To be fair, current international rugby is a completely different game to that of 2003 when England deservedly lifted the Webb Ellis cup.

You just have to look at the game going on now.

Its knockout rugby now, we can expect some of the pressure related to that to show itself at times, so England may well progress further.

Thats kind of the beauty of the game! 🙂

Its like the big boys come out after dark. Next weekends matches can only be a disappointment in comparison.

The one where Argentina won despite all the goings on.

Are you watching the game just now. Real rugby on show.

What a fantastic game. Strongly expect SA v NZ final. With respect, England and Argentina are a level below.
Makes a mockery of the seeding for this tournament imho.

Probably one of the best games I've ever seen. Well done South Africa. I really thought France would get something in the end but it was not to be. Rugby on a different level.

Boks are a decent enough side but I think England's forwards will be too much for them.

England the only undefeated side at the World Cup.

If an opposing player was waving at you after just going out of the World Cup in your last ever game youd have something to say to them too Id imagine. Sexton is one of the greatest to ever do it.

At least there is England against South Africa to look forward too 😁

Sexton annoys opposing fans but you would love him in your side.

I'd agree Ireland got the rub of the green against south Africa in the group stages but I wouldnt fancy is against them again, super side and the all blacks were fantastic against us. Rugby at its very best in the those two quarters .

He is always arguing and mouthing off. Terrific talent but very fitting that his final act was to be filmed mouthing off. Tournament worse off for Ireland being eliminated but thats the format.

We should skip the semis and go straight to a Boks vs All Blacks final. Eng vs Argies for third.

France probably the most talented team in the world but you cant argue with the result.

Ramos (a.k.a. Officer Crabtree) creases me up when he is taking a place kick. Talk about nonchalant (or whatever the French is for it). It is almost like he happened to wander past a rugby ball so thought he would take a quick swing at it.

Some great games this weekend and a shame to see France and Ireland go out. An improved performance by England but they seem a bit lacking when compared to The Boks.

However there is a part of me that suspects that we will somehow burgle the trophy. It would be a gross injustice to the teams that have gone out this weekend. I'm not expecting it but I wouldn't be surprised.

Hasn't been commented on much, but arguably cost them the game, with Kolbes charge down on their first conversion. 2 points would have done it.

Also thought the Pollard penalty could have been given the other way, but c'est la vie.

Once you are at the knock out stage anything could happen.
Form means little, its taking your chances.
That said it would be a total injustice

    A few comments:
Of course, disappointed by the results. Many comments that France was playing against 16 players (Kolbe's run at Ramos for conversion started before Ramos started his run, SA's last penalty should have been to France...) but what a nail biting game. Well done SA for going through.
On a side note, the process for drawing pools must be reviewed. On Saturday and Sunday evening, we've just watched what we all know should have been the semi-finals. We knew that long before the WC even started. Yes, there could have been an upset, but the pool phase is designed to avoid direct elimination; instead, neither of the 2 games in question can be called an upset, other than they happened a round too early.

Why? If England do lift the trophy, they will have beaten South Africa and probably New Zealand in their last two games.

Any team that does that deserve to be the champions IMHO.

  35. #385
My outside chance a couple of months before the tournament started was Argentina.
Unfortunately they were in Wales side of the draw, but they beat us fair and square so good on them.

The other 3 quarter finals were all corkers.

Best of luck to all the remaining teams, if Argentina win Ill be spewing I didnt throw a fiver on them at the start.

As much as it breaks my heart to say as a Welshman, come on England

Hopefully great semis and final ahead

You are correct but England's poor form over the last twelve months would suggest we shouldn't be here while the form of both France and Ireland over the same period would suggest the opposite.

However this is a tournament and past form is not necessarily a good indication of future performance. We've found a way to get this far, I hope that we can do the same next weekend.

The Pumas really dont turn up last night, it was a shame.
Tonights game will be interesting. Everyone is writing England off (especially anyone supporting the Boks). We will see, I think England will lose but dont think it will be as one sided as people are saying. If you are in the England squad and cant get your self motivated for this game you should really not be playing professional rugby. Key here is not to let the Boks bully The English pack up front. Take it too them, give their hard men a little tickle in the first couple of rucks they dont like it up em

Foolish people, never write England off, they have the personnel to beat anyone on the day, and tonight could well be it.
If I was a betting man I would bet on the Boks, but it would be a somewhat nervous bet.

Its in the little tickle phase that a red card could well pitch up, so something to be wary off for either side.

Without a doubt but the Boks are keen on a tickle as well.
