    No ciabatta or pannini?

For 3 weeks now Tesco, Sainsbury's and M&S have had no Panini or Ciabatta bread.

I thought I'd got them in today's Ocado delivery but I just received the receipt and "Sorry, the following items are missing"

Anyone else noticed this? There's obviously a shortage of one of the ingredients.

    Granary baps it is then.

What wrong with good old British bread? A good hard, dry, tasteless, thin, white Chorleywood loaf. Bread as nature intended…. Why eat that forrin muck?

There seems to be a shortage of Pita around here which is obviously the end of the world in our household.

In other news our local Japanese Bakery has closed and I am gutted! They made lovely bread seeded with walnuts or onion seeds

Pretty easy to make at home and much tastier (and cheaper).

Look for Vito Iacopelli's recipes on youtube.

His no knead Foccaccia recipe is amazing as well

We needed ciabatta last week. Waitrose, M&S, Tesco & Morrisons all had empty shelves.

Finally tracked some down in Aldi, but they are not overly good; too dense and a bit of a longer length with less width.

Clearly visiting that many shops is the act of desperation lol, but it is a BTCC tradition having bacon ciabattas when we arrive. Other bread goods don’t travel as well.

    Exactly

I've got mozzarella, rocket, tomato and olives lined up for our Sunday sarnies, and no other bread works. I wonder what it is? Usually the Daily Fail is all over this kind of thing.

I'll have to amend to Brie and cranberry baguettes instead. The mozz and olives will keep.

Buying any supermarket bread is an act of desperation!😀

Stick to making your own, or for Sourdough add a loaf to your weekly organic veg box..

I order the part-baked from ASDA and we find them both good.

The Aldi ones were a really tough eat tbh, so dense vs the UK supermarket ones.

Even worse, forgot to pack ketchup, so stopped on the way to buy some! The thought of a dry bacon ciabatta is awful - but found if you sauce it early, the bread seems to absorb it all.

Has to be streaky bacon cooked on the bbq too, as any indoor bacon is just lacking imho. Sometimes a few pieces of Brie or blue cheese in them, but was watching the calories!

Was so bloody cold there, neither of us ate as much as we usually do when watching the racing. Hoping Brands is a little warmer next weekend.

    Result!

Tesco had some in the 'specialist' bread section. This means they put it in a paper bag instead of plastic and charge 50p more for the same bread. But at least the Sunday sarnies are saved.

Oh so it's a thing then. Just been in Aldi. Wanted some pittas but none. Plenty of wholemeal ones but no white. Bloody disgrace.

It does make you wonder if all the supermarkets are just using the same supplier

Had the same here in Harrogate, although the local artisan bakers all have ciabattas available.

Has anyone noticed that the Ginsters vegan Bombay potato and spinach pasties have been out of stock in Waitrose and Ocado for weeks? The inhumanity!

    Many do just that.

Lady Sod works in food production - there are intermittent shortages of a great many goods for a variety of reasons (Brexit, I'm looking at you...), but the biggest reason is that supermarkets are trying to bully food producers into holding or even reducing their wholesale prices, even as production costs continue to rise.

Producers have had no choice but to start to play hardball - and this is very new in UK food production - and so some are simply refusing to supply supermarkets unless they are prepared to pay prices that make economic sense.

They do this, or they go bust (and some already have), so either way, you the consumer will have do without and deal with spiralling prices. All because supermarkets have been locked in a downward spiral of artificially low prices for years and refuse to wake-up and accept that it cannot continue.

Crusty white rolls. Bacon. Onion. Done.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Onion! On a bacon roll! That's just not right.

Onion has to be sliced and cooked in a saucepan until nicely browned.

The other option is with a fried egg and lashings of salt and pepper.

My wife popped into Iceland to get milk for the office & was very excited to have found ciabatta. It too her the entire day to read what was written on the packaging.

I will be having bacon panini Sat the touring cars then!

To be honest when she sent me the picture, I’d looked at the bread and not the words, didn’t spot it either.

Honestly just make it guys, it is super easy, no pre-baked, wrapped ciabatta can be anywhere near as nice as a freshly baked one from your own dough. Much easier to get right than neapolitan pizza dough too.

It’s going to sit in a cooler with ice packs for half a day, can’t be bothered putting the effort in when it’s getting abused like that.

Besides, tmrw afternoon I need to bbq 4 packs of bacon, make dauphinois and cook a 2kg steak on the egg plus sides. Literally not got the time for any bread experimentation.
