That tea stop at Loch Ness is superb :)
I was searching for old Saab footage and stumbled upon this: a holiday trip from Sweden to the UK in a Saab 93. Movie from the mid-50s, early '60.

I wonder what a similar film shot today would show......not quite so Chumbley-Warner I suspect.
I want the newspaper kettle though..
Watched it again - there's just no lard arses are there. Rickets and Polio maybe, but nobody's shuffling about wearing XXXL tracksuits.
Do we still have drive on aeroplanes? If not why not dammit, where's my MP....
Was lovely for him to take his mum on that trip.
Looking at those slim people I would say that a full English breakfast is not the problem.
Interesting footage of Swedish left-handed traffic at the beginning.
I am a bit obsessed with the switch from left handed to right handed traffic on 3 September 1967, which was by far the largest logistical event in Swedish history.

Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.
Thanks I enjoyed that! My mum is Norwegian and was born in 1950 so I've sent this to her. And my dad is from Oxford, so that part will be of interest to him.

Brilliant. Impressed by the white wall tyres on the old "SLAB" and the aircraft channel transport.
I had to Google that - they flew out of lympne airport- not there anymore but the airport cafe is a regular bike stop for me

Thanks for that link Menno. I didn't spot any Rileys but an utterly charming nostalgic reminer of 1950s motoring.
I love the way they just park up and shoot footage of anywhere they wanted - Buckingham Palace? No problem, even though they were changing the guard. Piccadilly Circus? Sure, drop the camera operator off and drive round a few times.
I was 9 at that time. I think it was a Sunday. I remember that my parents told me a lot about it before and after the change. I was with my mother in the car and she told about the position /change of the steering wheel. From RH to LH when possible. I clearly remember that I sat in the back of her Austin. And then we talked about every traffic sign that needed to be changed or repositioned. (I admit, I have very strong & verifiable recollections from my younger years).
Really enjoyed that. The aeroplane ferry was interesting,I wonder what that cost back in the day.
Seems idyllic compared to today.

that could be a Tory promo for how britain could be wonderful if it wasnt for forriners/small boats etc. rees-mogg must have that film on a loop
really good post !!
I enjoyed that......................explains why my dad loved touring in the car so much !!!

I've seen old travelogues like that quite a few times on TPTV.
It may be nostalgia but everything did look better.
Far less traffic, no yellow lines in London that I could see and no one walking around glued to screens.
Cheers,
Neil.
no one could afford cars, technology was valves/transistors and international travel was limited to the rich/famous. Think you could only take £25 out of the country (unless you were rich/famous/Royal/politician). Food was limited in availabilty hence the thin people.
It's always fascinating to see these snapshots of a bygone time. I think it is the music that does my head in the most though.
It's a very comprehensive little film and I particularly liked the voice over at 13mins in, "Bravely we joined the traffic that whirls around Trafalgar Square".
Except there is hardly any traffic at all in those days... ;-)
So clever my foot fell off.
