I remember the episode of the Antiques Roadshow
A 5512 if I remember correctly and the back story / provenance could add to the sale price.

This one I believe

£77 was a lot of money back then. months wages?
I remember when the Paul Newman Daytona went for $18m, the auctioneers said it was something like $250 when bought new.
It is a fantastic story. The estimate has a range of £15,000 which shows they are not too sure of how to value it.

Looks to be a nice example, case looks to be in good shape, gilt underline dial, hands and bezel seem to match, pointed crown guards. Hopefully it goes for strong money and continues to be enjoyed for many years.
Scruffy old watch, I’ll never see the appeal of these things.
Later service replacement bezel insert I’m guessing. You never know, someone may grab a bargain, I’m sure the dealers will be keeping an eye on it.

And amazingly, we have a 5512 gilt dial right here on SC, only £13,500, without the provenance mind, but seems a good buy in comparison.
With that underline and the interesting provenance I think it will do well, but it's not a watch or scenario that would see me bidding without examining the watch in person.
Interestingly, back in February someone posted a picture of one on another forum whose case number was fewer than 400 away from this one. That also had an underline.....but in a different place.
This thread lacks some visual stimulus, so here's a gratuitous pic of my very slightly earlier 5513 with both underline AND "double SWISS" text, presented to the owner of our 1962 America's Cup team :

Should be sold by 10:30 this morning, will keep an eye on how it does.
Update: hammer price £40,000.00 - that’s over £50,000.00 with fees etc.
Good result I think.

Dealer or a private buyer purchase?
I thought it might attract higher bids given the unique provenance but it's a good result for the seller.
Watchmakers' tools were in the auction https://auctions.twgaze.co.uk/catalo...locks-watches/

"Well they would say that ... wouldn't they!"
Interestingly, having viewed the auction on line , the winning bid of £40k was the opening and only bid .
The lowest estimate at the suction house was £35k , however the auctioneer tried her luck with £40k to start and indeed that’s where it opened and closed .
Haywards , example and images are stunning … thank you for sharing , todays “champagne moment “ for me .

The guy who sold me his 5513 bought it new in 1968 from the Naffi shop Singapore to celebrate passing his RN diving course. I asked if he remembered what he paid and he said "about £65, I didnt have to pay any purchase tax or duty at the time"..I bought it from him in 2016 for £8.5k so not a bad return plus he wore if for most of the years that he owned it. A £65 Rolex was once a reality...
