Very sad - another of my heros gone. And so soon after JPR.

Surprising to learn that King Barry played only 25 games for Wales. Shows how the game changed once professionalism arrived. BJ's reputation and the reverence in which he was rightly held had me thinking in the three figures, even though as Max Boyce put it, "I was there!".

Barry retired early, I believe media pressure was one of the key reasons behind his decision. Even fifty odd caps were a pretty high tally then, I think JPR had 55, Gareth Edwards somewhere in the 40's?
Of course it was just the 5 Nations before Italy joined, no world cup, and of course the players all had day jobs so for most there was only so much time available for rugby even though it was the centre of their lives. Far less games played a year than now.

Considering the 4 (home nations) became 5 in 1910, it’s reasonably safe to say that Barry’s career was not too concerned with the 4 nations.
However it is true that they were amateurs and their rugby career was short before they moved on to their professional career.

I'm neither a rugby fan nor Welsh, but back in the day what joy BJ, and his contemporaries, bought to a sports enthusiast in his teens. Thank you.
