About ten years ago, he turned one of his former homes into a sober living shelter for people who had got sober transitioning back into their normal lives.

"When I die, I'd like Friends to be listed behind helping people"

Obviously that's not happening, but nonetheless:

"I've had a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me stop drinking?’ I will say, ‘Yes. I know how to do that'."

Strange thing - I was on the train to London yesterday when I overheard two women in the seats in front of me talking about Friends and one remarked how much she'd like to meet Matthew Perry. Weird coincidence. RIP Matthew. Way too young.

Terrible news. He had enormous problems with both alcohol and opioids, the latter causing his colon to rupture resulting in over a dozen surgeries and many months in hospital.

I was actually quite worried for him when I saw him at the Friends reunion not that long ago.A shadow of his former self.

I once watched all 22 episodes of the neither funny nor very dramatic comedy-drama Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, which was cancelled after just one series, purely for the pleasure of seeing MP in a proper role.

I loved Friends - incredible writing and the perfect ensemble cast.

This is very sad news this morning.
So clever my foot fell off.

My kids loved friends and introduced me to it after a couple of series, I just dident get it at first and then I watched all the past episodes over a short period, loved it, RIP Chandler.

RIP Matthew. Chandler was definitely the funniest and best character on Friends, even though I wasn't a fan of the series. Hopefully you are at peace with yourself now.

Besides Friends (which I didn't watch many episodes of), I'll always remember him for his part in the 1997 movie 'Fools Rush In'.

    R.I.P. Matthew.

What a terrible shame, most peoples favourite Friends character and very, very funny guy. Obviously years of hard living caught up, the book he brought out last year literally starts with "My name is Matthew, and I should be dead".

By the way, google tells me that friends ended in 2004? That's obviously a mistake... that is almost 20 years ago and Friends and South Park were my reason for staying home on a Friday night, am I that old??

Was it suicide? I heard something about a hot tub!

That bloody alcohol can be a terrible thing. Freaks me out sometimes how much I can't wait for a drink at the weekend.

    Rip.

Cardiac arrest. Believe he drowned as result. RIP. Talented and young and a lifelong battle with addiction. Sad

This is such a sad story. A genuinely funny man who definitely died too young.

That's correct. Ran from 1994 to 2004; ten seasons.

I wasn't really into Friends but knew that he'd recently done some good work around the addiction subject. I watched this interview with Tom Power and it's very interesting. He comes over really well, talking with insight, giving hope and inspiration and how celebrity doesn't matter - it's all about how he can help people with addiction is now important for him in life.
Although its a serious subject he has a humour and self depreciation which i admire given his situation. Well worth a watch - as is his Newsnight clash with Peter Hitchens.

Very sad news, I really enjoyed Friends in its day. I might even give it a re-visit, I’m sure I’ve seen it available on Netflix.

    RIP Matthew
