Recently got a new Mac Mini M1 as my office computer after a late 2015 27” iMac gave up the ghost.
The thing is proper fast, Photoshop, Acrobat etc run like a breeze, but the thing cannot cope with Apple Mail!
I don’t think I’m a heavy emailer, probably deal with around 200 a day, but the Mail app just hangs all the bloody time and it’s so infuriating!
I’m thinking of switching to Outlook, how is that done? Is it easy?

I was going to ask the same thing about email host. I use Gmail and use the excellent Mimestream as a mail client.
We use Fashosts, Mail worked fine on the old iMac with the same setup?
I just get the beachball constantly, a quick Google shows I’m not the only one hence why I was cosindering Outlook, but can’t see a way to export and import all my emails?

I can’t see how the issue is Fasthosts?
It’s not the send and receive that’s the problem, it’s running the app in general, just clicking the compose new email icon brings up the beachball for a few seconds!
I use Spark, really useful Mail app, works across all Apple devices and isn’t a memory hog on my Mac Mini M2 Pro
I use the email client 'Thunderbird' on my macs. It's free to download. Works well for me.
Agree, sounds like a local machine issue and not a connectivity or hosting issue.
I’d be tempted to check for software updates and see if that fixes the freezing. If not I’d check for directions on reinstalling the default mail app.
There could be a very slight chance your email history is just massive and you could try limiting the mailbox to something like 1 year max.
I had an issue with my work Mac and email which bizarrely turned out to be that the IPv6 option was set.
On occasion the connect to the mail server would be set as IP6 and it would hang. If it used IP4 it worked fine. Helpdesk set the switch to just use IP4 and it worked fine.
I've always had problems with Mail on my Macs over the years, since I moved over to Thunderbird no problems at all. For some reason Mail isn't a great piece of software which is strange as its designed for Mac!? Move over to Thunderbird (works great on my Mac Studio and a Mac Mini) it's a far superior option.
I've used Mail since its very first inception, never had a problem with any of my 24 email accounts.
Mail problems? Try this procedure which I send to many clients (2,000 of them in total - been a Mac consultant for 12 years). It pretty much fixes any problems with Mail.
Outlook is terrible.

Quit Mail
Open Finder
Click on Go on the top menu bar
Hold ALT/Option on the keyboard
Whilst holding, click on Library from the Go list
Open the folder named Mail
Open the highest numbered ‘V’ folder
Open the folder named Maildata
Look for some files named Envelope Index. There may be three or more
Drag them to the Trash
Empty the Trash
Open Mail and set it importing

Yes. All it does is remove the envelope index (whether corrupt or not), and then forces Mail to reindex all the emails.
It will not delete any email data, either from the computer or the server.
I'd use Outlook.
Is what I use on my iPhone and used on Mac Mini in the past.
I've used Mail for 10+ years on Apple phones and machines, never any problem. My traffic is about a quarter of yours though.
I have 2 "V" folders, V2 and V10? V2 just has an accounts.plist in when I drill down? This has a creation date of 2015 so I presume carried over from my backup and restore off my old Mac Time Machine?
V10 has several "envelope folders (see attached), do I delete all?

There should be three env index files, you have seven with the latter four being damaged.
Drag all seven to the trash, empty it, open Mail and run the import.
Don't worry if it fails the first time. Open Mail a second time and it'll complete.

And yes, earlier V folders are legacy folders. Ignore the V2 folder.

I have circa 250,000 in my inbox, and another 100k in folders. It's not a problem for Mail.
However some accounts can occasionally cause the tmp index files to get locked up, but that procedure always clears it.
You may never have to do it again.

That's ok. They'll disappear once it's resynced with the server fully.
Does Mail work properly now?
To set your mind at rest about the other env index files, Mail on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro on macOS 14 Sonoma beta runs flawlessly, but the Maildata folder is as thus...
It's not that they shouldn't be there, but any corrupt ones removed from here will sort Mail out.

No, I don't use IMAP I use POP and always have.

POP?! No wonder you're having problems. POP is long gone, and full support by Apple was ditched with OS X El Capitan (also long gone).
Time to get on to Fasthosts and get migrated to IMAP buddy.

Sincere apologies, my IT guy set all the business email up but retired during Covid and I haven't had any time (or inclination) to change it until now!
Our Fasthosts user accounts are small (20gb for each member of staff, 22 accounts) so IMAP is a bit of a pain as we get so many large emails (with attachments) each day.
Happy to be advised on best route to take?
