    Friday Watches - May 2023

After a weekend of wardrobe building I thought I had better polish this off and post it before another week passes. So let me take you back to May.

A late blackthorn winter made the country shiver, however the poor weather didn't deter people from joining the big camp out on The Mall. Coronation fever saw keyboards arranged along 17th century battle lines as members polished their pot helmets or dusted off their gaudy plumes. To complete TZs civil war re-enactment a band of Clubmen formed a third front just because. But in a move that would have had any committed re-enactor breaking out into a cold sweat and complaining bitterly about "authenticity" we all wore watches (any fule knoweth that wrist bourne timepieces had not been invented in 1642). So let us examine, in an unhealthy level of detail, the cause of these cold sweats.

A total of 523 watches were worn over the four Fridays of May (sounds like a long forgotten English Folk Revival collective). This is a little more than in April but not as much as February. The weekly average crept above 130 by 0.75. A total of 127 different brands were represented which is the second highest this year and the monthly diversity increased to 0.243 which is a new high for the year. Impressively every week of May saw a diversity of over 0.430 with the weekly record of 0.480 being equaled. This means that we are within a gnat's crochet of having an average of two watches for every brand worn (a diversity of 0.500) which I think would be a fantastic achievement if we could make it.

Right, lets enter the muddy sty and wrestle with the piggy details. Friday the fifth saw a brace of ties, Omega and Seiko on thirteen and Rolex and sty-mate Tudor just behind on twelve. The following week Panerai so nearly became only the fourth brand to top the weekly charts but Rolex snuck in at the last minute to steal the prize with eleven. Seiko and Omega struggled to keep up with nine and seven respectively. On the fifteenth Omega slipped further down to fifth while Seiko rose to the top with eighteen. In between there were Rolex (fifteen), Tudor (eight) and Panerai with six. Accomapnying Omega on five were Sinn, Timefactors, IWC and Grand Seiko. On the twenty sixth Rolex barged their way to the top again, with nineteen leaving Seiko and Omega trailing behind on eleven a piece.

A quick scan through the results of the also-rans shows the usual mix of highs and lows. Breitling's woes continue, dropping to four monthly examples. A long way off their highs of a couple of years ago when four would have been a low weekly number. Scurfa reached a new high for the year of three, only one behind their record high. Fortis also had a strong month hitting a dizzying six, their highest score this year. Whereas G-chock have been in steady decline all year, starting on twelve they have steadily dropped down to May's four, equaling their all time low. I expect, as members head off on holidays their numbers may pick up. All time lows have been flirted with but one, usually popular brand, did record a new one. Only three example of Damasko's were worn in May.

I am glad that I take notes during the counts as I wouldn't be able to remember even the finest watches that were worn way back in May. My digital scribblings suggest that Gladders' burgundy dialed AP 11.59 stood out as did bazza.'s Isotope Hydrium Exit (not surprising, I work in the fire safety world). Kamakazie!'s Alexander Shorokoff had the dial colour analyst scratching their head. One of the Dirty Dozen made a rare appearance as trident-7 wore his IWC. And to close out the month a couple more vintage timepieces: martinzx's Seiko Seahorse and alfat33's lovely Helvetia Depthomatic.
