CWC Mellor or Hamilton Pilot Pioneer

    Hi folks,

has anybody had to make the choice?

Price wise - I've found the Hammie at a similar price to the CWC.

I did prefer the Hamilton, but now not so sure.

Very similar watches obviously but they are certainly different. I have both and the Mellor is most definitely closest to the original as in a tool watch type way. The Hamilton is slightly pimped up, it’s not trying to be a copy of the original and the finishing is a step up from the CWC. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, good luck.

Pics to help or hinder you!

I have the Mellor which is acrylic crystal, manual wind and pull out crown, so cant get it wet. I think Hamilton is screw down crown with manual wind and sapphire?

I do enjoy wearing my Mellor. The only negative is the acrylic does mark quite easily but easy to polish (so I’m told).

I don’t think you can go wrong with either but I am CWC fan.

After buying the Mellor, I picked up a Fatboy 80.

There was no choice involved for me, as it was the Mellor that I wanted. So, not really answering your question.

However, with regards to the above, absolutely. The Mellor's crystal does scratch, but add some Polywatch to your order and you'll be fine.

I second that about the dial on the Hammy, it would have been far better in flat black.

    CWC for me.

And just to say.....forget the Polywatch and price for a small tube.
Toothpaste does exactly the same for 99p maybe cheaper with all the budget shops.Remember toothpaste is a mild abrasive too.....and its in all our bathrooms right now.

Hamilton for me. I just think the dial layout looks better balanced and I do like a ( or six) Hamilton.

Thanks for the response all - it took me a while to decide, but have just ordered a Mellor.

Excellent choice. The Hamilton is nice but I love my manual wind CWC. After service and regulation mine is also keeping time to (left face up overnight) +1 SPD. As good as the Explorer I had.

Maybe I’m just lazy, but manual wind plus screw down crown is a combo I’d rather avoid. Then there’s the wear on the threads, too.

Just to clarify, it isn’t screw down, and it’s mineral not sapphire.

Looks great - enjoy it. IMO it also suits a NATO strap with a bit of colour or indeed a perlon.

I have to admit, I’m becoming more and more tempted to add a Mellor to sit alongside my vintage issued W10. Lovely watches.

@QM, I noticed you have a non standard strap fitted to your Mellor. As the lugs are 18.5mm wide, did you fit an 18 or 19 mm strap?

Hi Klunk, I have only ever tried 18mm straps which look fine.

    A good choice!

I have 19mm Chevron straps from Crown & Buckle and they fit perfectly. I think the strap supplied by CWC is also 19mm.

18mm would have been the original size issued and it looks much better balanced with that size.

I had a look for you they seem to be still available.
