Anyone drive an older Volvo XC90?

At the moment I’m mulling over getting one of these and wondering if they are a money pit. The one I’m considering is a 2010, low mileage for the year and full Volvo history including all the belts being changed.

It wouldn’t get much use here say 5k miles per year at the most but having something I could throw a load of gear in would be very useful.

I realise it won’t be complaint with the big city clean air zones but that’s not an issue where we live.

    Any thoughts?

I had a 2007 which my dad now uses as a workhorse. It does seem to have an unusual amount of niggles but (touch wood) nothing serious at all. I'd have another in a heartbeat but I don't need anything quite that size.

We have the newer model (65 plate) and my brother in law has the older model (12 plate I think).

Older model does seem pretty agricultural and has had a few issues in his ownership. Also heavy on fuel, although less of an issue at 5k miles per year I suppose.

If it is a D5 the engines are bullet proof. Just make sure the aux belt and tensioner has been changed every 54k miles, as they have a habit of seizing, snapping and taking the cam belt with it.

Wife had a 2004 D5. Kept it for 10 years and sold it to someone local and I still see it around. Hard on tyres but you can get plenty brands for them now. Other than that absolutely bullet proof. The interior was particularly hard wearing and looked fabulous after years of lugging around 3 growing lads and all their kit

D5 I was looking at but yes the belts have been done by Volvo.

I ran a 2010 XC90 D5 from new for 10 years/90K miles. Almost flawless, cambelt and water pump at 10 years/100K whichever is the sooner, auto gearbox fluid change at 80K, only issue was a seized spare wheel holder when we had our first and only puncture at about year 9. Less than £100 to sort. Find a good specialist (mine was/is Voltech in Glasgow, Scotland largest).

Brilliant, practical car only sold when I changed jobs to one with company car, would still be running it into ground otherwise.

Wife runs an 08 D5. Had it 12 years now and 150k on the clock. Always serviced at Volvo but very expensive so we are now considering going indy with it moving forwards. However, if you service at Volvo you get free breakdown cover for 12 months. Its been great over the years, taking us on numerous holidays in France and the UK. 3 kids, full with stuff and the added benefit of 7 seats if we need to carry friends or family around. Very comfortable to sit in too.

Goes through front tyres quite quickly which is a downside. I'd change it but the wife loves it and 50-60k for a new one can't be justified so I expect that we'll run it into the ground

I just crashed a 2009 XC60 a few weeks ago. Gutted. Most versatile car we have had.
Pulled like a train, solid as you like and never needed any major work in the 6 years we had it.

The front end of the van I hit was obliterated into a million pieces. The Volvo faired substantially better !

We run a 2005 D5 Auto, and I have a love hate relationship with it.

It's done 200k, so there are lots of items that have needed replacing within the past couple of years. Its latest issues are a noisy alternator clutch, so a new one was ordered......... but the old clutch has proved to be impossible to remove from the alternator. Last week an injector started leaking, but it was repaired for about a quid as it only needed a new washer.

If you're handy with the spanners - get one. If you tend to put it into a garage for repairs I'd think twice about buying a really old one.

There are a couple of good xc90 groups on FB - have a racing goose over there

BTW the turning circle is atrocious - tight manoeuvres should be planned well in advance.

The old D5 did an average of 26mpg on ordinary diesel, which was quite a thirst. On my 2006 model the power steering and steering rack went as did the front suspension arms. From memory that was over £1500 to fix. There was an expensive bill when the four wheel drive went two wheel. The entertainment module also went, but taking out the centre console to replace it was relatively easy. Standard service at Volvo seemed to be about £800 and not much less with all the bits that went wrong even when taken to an independent. In six years of ownership, I think I spent over £9k on maintenance and repairs. Sold it eventually because it was so expensive to run. Never again, an absolute money pit.

Had a look at new prices...Basic Core model XC90 is £62,140 to Ultimate £78,453, the Recharge plug in hybrid is from £72,200 to £83,295 and full electric from £96,255 to £100,555.

On topic friend had one, juicy and not bad reliability wise but they'd moved it on at relatively low mileage.

Where to you get 26 mpg from for a D5? Stop start gridlocked city traffic and absolutely caning it between the traffic lights?

On a long motorway run at 65 mph I get up to 55 mpg from my 2009 model.

My D5 in 14 years of continuous ownership has cost me barely any more than servicing costs. YMMV.

The full electric is the brand new EX90, not an XC90.

As does mine - but it is an auto (bad for mpg) but I live in very rural france (very good for mpg).

... the on board computer. You are correct, I don't waft about at 55mph for hundreds of miles, but I'm not a traffic light racer either. It's a two ton car with a 2.4ll diesel - it is quite thirsty. I just looked it up in Parkers guide and it quotes 33mpg combined. The manufacturer stated levels of fuel consumption are rarely achievable in the real world, so I'm not sure I was that far out getting 26mpg. Also, it was mostly driven by my wife who certainly isn't a boy racer.

Cripes! Even more reason to run the one we have until it dies.

I have had a 2015 D5 for 3 years. Great car, no issues.

Little thirsty but I don’t do massive mileage.

Slightly off tangent , but we ran a 2003 V70 estate with the D5 163bhp diesel for 12 years until it became too small for three teenage sons.

In that time it was totally reliable, apart from a in-tank low pressure fuel pump which manifested as poor starting.

Obvs no 4wd, but it always returned high 30’s mpg, mid 40’s on a run, and no DPF !
I would happily buy another one tomorrow if we had a practical use for it.

You can identify the engine bhp from the colour of the plastic engine cover - I know that 163bhp is black.
