Thread: Watches you were enthusiastic about but you now couldn't care less

Watches you were enthusiastic about but you now couldn't care less

Yeah, long title but... I left out "when they were launched"

So, for me it has to be:

    Sumo.
It was the poor man's MM with all kudos and great price, I remember seeing one in the steel while on my honeymoon in a mexican resort and thinking: I must speak to this dude.
Then it was too bulky, I just lost interest.

    Smiths Prs40
It was THE ultimate hard core nato watch with supercool iconic design.
Then, I dunno, I'm just not so into natos as I thought. I just got cold turkey.

    What about you?

For me it's a general enthusiasm for in-house movements and a COSC chronometer. I used to think they were essential to be a proper watch etc.

The reverse is also true though, I used to roll my eyes at the submariner as a hairy chested cliche, but now love them in all guises.

    Tastes change...

When I was younger I was in love with Rado, looking back I've no idea why!

Luckily for me my tastes have improved =)

I thought it was cool AF whilst at Uni

Green dials. I've had a couple, sold one still have one and think it's a great colour but just don't seem to wear it. Still find myself looking at other green dials though now with that knowledge I'm more cautious!

MoonSwatch, Bel Canto and Ming come to mind.
(which isn't to say any of them are bad)

There have been sooooooo many thwarted watch-boners that went floppy soon afterwards, but the ones that spring to mind are the most-recent Tudor Fastriders, a lot of CW stuff, and various (((THICC))) divers by the likes of Helm, H2O, Kaventsmann, Spinnaker Piccard and Dievas...

Not so much 'when they were launched' but 'before I had one', the MM300. Just couldn't see what all the fuss was about once I bought it.

The vast majority of diver's watches. Owned a good few in my time but just do nothing for me now.

Seamaster 300 Bond, and the early (Casino Royale) Planet ocean.

Wanted them desperately, eventually bought a Submariner then eventually fell out of love with them. Part of it is the HEV, but even allowing for that, just lost the love.

Not so much when the watches were launched, but certain watches I really liked and almost added to the collection leave me stone cold thesedays whilst my interest in vintage watches doesn`t diminish. I`ve had a couple of Rolex Subs and almost added a bimetal sub with black dial to the collection, but nowadays they really don't interest me. The Omega Aqua Terra's another, I had the 38mm second generation with 8500 movement, kept it a few years then sold it on with no regrets, there's no way I`d be looking to own another although the original 36mm version (which I also owned) still holds some appeal......but not at the money they sell for!

The Omega Seamaster Professional 'Black Bond', launched around 2008/9, was a watch I really loved when I first saw it, eventually I bought one second-hand in near mint condition but hardly ever wore it, I sold that last year and haven`t missed it, still a nice watch but not something I wear thesedays.

Pretty much everything in the Rolex catalogue - owned and enjoyed them into double figures a few years back.

The price hikes do not make them worth it these days, coupled to them being a popular choice with chavs and influencers etc. turns me off completely.

I've had a couple, still got one but I simply don't get the obsession, and anything with the Seiko NH35 movement - I know it's a reliable "workhorse" but it seems to be the first choice for overpriced micro brands.

Anything where it's a massive bunfight to be able to buy the product. Seems to be common pain-point for a lot of brands ranging from the micro to the massive.

I don't mind waiting for a product/production window, assuming there are no games to play to get onto the list to get something, but the timed release or procession of special/limited releases that are massively over-subscribed does rub me the wrong way, especially companies that either can't or don't keep their perfectly good and desirable standard models available.

I have a great deal of sympathy for smaller companies who get caught unawares or choose not to scale beyond a certain point but still have massive demand and expectations to deal with, but regardless it does take the shine off for me. It's not to say I'll never buy anything from these companies, or I "couldn't care less", as per the OP's title, but it certainly makes for a frustrating experience.

Honestly, nothing….. if I liked it of old, on some level I like it now. That looks to be unusual… my taste has evolved but instead of rotating my likes, I like more things.

I bought one and it's a genuine POS.

When I can be bothered it's on SC or an Ebay £1 offer.

You're welcome to it of course. Suits you sir.

    I go through this.

Once I thought I would have a Daytona then I saw one.

Then I almost bought a Monaco more than once, but in the end the want faded away, similarly with the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, not that I could ever afford one!

Skeleton dials. I thought they were the bees knees. Then I bought one, and couldn't tell the time in anything other than excellent light.

    IWC Portuguese

When I first took an interest in watches I thought it was the most amazing watch out there, dont know why but never got to buying one and never saw one in any jewellers (Seemed to be just IWC dive watches and pilot watches) Bought a Dornbluth and more than happy with it. Now IWC seem to be falling over themselves to up their prices I really couldnt care less.

    Serica

Was really interested in getting one especially the tuxedo dial version but they are sold out now. The screw down crown put me off a little and having a CWC and a handwind military style watch anyway I just lost interest.

    Most Seiko watches

Numerous "limited edition" watches designs that are just all over the place and many grand Seiko watches in spite of the high polish just look really ugly to me. What really put me off was a thread on here a few years ago where someone had a GS (One that was actually on my list to buy) and found the baton on the dial had corroded really badly (seems it was some sort of base metal just highly polished) Seiko were not exactly helpful in dealing with the issue either.

Nothing much interests me these days with watches prices going up, waiting lists, book an appointment, speak to our "consultant/expert" no thanks

I thought I wanted the Grand Seiko Quartz GMT SBGN003 until I tried it on.

Case height was too tall for a quartz watch, and the proportions with 19mm bracelet just felt "off". The much vaunted GS finishing was also decidedly "meh". I have the Casio Oceanus OCW-S100 and it is a much better watch.

Sacrilege I know, but the Seiko SBDX001 was a massive flop.

I longed for one for many moons, loved the clarity and style and finish.

    Bought one. Meh. Sold it.

Badly balanced in terms of weight (far too top heavy and tall for its dimensions), pathetic bracelet for that price range, and problematic at service time being a monocoque case. Also not very accurate at all.

There are 2 watches that spring to mind, both of which I was convinced would be perfect until I tried them on.

Datejust 41 - just wore too big for this type of watch.

Pelagos 39 - amazingly it felt too small AND too thick. I really wasn't expecting that.

Honorable mention to the current 36mm Datejust. The previous supercase 116*** were just about ok size wise but the new ones are just too small imo. We need a 37/38mm Datejust really.

PP Aquanaut. Might be the overpricing but generally I think the design is looking a bit aged now.

MKII Kingston: I pre-ordered one of the very first batch, waited and waited for it and believe it was delivered two years after I put the initial money down. Opened the box, and while it was nicely proportioned and a faithful homage to the gilt dialed sub, it just left me cold. I tried to like it, but sold it on within a month of receiving it.

That Newmark I just bought really did nothing for me, straight back into the box it went. Maybe get it out again in a year or so, who knows, tastes change.

For me, the Reverso. I was absolutely obsessed and planned to get one as soon as funds allowed.

Bought the massive hardback photobook, kept window shopping every time I was near a boutique or in an airport. Spent time on Chrono24.

Then watched as the price went up 40% in less than two years.

I find it much less appealing now, and transferred my affections to the Santos, which is also much more practical watch in terms of water resistance etc.

But that's going up in price too.

I find in general I see a gorgeous new watch on one of the blogs, scroll down to see the price, let out a grunt of dismay, then close the tab and never think about it again.

Biggest was the Tag Monaco. Lusted after one for years especially as we share a birth year. The 50th anniversary versions came and left me a bit cold, I wanted the blue or gulf any way. I was in Vancouver and the wife said go try it on. I did and in seconds knew it just wasn’t for me.
Also as someone mentioned above Rado, I remember gazing at them in jewellers windows during the 80’s and thinking they were amazing. Every so often I browse eBay for something but want and cheap never intersect. I would have a Captain Cook IF I didn’t already have a Breitling SOH.

If it helps, I had the 37mm Captain Cook, and while it was a lovely watch, the crown was tiny and slippery and almost impossible to turn. Really made it a frustrating experience to pick out of the watch box and wind.

That being the case I can only assume the creation of the Nautilus was GG was out on the tiles with the design teams from Accurist and Citizen and they put a bet on as to who could create the ugliest watch between them. Accurist and Citizen tried hard but even they couldnt come up with something as bad as that.

This has been my experience with every MKII I have ever bought. I tend to love his ideas and the designs and what he is trying to do, but as soon as they arrive I have looked at them and gone meh and they rarely get worn. They are all sold now and I don’t miss them.

TAG Monaco 69. Lusted after one, and then bought one - far too thick a watch, worn once and sold within a week.

Digital Breitling - almost any. Had quite a few over the years and won’t go back.

The Seiko MM300. Tried far too many times - love the dial, hands and case shape - hate almost everything else and just hardly wore them - I tried that model 4 times FFS lol

Micro brands in general. I spent a lot trying most of the designs I liked up until around 5-6 years ago (could be slightly longer given I always miss to add a couple of COVID years in my memories), but lost a lot of money for very little overall enjoyment.
It's just a matter of time...

    Speedy pro

I had one on leather, solid case back, proper acrylic crystal.

    Hated it.

I thought it was overpriced, too delicate and the dial had no depth and limited wrist presence. That said, this was 10 years ago and my tastes have changed so if one came up at the right price, I'd be tempted to try again, particularly on a bracelet

This sums it up for me too. I prefer vintage these days, but also a bezel for timing lunch/tea breaks etc. So sports watches, that aren't dive watches (and smaller with manual wind movements) from the 70's/80's are the way to go for me.

Having said that, I did pull out from long storage my first ever swiss diver - a 37mm Tag Heuer on bracelet - the Classic, that was very popular in the 90's. Mine is the quartz version, but love the compact look, and 9mm thickness makes this watch really easy to wear. Sent it off to Tag for a service.

As a result of the above, I am also discovering the utter convenience of a quartz watch again, after decades of mechanicals.

Completely agree. I had my name down for it, but passed when I tried it on. Too small (and I'm below average at 6.75"). Lovely watch, if only another 2-4mm. I keep waiting ...

This will come as a surprise to many but the Smiths PRS-29 underwhelmed me massively. Maybe it was the hype. Maybe I waited too long and the hype built my expectations. I thought it felt cheap.

Put my name down on the “interest” list as soon as they came out. Not a word from the AD more than a year on. Then Rolex topped it with the DeepSea Challenge anyway.
