A volcano eruption larger than than London...

Interesting reading material about the biggest volcano eruption in 'modern' history. Ejected material was found over 4500 sq. kilometers. In comparison: Mount Krakatoa's explosion in the late 19th century was 'a mere couple dozen square kms' and the 'boom' was heard all around the world.

Even something as ‘small’ as Vesuvius could cause major issues for southern Europe.
If the conditions are right and Naples is in the way of the pyroclastoc flows it could result in hundreds of thousands of the deaths possibly millions.

A few years ago I trekked up Mount Tambora in Indonesia. The story of its eruption in 1815 is really fascinating and it resulted in “the year without a summer” in 1816

My father used to work for the water company in Medan, North Sumatra. He went up to Lake Toba (I guess that the area got the water from that lake) many times. Over the years, he never stopped to tell us how impressed he was by the size of the lake that was formed after a super-eruption. According to Wikipedia, the lake is 100km long, 30kms wide and 500m deep...

Do you remember the footage when the meteor fell to earth in Russia in 2012, 13? The effects of the shockwave were noticed miles and miles from the impact. And think of the explosion in Beirut a few years back. And the effects of that blast in a populated area!
