    5 albums you would recommend

As some of you may remember I (reasonably) recently started a thread to create a TZ recommended playlist. There was a good response and the end result was very interesting with some great song recommendations.
    Link here to that thread.

Leading on from that I wondered if we could do an album recommendation thread and get a similarly good response.

    Here are the criteria:

Recommend 5 albums based on the following-
    (1) An album you have been listening to regularly for years.
    (2) An album you used to listen to but haven’t done so for years!
    (3) An album by somebody you ‘forgot’ about but have recently rediscovered.
    (4) An album by somebody relatively new (to you)…if it’s a fairly new band/person then they might only have released an EP!
    (5) “Poster’s Choice”…..an album you fancy suggesting. Could be anything…..maybe an old standard or perhaps something you only discovered yesterday.

There you go…..I’m looking forward to seeing what’s posted.

I suppose I should start off!

    (1) A difficult choice as there a a few but the one I have probably listened to the most over the years is “101 Damnations” by Carter USM.

    (2) I’ve cast my mind back lots of years to when I was wandering round as a kid with my Walkman and a few cassettes. The album I recall playing a lot back then was “The Crossing” by Big Country.

    (3) I was watching Jools Holland not long ago and he featured a bloke called Wreckless Eric. I used to listen to his music years ago and had completely forgotten about him. I have been playing his back catalogue lately and would stick up his eponymous first album as a good listen…”Wreckless Eric” by Wreckless Eric.

    (4) Have you watched the tv series ‘Reacher’ on Amazon (based on the books by Lee Child)? I would recommend watching. They also have a good soundtrack and whilst watching one episode a track by a particular band caught my ear and I have been listening to their stuff recently. Try “Twelve Spells” by The Stone Foxes.

    (5) Again, quite a few to consider and many I could mention but I’m going to go punk! This is an album by an Australian punk band called Amyl and The Sniffers….actually not an album per se but their first double EP called “Big Attraction & Giddy Up”

Hmm, an interesting head scratcher to come up with a list.

    1) Tool - Lateralus (I probably listen to all of their albums equally, but over the years Lateralus has probably got the most spins)

    2) Helmet - Betty (huge for me in the 90's)

    3) Skinny Puppy - The Process (Technically it could be any of their albums, but I've been listening to The Process a lot lately having not listened to them at all in 25 years)

    4) King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation (bewildering discography, but this one is my favourite pick by far)

    5) All Them Witches - Nothing As The Ideal (incredible road trip album, preferably through an American desert)

1: Hopes and Fears by Keane, about to go back on tour to celebrate 20 years since release.
2: Urban Hymns, haven't listened to the full album for years and just listen to the odd song.
3: The man Who by Travis…..heard Turn on the radio the other day and downloaded the album on Spotify…have the vinyl somewhere
4: Might have to get back to you on that one….
    5: By the way…the Chillies.

    (1) An album you have been listening to regularly for years.
    Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
    I don't care that it's a safe choice, it's just magic.

    (2) An album you used to listen to but haven’t done so for years!
    Billy Joel - The Stranger
At his best. I need to hunt out a good pressing to add to my collection.

    (3) An album by somebody you ‘forgot’ about but have recently rediscovered.
    Nirvana - Nevermind
Nostalgia is so powerful - it's not really to my taste any more, but it evokes so many memories.

    (4) An album by somebody relatively new (to you)…if it’s a fairly new band/person then they might only have released an EP!
    Peter Gabriel - I/O
I was more in to Phil Collins or Mike and the Mechanics when it came to Genesis Alumni, but Peter Gabriel's 'So' was sublime, and buying his new album 'I/O' on a whim was an inspired choice. It's outstanding.

    (5) “Poster’s Choice”…..an album you fancy suggesting. Could be anything…..maybe an old standard or perhaps something you only discovered yesterday.
Dire Straits - Erm... any of their studio albums
Of course, it should be Brothers in Arms, but I get just as much joy out of any of the six available, I couldn't really choose.

    (1) An album you have been listening to regularly for years.

Slint : Spiderland - a strange experience for a work of genius later cited as influential by so-many acts but which was actually ignored by nearly everyone for two decades! An entire book has since been written about it! Pure fluke that I stumbled upon it. It's a very odd recording - needs playing much louder than anything else you own, and you'll need a pretty resolving audio system to make much sense of the muttered vocals, but brace for occasional passages that'll cause you to sh*t yourself - in a good way... Worth it - Good Morning, Captain is one of the most emotionally-stirring things I've ever listened to: the little hairs still rise, even now...

    (2) An album you used to listen to but haven’t done so for years!

The Stranglers : Rattus norvegicus - wore this smooth as a semi-feral yoof, but punk was never about nostalgia so I can't bear to listen to anything from this era now. The sight of decrepit old c***s like me dressed-up as boutique-punks gives me crippling cramp in my cringe muscles... Doesn't help that half the band are dead now.

    (3) An album by somebody you ‘forgot’ about but have recently rediscovered.

Half Japanese : Hello - played Jad Fair's stuff to death in the early 2000s, then nothing until the last few months - been rather nice catching-up with his subsequent efforts, which are certainly consistent: love and apocalyptic-threats continue to dominate thematically!

    (4) An album by somebody relatively new (to you)…

Hak Baker : Worlds End FM - a likeable mashup of austerity rap (~Sleaford Mods), with an Urban take on Nowave: only streamed this at low-res so far, so looking forward to the CD arriving next week.

    (5) “Poster’s Choice”…..an album you fancy suggesting.

Love : Forever Changes - did any other musician do more to sabotage their own success than Arthur Lee? And has there ever been a more challenging year than 1967 in which to launch an album? Pretty much a cult following until Arthur started touring the album again with a new young lineup in the early 2000s. How did fate respond? By killing him with cancer in 2006 at the age of just 61...
Wonderful album - music might not be for you if you can't find something to like herein...

    1. Les illuminations - Britten…. The voice of Sir Peter Pears is totally transcendent

    2. Beatles - Rubber Soul - must’ve played that tape to death when I was 17…. It’s still great of course, but I rarely revisit it

    4. En attendant Anna - principia - great voice and fun to listen to

    5. Paul Desmond - From the hot afternoon- better than Stan Getz? Yeah, probably !

Please may I encourage those who enjoyed it back in the day to get Vow Wow's 1985 album Cyclone into position for being an answer to No.3: "An album by somebody you ‘forgot’ about but have recently rediscovered" — it really has stood up to the test of time, you won't regret returning to it, I promise.

    (1) An album you have been listening to regularly for years.

Moody Blues - Question of Balance. The Moodies at their very best.

    (2) An album you used to listen to but haven’t done so for years! -

Jon and Vangelis - The Friends of Mr. Cairo. Been a Yes fan for years, bought this when it first came out.

    (3) An album by somebody you ‘forgot’ about but have recently rediscovered.

Maddy Prior - Woman in the Wings. Loved Steeleye Span back in the day, went to see them at a live concert a few weeks ago, she still sings beautifully.

    (4) An album by somebody relatively new (to you)

Phineas Newborn - Fabulous Phineas. I've loved Jazz since I was a young boy, especially piano jazz but only recently discovered this guy.

    (5) “Poster’s Choice”…..an album you fancy suggesting. Could be anything

Anything by Deep Purple, but especially Concerto for Group and Orchestra. Jon Lord was an exceptional musician and this is a class piece of his work.
    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

Excellent work so far!…. This is throwing up lots of albums I aim to listen to and also plenty of old favourites that I really should make the effort to listen to again.

You have my utmost envy, I missed two opportunities to see him on tour for what now look absurdly spurious reasons thru the lens of hindsight!

You probably know this, but there's an excellent live CD from the 2003 tour.

I’d love to be able say something reassuring like “he wasn’t that great”, but we both know I’d be lying!

I never knew there was a CD of live tour…. His voice sounded great…. It’s actually on Apple Music, so will give it a whirl

This is an album by an Australian punk band called Amyl and The Sniffers….actually not an album per se but their first double EP called “Big Attraction & Giddy Up”
    1) Can’t Buy a Thrill by Steely Dan, heard it at school off a mate and loved every track

    2) Aladdin Sane by David Bowie, my older sister had this and we both loved it.

    3) Car Wheels on a Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams. I used to play this all the time, then I saw she was touring uk and went to see her. I didn’t realise she’d had a stroke, could hardly see and needed assistance onto the stage but she was amazing.

    4) Careful of your Keepers by This is the Kit, hypnotic folky/mandolin and a beautiful voice

    5) Live in Paris by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, if only for the versions of Spread your Love and Whatever Happened To.

I’m slowly working though some of these that are new to me, interspersed with some of them I know but haven’t listened to in a while.
It’s proving as enjoyable as working through the TZ playlist!

This might’ve become lost in the melee but if anyone hasn’t contributed then can I encourage you to do so. Cheers

Great thread! I've already gone to find some Carter USM...

    (1) An album you have been listening to regularly for years.

    The Prodigy- Experience

This has been a go to and staple for me since it came out in 1991. Always love the Prodigy, still do. This, I think, is their finest work.

    (2) An album you used to listen to but haven’t done so for years!

    The The- Infected

I went through a big The The phase in the 80s/ 90s, but lost interest a bit. The music is amazing, and Matt Johnson more poet than lyricist. Will have to rediscover, as going to see them in September!

    (3) An album by somebody you ‘forgot’ about but have recently rediscovered.

    U2- The Joshua Tree

Re-bought this last year, forgotten how good it is. Not sure about the rest of the band's output, but you never know.

    (4) An album by somebody relatively new (to you)…if it’s a fairly new band/person then they might only have released an EP!

    Warpaint- Warpaint

Amazing all-girl psychadelic/ stoner rock band from California. More recent albums showing superb musicality and growing maturity to their sound.

    (5) “Poster’s Choice”…..an album you fancy suggesting. Could be anything…..maybe an old standard or perhaps something you only discovered yesterday

Silver Bullet- Bring Down the Walls No Limit Squad Returns

Raw British rap, I really like all of the tracks. It was on repeat for a couple of weeks in the car, didn't change it!
