Yes indeed. I remember thoroughly enjoying him in that series, Dennis Potter of course, and made more poignant for me as I have psoriatic arthritis, fortunately nowhere near as badly as the detective, or Potter.

He was genuinely frightening in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. And he was one of those actors when you read their filmography, you see a wide range of excellent performances.

Thanks for that, I had forgotten that Top Gear used to be quite tolerable, by and by. Michael Gambon was one of those actors whose listing in the cast of a film, show or whatever , meant, it was going to be well worth taking a look, thanks to the man for so much quality entertainment.

I was only rewatching that last night, and then woke up to this sad news. A superb actor, and a real loss.

RIP indeed. I was very luck to see him performing Krapp's Last Tape in 2010 (I'd missed Harold Pinter in the same role shortly before he died and have always regretted it) and always thoroughly enjoyed his wit when interviewed. Also pleased to see that there is as much coverage of his wider body of work and not just bloody Harry Potter.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

Indeed. I adored his tall stories, trying to untangle fact from fiction was an entertaining and usually futile endeavour.

Lovely chap. I worked with him once, years ago (child actor, RSC and BBC, Play for Today - remember them?)

He was delightful - friendly, supportive, funny.

I remember him fondly and will raise a glass to his memory this evening.

    Best wishes,
    Martyn.

What a shame. Great sense of humour and as already mentioned he was a mark of quality on any film

Layer cake. Rarely had a leathery tanned old aged gangster carried such threat.

I've never watched the Gambon Maigret series, must search it out. I was always packed off to bed when the Rupert Davies episodes aired

My cursory investigation doesn't produce any available streaming options so I'll probably have to find it on DVD from Ebay.

Like many fellow members, I always enjoyed watching Sir Michael.
His dry sense of humour and the way he said it was an honour to watch.
One of the all time great actors.
Sir, thank you for all the pleasure you bought to millions of us.
    RIP.

BBC R4's Last Word covered Gambon today. More of his big fibs/wind-ups revealed.
