Home insurance to cover 50k watches and bags

    Hi folks,

I know that this has been discussed but insurance products change often so... has anybody RECENTLY found a good reliable insurer that will insure 50k of watches and bags withing the home insurance? These items do not go over 5k each.

I am with Admiral but the do not cover bags more than 1k, etc..

    Appreciate your help here.

I'd suggest giving Hiscox a call. They're good with high value items. Items under £15k don't have to be specified.

You could try LV Home Plus. I don't have personal experience of claiming with them but they have good ratings. They should be able to cover what you need.

Have a look at M&S bank.

NFU Mutual worth a try. Certainly OK regarding watches.

M&S premier cover, covers any individual item up to £15k as long as the total of those items doesn’t exceed £50k

As above and you don't have to specify the items, so it gives some flexibility if you move things in and out of your collection........ Of course it all depends on individual circumstances if £15k max per item and an overall valuables limit of £50k is right. I just renewed and the premium increased by 30% on last year but when I checked there was no comparable policy for less.

M&S is the most flexible out there if you stick to the limits. It is also cheap.

Literally just done mine, all done through A-Plan now called Howdens- 5k individual item cover away from the home, unspecified so no listing individual items.

I left them last year. Iiirc, if you don't have your watches in an officially approved insurance safe, they aren't covering them.

Is this a new clause? Reviewed my policy documents in light of your comments for a policy started last summer and no mention of a safe I can see… Would be a shame as I have insured with them for several years.

This is back last June. I was pouring through the details on a new quote and I realised that I hadn't been insured for the previous year. Have a right good look. This was on my laptop screen. I can't mind if it was linked to the total watch value but it was enough for me to realise I wouldn't be covered.

If you've put all the info in accurately and nothing is showing, then you should be gold.

Another point could be that I wasn't covering for watches outside the house. If you have such cover, I could see the safe issue being irrelevant.

That might be it then as I included cover for items away from the home which could alter the requirements.

I can’t find a safe requirement from a quick look. Where was it mentioned stefmcd?

That makes me feel better about my renewal with m&s, only went up 20%!

Another vote for m&s, agreed not having to specify items is a big plus.

It came up as a clause when I was renewing and put all my watch details in. I originally went with them 3 years ago because they had more generous limits on total value.

I can't mind if it was on the comparison site or m and s site. Can't even mind if m and s are on a comparison site! So many renewals to deal with nowadays.

Not sure if this clause was a value thing, a cover thing or an area thing. It was enough to make me look elsewhere.

I ended up with intelligent insurance.

I don't think M&S are on comparison websites. It's just their own site.

M&S contents insurance (and probably all their home insurance policies) are underwritten by Aviva.

I went on the Aviva website to compare their offer with M&S and they couldn't match it!

You have to commend the negotiations M&S have made to get this cover from their underwriter, Aviva. It's impressive to say the least.

My renewal went up by about 50% last year with M and S. Ended up getting same cover elsewhere for similar price they'd been the year before.

I was with M&S premier but premium went up 50%. I managed to get like for like cover with Aviva (who underwrite M&S) for half the price of my M&S renewal. Thats to insure watches out of the house as well. Of course I have never have to claim on my home insurance which is the real test.

That's the way to go. We should all shop about (just as you have done) for all our insurance needs.

You have quoted me but I wasn't actually commenting about renewals or increased premiums.

I tried but failed to get an identical quote I got from M&S on the Aviva website (knowing that M&S are underwritten by Aviva) just a few days ago. My quote was for contents insurance only and it was the Premier policy I opted for. I've tried again this evening but again I have failed to get like for like cover from Aviva. This was an initial quote rather than a renewal quote.

Again, shopping about when renewal prices rise by 50% is a must. You have done the right thing.

I found the M+S contents cover to be expensive but unbeatable - but the buildings cover was expensive so I just took contents cover from them and took buildings elsewhere.

Thanks all, I went for M&S content. Slightly more expensive but as you all (or most) vouched for, very easy and straightforward.

Those of you who have safety deposit boxes, do you take separate insurance to cover the items held there?

No separate insurance but since the Metro bank opening hour change I’ve moved my stuff to a different branch.

Just to note that I have managed to ‘negotiate’ on details of cover with insurers a couple of times. Nothing major but a couple of practical points that suited me better. So might be worth asking them to flex a bit where needed.
