Christmas Presents for the Wife thread 2023

So my wife is struggling to come up with ideas of what she wants for Xmas and everything I suggest is a no, Ikm sure many others are in the same situation?

Hence what are you getting your wife or more importantly what does she want?

Both Christmas and birthday pressies are easy for me. Until we retired she liked Elemis creams, when we retired she forbade me to get them due to the price and likes the equivalents from Origins.
I usually add a silver trinket or watch or similar as a surprise.

Hong Kong 7s tickets, when they go on sale next week. Hotel and flights already booked.

This is absolutely definitely her Christmas present and I derive no pleasure whatsoever from it.

Maybe the trick here is to buy two presents.

We have been married for 52 years and are both on the wrong side of seventy so the simple truth is that we don't really want anything and there will be millions like us.

Buy her an experience, a weekend away somewhere or a decent dinner or lunch at a Michelin restaurant is the way to go.

    Tyres.

Last April she got a pair of front ones for her birthday, the back are ready for changing to she can have a new pair for Christmas.........sorted!

Definitely not buying her another frying pan, bought her one a couple of years ago (wrapped it up nicely too) and she tried to hit me with it, some folks are downright ungrateful.

A new (ish) car - technically, financially, half a car - But still I must be mad.

Really looking forward to my pair of socks in return!

Christmas presents have been a bit devalued as we buy ourselves anything we fancy during the year.

That said I usually get her a bottle of her favourite perfume and I get a token gift as well.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

We don’t need any more “stuff”. Our friends think we are odd.

1st world problems for the entitled. Why not give something to a worthwhile charity instead. Like so many posts on the forum lately it seems to be a way of boasting about your wealth.

My wife bought herself one of the M&S advent calendar smelly kits . Something like £300 of products for £45. She has already fished out the things she doesn’t use and given these to our daughter, everyone wins :)

I was given a £9.99 pack of socks, as I said everyone wins!

You didn't bother to watch Willey's post earlier in the thread then.

LOL ... we go together ....

I guess the point is we spend our spare cash on holidays rather than buying gifts we probably don't need/want.

When people ask what I'm buying the wife for Christmas if I say nothing people think I'm some sort of scrooge ; so now I say I'm buying her a holiday ...

It's not either/or, it is possible to do both.

I'm sure many give substantial sums to charities on here but don't crow on about it.

Eddies TZ-UK fundraiser has raised some large amounts over time for good causes plus of course the recent Ukraine fundraisers.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

An electric faux fur throw... Got Mrs H one for her birthday a couple of weeks ago - haven't had the living room fire on since, and even turned the thermostat down a degree without her noticing.

Should pay for itself by the spring

I suspect most of us and our wives have had many presents before. So material things, unless significantly wealth depleting, don't hold much meaning.

This year I've gone for something thoughtful that reminds us of a meaningful experience. Yes, it's a photo in a photo frame

I read somewhere recently about the 5-3-1 system. You suggest 5 things, she selects 3 possibles, and you buy 1 of those.

I suggested a trip to the jewellers to buy her a diamond ring for our silver wedding anniversary last month. Budget £5k. I got a tongue lashing for ‘not knowing me’, & that I should know that she doesn’t care about jewellery. I should have known that she’d rather have a gym membership instead. I supposed I shouldn’t complain, that’s only £800.

I am a big fan of the experience gift, multiple positives, they get the present on the day, something to look forward to and the experience itself. Great suggestion.

Only downside is it costs you twice as much as you’ve got to pay for yourself too.

My wife’s a nightmare on two counts, one in a good way. She’s the least materialistic person I know and every year gets more difficult so I tend to mostly get her experiences, theatre tickets, afternoon teas or weekend always.

Unfortunately she’s also a hoarder who never throws anything away and I’m reluctant to buy her any more stuff until she starts decluttering.
