    Broke my leg

    Absolutely s%cks!
Had to have surgery they put in a plate and screws to hold it together down by the ankle. I am trying to keep busy but limited to TV, tablet and phone. Spend way to much time looking at watches this could be the most expensive lesson ever!

That is rubbish, I broke my tibula playing rugby a few years ago. recovery was hardwork and still have issues with it now although that is due to the ligament damage sustained in same injury. Hopefully your recovery goes smoothy!

I was signed off work for 6 weeks and at the start was unbelievably bored. By the end my time was filled with a plethora of useless youtube channels and I was disappointed to be be going back to work. haha

Sorry to hear this, I broke tib and fib and also compound fracture where the foot had rotated 60 degrees. Oh and knackered my knee as well.

You should get physio as soon as you possibly can, do not delay it!! Also, wear compression socks to help reduce swelling, were a bloody godsend for me.

Other than that, physio, physio, physio. Hoping you haven't got any screws that are holding it all the way through. Had to have mine removed 14 months after the break as I had no mobility in my ankle at all. It's the 2 running left to right in the picture below.

    Speedy recovery

Ouch, hope you recover as quickly as possible. Need gory details about how you did it, though.

Not if you don't have decent medical insurance, I'd guess.

I broke it on the stairs. My daughters dog wanted to come to the basement and I went up and opened the door for her. When I moved out of the way, she likes to barrel down the stairs, I swung to the left and voila daughters shoe was there. Well it was like ice on a pond and off I went. Unfortunately my right foot felt like it was attached to the stair and would not go.

I was wearing my work boots, I wear 8" ones so it keeps my ankle from twisting on jobsites, so I don't know if it helped or hurt. The hospital told my wife to pull the boot off she did 3 laces and tried to pull it off ... if you have never heard a grown man scream and cry at once your lucky. Nurse had to come in to unlace it fully to get if off.

Don't know who I hate more daughter, daughter's dog or evil wife who probably knew the pain I'd be in trying to pry the boot off my swollen ankle.

Well, I had the staples removed today, over 20, painful as hell. I think it hurt worse than breaking the bone. All in all ended up with 7 screws and a plate as long as the incision. I could only see the small incision at the top of the picture and thought that was it afterall was said and done

The Dr. originally said it would be a small plate and 2 screws and worse case scenario would be 4. I couldn't see the side view and had my friend take a picture because he was oohing an owing and thought what's the big deal. Well big surprise to me...for the faint of heart stop here! picture below

Well on the mend though. The most important thing now is to do your physio.

Snap!! I've one on the other side too.

Have you put any weight on it yet? I had to have a cast for 12 weeks, no weight bearing etc. First time I put weight on it I went very white, came out in a sweat and nearly threw up. Very weird sensation!

Hoping you are back at it soon.

i really shouldn't have looked at the picture as i'm squeamish as f**k.Bbut as a regular footballer still at 55 i'm paranoid that its still going to happen to me and have to have a 'car crash' peak.

I had that feeling after a really minor break in my foot. God knows what that would have felt like.

OP that looks painful as hell. Good luck on the recovery, hope you have something fun like Tramadol to ease the pain?

Tylenol and aspirin. They only give a few oxy's to get you through for a week. i still have 5 left as I only use them to sleep at night.

It is worth to have checked your blood levels of vitamin D, vitamin C, vit K and calcium - if borderline or low you may aid healing slightly wit supplements.

Limit Your Intake of Salt, Caffeine, sugary drinks and colas - which are reported to slow bone apposition.

Anything that interferes with circulation to the bone, including smoking and drinking alcohol should be avoided, and anti inflammatories should be stopped after the initial few days, if prescribed.

Some published physical therapies (ultrasounds , laser pulse etc) are useless.

Moderate exercise in water, some aerobic exercise can help if directed and supervised by a specialist.

It’s a good combo, but guessing with the whole Oxy issue in the US they are a bit tighter on the good stuff these days.

Good luck with the recovery & choose your 5 nights of sleep wisely. Might be worth trying Tylenol PM when you run out, has a drowsy antihistamine in it.

Equally buy the own brand versions - I always stock up when I’m state side, and the size of your acetaminophen bottles are mental given we can only buy 16 unless a pharmacist is involved and it goes to a massive 36!

So my update now is I can now walk and drive and have been for about 3 weeks. I have a lot of trouble walking but if you have never lost the ability to walk or drive you'll never know how bad things can be losing independence. I thought I would be 100% by now and according to the surgeon I should be by now and he wasn't nice about it.

I know two people who have broke their ankle one with plates and screws, like me, and the other without both told me 6 months just like my physical therapist said. I am also no spring chicken so healing time will take longer based on the internet . I have a major problem at night trying to sleep lots of pain more so than during the day I am now taking a med to help me sleep but it still only helps a little some nights I only get 3 hours if I'm lucky.

I am very happy to have my independence back the biggest reason is I no longer have to ask evil AKA the wife for a ride my god you'd thought I'd had asked for another child!

Anyway that's my update and if your a doctor or surgeon I no longer like you!

    Sounds an ordeal John.

I hope you start feeling a lot better soon.

Never a good thing to have to rely on the wife's generosity when it comes to driving you around!

Second the comment about physio above. I broke my left leg by snapping it backwards - it hurt a bit . Then I had to have a piece of my hip removed to mend the compression break in the top of my Tibia. The physio was intensive, but it worked.

I wish you a speedy recovery - hopefully, in time, it will just be a distant memory.

Physio is definitely your friend. I broke my 20 plus years ago. Bad break had surgery and was told I would probably limp for the rest of my life. There was no way that was happening so I rotated and extended my ankle for hours everyday. After 15 weeks I was walking normally, even the physio was impressed. Persistence pays off. Ps I broke it dropping in on a half pipe on a skateboard… which I never tried before, stupid is an understatement.

Trust me some of the stories you guys tell about breaking your legs sounds a whole lot worse than my break. Either way I wish this was in the past like yours.

It well get better over time John.

    A little story....

Back in the day my youngest went skiing in Canada and broke his leg.

When he came home, Deana our English bull terrier had meanwhile also broken her leg leaping up in the air as they do. Deana had bolts in her leg and we had to take her to the vet once a week for tightening.

I used to have a picture of them both together with their broken limbs.

They both got over it fine with ne'er a problem.
    Cheers,
    Neil.
