the M4 at the weekend and hated it

had a few Porsches over the years. Currently have a 996 Turbo, but full hairdresser version; auto & convertible!

these are pretty good value and well sorted if they've been looked after; just get a good indy as others have said and it's not a bad experience at all. They are very analogue by todays standards but kick from the turbos is great fun and you have 4 wheel drive to stop it trying to kill you at every turn.

When i bought it 10 years ago it was still under warranty and I had the use of a few Boxsters and Caymans during services and have to say they are great fun and not as bloated as the 911 has become. There is always possibly that feeling that you need to tick the 911 box to have truly done Porsche but given the proportions of that later models I think the smaller cars are nearer to what a sports car driver would want.

Also had Cayenne's for 16 years and being 6'5" with a big dog, absolutely loved the ugly big lump.

If you want a Porsche then as we all know it’s best to get a Porsche. I would just save up and get the one you want and buy the hands that keep pillaging the funds to deter them 🤪

I've never been that interested in Cayenne or Macan, they are sporty SUV's, but not sports cars. I find sporty SUV's kind of a moot point and I've gone for BMW SUV's, which also drive fine, have luxuries and are a bit cheaper. However, 718 and 911 are a different thing, they are real sport cars and there are not many cars that can match them.

One I would recommend to anyone is to do the Porsche experience at Silverstone, i've just been and done 90 mins in a Carrera T. Wow what an experience!

Go and do that and you'll have a full brain worm for a 911.

I had a C8 RS6 as a courtesy car back in 2021 whilst my F10 M5 was in for an insurance repair.

It was a phenomenal vehicle in every sense. The traction was absolutely incredible. The load space was great and it just seemed so well put together.

I have always lusted after the C6 version though, with the twin-turbocharged Gallardo V10. One day, maybe. I was very close to buying a 996 turbo a couple of years ago, but I preferred the noise of a V8 or V10. I think a 911 is an itch I want to scratch but not quite there yet.

After months of watching asking prices on Autotrader and Pistonheads, I’ve finally bitten the bullet and bought my first Porsche.

Congratulations. Amazing colour. What model and spec did you go for and was it the colour that won you over?

I was a little hesitant about the colour.
The advert photos look much redder, but much nicer in real life.
It’s a 991.1C2s with extended leather and sports exhaust

Nice choice, and the wheels match it well. There are some shocking combinations out there.

Today I was out in my Polar Silver 993 Carrera 2
I bought her about 12 years ago and I still love every minute behind the wheel.
I’ve had lots of cars come and go but she is a keeper.
This pic was en route to The Holy Island….

Enjoyed picking my daughters up in the 996 C4S cab today but have to admit some serious regret about selling the 993...

that reminds me of the launch colour for the 993 or 993 turbo; which I think was called Arena red; very pretty.

Really like that spec, congrat! Makes a bloody change from the sea of black/blue/grey/silver.

    How are you finding it?

Yes, most Porsches seem to be ordered in those colours, I’ve been specifically looking for something a little different.

I don’t have it yet, had a 20ish minute test drive in it yesterday and after reviewing service documents, put down the deposit. I’ll be picking it up in about 5/6 weeks as I currently don’t have access to my garage.

First impressions, a firm ride even on comfort setting and a very close gate on the manual box, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. After a nearly three hour drive in my Mazda CX30, it felt much more solidly engineered and planted on the road. If I’m honest, the test drive passed me by a little bit, I was mainly focussed on not wrapping it up on a damp country lane in the Hertfordshire countryside. Mission accomplished.

I hope it's not a thread hijack to ask: how many of you owners keep yours outside rather than garaged? I really fancy a Cayman when the piggy bank is full, but garaging it is not an option.

    Mine always lie outside.
    No garage.
The problem is if you don't use it in the winter and it's not inside on a trickle charger then a flat battery is likely which is a right pita.

Don't tell me; you have to take the drivers seat and several panels out to access the battery?

No, that would be too easy! The battery is in the frunk and the lock is electronic. To open the frunk you need to remove the left front wheel and find a wire to pull in behind the fender plastics.

There is also a possibility of giving the car power through the fusebox, but neither of these options are very much fun. ;)

A guy I know has a solar trickle charger and leaves the panel in the windscreen. It’s an old Jag and seems to work for him.

Some nice cars on this thread!

I bought my 2009 987.2 Boxster 2.9 PDK around 18 months ago and love it.
Despite having all the right stamps in the service history, I don't have any other paperwork of what was done.
Some of the 'spark plug' and 'drive belt' boxes were ticked, but who knows...
So, as we're also planning a trip to France in it at the end of May I spoke to a local indy Porsche specialist (MLR, Fenton) and he basically recommended we did 'everything' as a reset, then back to the service requirements.
You might think 'well he would say that' but they're highly recommended by the local Porsche community an I intend planning keeping it for a few years so took the plunge!

Engine oil and filter, air filter, pollen filter, spark plugs, brake fluid, drive belt, PDK transmission oil (expensive oil!) and also gear set oil = £1,500.

They also had a good look underneath and all is good, no oil leaks, brake pipes not corroded etc.
And the 'exhaust rattle' I asked them to look at was actually the drive pulley about to drop off as the bolt had worked loose! Eeek!

Day after that, I took it to CRS Performance in Cannock for a full 4 wheel alignment and suspension check as I felt it was a bit nervous in the straight position when 'pushing on'.
Apparently there was a very aggressive positive camber on the front of which they dialled a lot out whilst keeping in spec, and one of the rear wheels was misaligned which they sorted = £125
Money well spent, big difference on the way home!

Rear tyres (Bridgestone Potenza) are over 5 years old, fairly low on tread and one has a slow puncture seeming to come from a previous repair.
Fronts are P Zero and seem almost new, so booked in on next Saturday for 2 new P Zero's on the rear = £512.

The rear light are misty, one has a broken seal and I've tried polishing them which does improve them, but they really need replacing.
Checking with local OPC = £500. Each. Nope... Looking for 2nd hand or aftermarket, but still around £500 a pair for new. Might leave that a bit.

So yes, I have spent over £2k on it this month but that should definitely keep me going for a few years and also massive piece of mind.

Now to get out and drive it!

I love that colour of red…very classy.

On the topic of garaging, my Boxster is kept outside all year but if I know I will not be using it for a few days then I put a cover over it!

    That’s lovely - 718 or 981?
