    Christmas quiz

I host a weekly quiz at the Community and Sports Club in my village.

If anyone would like a copy of my Christmas quiz that I'll be doing this Thursday then please PM me your email address and I'll send them over (as PDF). They might be useful to you for work events, family get togethers etc.

The quiz round is a nice easy 40 questions.

The picture round has a Christmas answer for each photo (such as Noel Gallagher and Juan Pablo Angel).

    Cheers all and stay safe.

I am presenting the annual Weardale Road Pub Quiz League Christmas Extravaganza on Monday week; at least I was. Page 3 of the Pictograms section is being evaluated by the Vice Squad.

If anyone wants to take part, just rock up at the Three Rooms of Gloom, Weardale Road, at about 8-30pm. All proceeds are going to Guide Dogs for the Drunk.

If you want a quiz-on-a-plate, I suggest that you contact shish101; a generous offer.

If you want a quiz that's a bit left-field, unfortunately you will have to compile your own, as I store mine in the DTP software that I use for my editing job.

One example from one of my previous Christmas Extravaganzas:

Name the 5-times Oscar-winning feature film that told the story of a Canadian RAF pilot who after WWII gave up flying to become a gentleman's gentleman.

I am afraid that being French I wouldn’t be patient enough to take part.

Had this one sent to me, the question being: what do the numbers represent...?

    Anyone?

The year they were formed minus the current year 23.

How does this maths work, subtract 2023 or 23?

Sunderland, for example, formed in 1879 how do we get to minus 6?

    Not a clue.
Leeds were formed in 1919 so I just had a guess at -4.

That all sounds a lot more complicated than my quiz regulars enjoy!

Is that a full list or the top 21?

Many notable teams missing. Bit of an old school list.

That's the list that's been given. I assume the constituents are a clue to the answer.

Exactly. So must be something that only those teams have achieved is part or the solution.

    Some notable exceptions.

Plus the negative numbers imply the solution is a function of two numbers.

There was only a few years when there was 21 teams in the first division.

Maybe wins - losses for one of those years

21 teams in 87/88 but Leeds were in the 2nd division then.

It could possibly be the goal difference for cup competitions in the 77/78 season when forest won the European cup and the league cup.
Edit to say 79/80 or 80/81.

I think it's to do with the year forest won the double.

Forest have never won the double, if we’re talking traditional interpretation of the double i.e. league winners along with FA cup.

I think it might be nothing to do with their playing record and something like (obviously it's not) their names Scrabble score, or something like that

It's the hottest ever temperature recorded at their respective ground.
I've been to Elland Road in summer, -4 sounds about right.

They've won a double of sorts with the league cup and European cup.

Which is why I stated traditional double.

If we’re making up other doubles, we could be here a long time 😉

This has been driving me crazy. Please share the answer when known.
Initial thought was something Clough related with Forest and Derby at the top. It can’t be goal difference as it’s too positively skewed.
Only thought left is it’s an extract of the setters current Football Manager league table. Leeds, Newcastle and Sunderland have been deducted points for repeated claims exaggerating their history and support levels. This is the 2031-32 season, the Man City investigation is still ongoing.

Good effort, but there is no football ground below sea level according to google

Blundell Park is also the lowest football stadium in the United Kingdom, at a height of only 2 feet above sea-level.

I’m sure the 21 teams in the list is a clue to the solution.

The quiz is going down a treat. As is the beer. The quizmaster (me) has been treated to some free pints and is struggling to pronounce some of the longer words!

No. I think every team on that list has won the top level championship

West Ham and Fulham, just to name 2, aren't on the list, haven't

I wonder if thats something to do with it.

Percent of being champions when playing in the top flight? But doesn't account for negatives

BUT, frustratingly, it turns out that rather than just being a football question, it was a work/football question. I work in real estate…

xxnick1975 was getting as close as any of us were likely to get by spotting that all of the teams had won the top division.

The numbers actually represented the % return on the UK real estate market in the years that each team won the top division.

I spent ages looking at squad sizes, year each club was formed and even asked google Bard for an answer (it seems were a long way off AI solving anything like this!).

    Sorry!!

Blimey, I can’t imagine anyone got that right.

Also, a lot of the teams are multiple winners, so is it the last time they won?

If I asked that type of question at my quiz I'd be strung up from the club's rugby posts!
