I am not going to abstain that would be a lie job my part. I have a few big miles stones to celebrate and so I will continue to buy 6 or so for myself and several for the wife.

I hardly wear a watch anymore since I'm essentialy a shut-in these days. Nevertheless, I keep seeing watches I lust for, so all bets are off!

    Game on!

I'm off to a bit of a shaky start already - traded a watch but had to add some cash - does that count as a purchase?

On the plus side, the Nomos I ordered last year arrived before Christmas.

I do have a weather eye out for a Halios Seaforth but hopefully my resolve will last!

I think we have 16 people signed up to this so far.

    Any more takers?

  7. #57
I’m a net loss entrant. I might buy but I’m pretty sure I’ll have fewer by 2025.

Signing up last year immediately preceded a purchase so I'm keeping schtum this year.

    I'm in.

I think I'm almost cured of OWP (Obsessive Watch Purchasing), all I need to do now is reduce my collection a bit.

I think I should sign up to this, I had an incoming in December so before the deadline!

There is nothing achievable I want to buy at the moment as well as the fact there is nothing in my collection I would really want to sell or trade and finally I am trying to buy a new home in 2024 so funds probably better used there!

Good luck to all who have signed up,
I really should too but know I'm destined to fail, I've started off the new year with a few strap additions for my collection, hopefully that's me sorted for now!
    Stay strong!

UPDATE: I've just committed to a rather expensive complete new bathroom and heating install so I hereby declare that the only watch I will purchase in 2024 will be if I get a call from the AD for a silver OP41.

Only exception to this is if I meet my other financial goals relating to cash ISA, pension contributions and income tax. If those are all achieved then I will start to put money into a watch fund.

Boring but sensible and potentially lucrative in the long run. Also encourages me to enjoy my existing collection.

Lapse doesn't have to mean relapse.

You still have 360 days left to not buy a watch :)

First you add the massive cheat that trading doesn't count (as if selling a watch and buying another with the money is any different) and then you fail in the first week 😂 Delighted for you and your watch-acquisition habits, but not sure you're a helpful contributor to this thread!

In my defence, it was a trade for a watch that I've long desired and that fits perfectly in my collection. As it was a trade, I haven't added another watch without moving one on.

Habits can be hard to break but I'm still intending not to buy another watch this year.

Relapse prevention isn't always a straightforward path:

The initial transgression of problem behaviour after a quit attempt is defined as a lapse which could eventually lead to continued transgressions to a level that is similar to before quitting and is defined as a relapse

Show a brother some support! :)

I’m focused on no watch purchases or trades this year, my last watch trade purchase was on my daughter’s 21st birthday at the end of December so really keen on making it my last watch plus I have two up for sale
Tbh the price of new watches is certainly putting me off the whole experience

Certainly is beginning to feel like most brands have inflated their prices beyond anything approaching reality - I know these were always premium or luxury products at prices most people would be unwilling to pay but situations JLCs going up 40% make you start to think that you’re just being taken for a mug.

Got the call for the OP41 so picking it up on Sunday. Definitely no more watches this year. Sorry not sorry.

I have semi-fallen off the wagon, I did sell a watch but as part of that took another as a very minor part-exchange. Plus the guy I bought it off was very generous and chucked in another as a freebie! So whilst I am net one watch up, I haven’t actually purchased any new ones, which I’m still counting as a win so far. Still need to sell my Sinn UX and possibly a CWC G10.

Failed on week 3 of January FFS. Numbers wise I have reduced them. As I traded in 3 for 1 and it was one particular Watch that I had been wanting for quite some time (Years) and one appeared locally, so I had to act.

Has anyone made it to the second month of the year without buying a watch?!

I bought one on 2nd January, although I'm telling myself that it didn't count because it was (mostly) a trade.

Ordered another watch today (Halios) but that one doesn't count either because it's going to be a gift.

I'm determined to get back on the wagon for the rest of the year.

    trades and no new incoming.

Did see that stunning PAM with plum dial 42mm and had an urge.. but not yet

I failed in the first week by buying a cheapie from SC, and then double-failed a week later buying the updated version of the same watch brand-new.

Made myself feel better by giving the first one away to a chap who'd had the same watch robbed in-transit after he ordered it off the back of seeing mine...

I'm still one-up on the year though, and that HAS to change...

    I am WEAK...

This little group doesn’t seem to be working well, haha.

Somehow I’m still holding on. Started looking at some watch straps, that doesn’t count against me right!?

    I am still going/abstaining.

It helps that there is nothing I really lust after at the moment.

And I added a long term grail (IWC Aquatimer 1000m) back in October.

San Martins, digital watches, other watches under £350, and any watches my wife doesn't find out about don't count, right?

My pleasure. We are alive in a time of linguistic horrors - witness: a watch writer using the word "platform" to denote the generic styling and movement common to a microbrand's fairly unremarkable range of watches. I wonder if said 'platform' has been 'leveraged' at some point in its career...?

    Shuddersome...!

Think this has got to be based on headcount - i.e. if you exchanged one for two, you now have more watches and therefore will not be going to heaven until you atone for this sin.

I didn't buy any watches in 2023 and I'm not sure I've bought anything since Covid. I've been idly thinking of selling one or two watches, or seeing if I can trade into something else, but I really don't know if I can be bothered, or if there's anything I really want that much. I'm wearing my Seiko SLA023, as I tend to do most of the time, and I did see if someone here wanted to trade one of the 62Mas reissues for my Hi-Beat Grand Seiko, but haven't taken it seriously enough to think about selling the GS and putting out a WTB. It's all so much effort.

Can I join the club or is it only for people actively abstaining, rather than people who simply can't be bothered?

I have found over the past couple of years I tend to wear one or two watches only. The rest are sat in a watch box doing nothing so am thinking of getting rid of most of them.

I am waiting on a Sub but I’m not looking for anything else this year. Naturally, if I succumb I will report it here also

    RIP cheap beater:

What I thought was a dead battery proved to be a dead movement.

5 years and £12 is not too bad I guess, and it does at least mean I'm evens again

I haven't bought a watch per se, but I have bought the parts to build one. Now these were bought from the proceeds of swapping a dial and hands for someone. So technically its not a watch and technically it hasn't cost me anything...

Still no changes since November for me… but, I am having fleeting thoughts around shuffling a couple that don’t get worn much.
Name is still on the list for a sub LV as well.
