    Opinion time ?? (Rolex content)

    Appreciate any input here.
    I already own a 2019 39mm Rolex Explorer.
Should I buy the new 40mm model ?

If it's to replace the 39, yes.

Seems to be the way people go on here. Just look at how many had the first 6 digit Sub but instantly needed the next model when it came out.

If you collect Explorers then fine, but otherwise why not buy something else, be creative and buy an Explorer 2.

Upgrade, or in addition?? Personally I can't see the point, I'm struggling to recall now but were the original case sizes 36mm and 39mm? I wouldn't be getting excited for a new case with an extra 1mm of steel. If you've got an itch to scratch with a Rolex 3 hander then the OP is such a ripe market right now, I would be spoiled for choice what colour to put my name down for!

    It’s definitely personal preference.

For me I’d add something completely different to the mix or combine both budgets to move up a price bracket.

    Happy hunting

Yes it would replace the39. Is the newer movement worth it ? Also, I bought the 39 second hand. This would have the papers in my name.

In these circumstances I’d make the change and you’ll get a longer warranty for reassurance

No name on papers these days, just a model, date of purchase, and serial number.

I would see if you can go to an AD to try it on while wearing your 39 and mull it over.

No! Give me one good reason why you think it's better. The latest movements have had problems, apart from the longer power reserve (which you don't need) the 'improvements' seem to have been exactly the opposite.

Sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into changing for changes sake. as for having your name on the papers, does that really matter?

I have a collection of 26 watches, only 2 are new to me, I don't see how it matters. watches are watches, not virgins!

    I’d say yes.

The new 40mm version just looks right.
It's just a matter of time...

For me a Rolex shouldn't be a transient thing that you upgrade every few years, like a car or a dishwasher. I suppose that's why I've had mine since 1986.

And actually although I haven't handled either of them I suspect the 39mm one is a bit nicer in any case.

    My vote would be no.

The 39mm dial is better than the 40mm dial IMO. Moving the Explorer text to the top irks me. Also the cut-outs in between the lugs means you're basically stuck using it with the bracelet (an excellent bracelet, but nice to have options).

I do like the larger crown on the 40mm though, so it gains a point there.

Rolex are the new Apple. When a new iPhone is released everyone has to upgrade even if they don’t need to.

Seriously guys, lift a tape measure or ruler out and look at 1mm

In my opinion, No : [1] the new movement has ongoing issues, why risk it; [2] ignoring movements, it's only 1mm, not worth it.

    Nope. Same thing. Move on.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I don't see the point in having both, but you could run them side by side for a while and choose your favourite before letting the lost go. You wouldn't lose on either if you sold.

39 to me looks more charming but the 40 will likely be better made and have a new warranty etc.

I have a 40mm ND Sub then got a 41mm and kept them both for over a year before selling the 41 on as I preferred the smaller case.

I would keep the 39mm and stay well clear of anything with the 32** movement in it if you plan to keep the watch long term.

It's the same watch, in essence.

    Go for something different.

In that case yes. You can probably trade without it costing you anything, you get a brand spanking new watch with a longer power reserve, and next service is a decade away.

I kind of find it a strange question because every watch I own has a deeply personal meaning and normally many years of history to it. They become like old friends. It’s like the 39 means nothing to you, and I guess that also means it might as well go but isn’t the 40 going to suffer the same fate?

I prefer the text layout on the 39.
I am on a list for the new 40, but having tried it on recently, I think I will be looking for a second hand 39. The movement issues cannot be ignored either.
    Good luck with your decision.

Were you ever tempted by the newer Explorer 2?

Completely depends on your point of view. We all probably spend much more time interacting with our phones or computers, yet we'll upgrade them in a heartbeat and not give them a second thought, after use. I think some people get overly sentimental or attached to products. Personally I don't, I still hold affection for some of the watches I've owned in the past, but I don't mind that either someone else now owns them, or they're at the bottom of a drawer unlikely to see the time of day again.

I'm intrigued by the cut between the lugs you describe. Can you post a photo of that?

The 39mm Explorer (with lumed numerals) is perfect (for me). Wouldn’t cross my mind to change.

    To The OP

I still have my "chubby" 39mm Explorer and see no reason to sell it.

I now wear a 1655 Explorer11 from 1980 and it looks far cooler than any of the modern stuff.

Now is a good time to buy Rolex, but bide your time, prices have still a way to fall before things pick up.

Not my photo, but this one shows it on the new 36mm.

According to this thread, lots of new Rolex models are using this notch between the lugs.

Thank you kindly. Definitely better to have a model without that cut if it means more bracelets and straps are compatible with it.
