    Matte vs. Glossy dials?

I'm thinking about having a vintage black dial refinished, on a watch I'm considering buying. What are the pros/cons of matte and glossy dials? I'm not sure which type is original to the watch.

Knowing the type of watch and age would be a good start PC.
Refurbished dials never look great but depending on the damage could make a watch wearable.

Disagree with the above comments, a refinished dial can look far better than a battered scruffy original. I’ve had quite a few done over the years, getting the print correct isn’t always possible depending on font type and replicating a very fine sunburst finish couldn’t be done by the firms I used. Silvered dials generally never quite look the same, black dials are easier.

Without seeing the watch its hard to advise on gloss vs matt, really does depend on the watch.

I disagree with the above comments…
It’s obvious when it has been done and never looks as good as the original, however it can make a watch wearable.

That looks as if the dial has been done already
Look at the off centre text
That is the risk you run, if the outcome is poor you are stuck with it.
Dependant on condition it may make it wearable but if in worse condition that the example posted then I might be inclined to give it a swerve and look for a better example.

Definitely get a quote for having the dial restored before agreeing to buy. Last one I had done in the UK was around £75, but that was 5 years ago and I`d expect to pay significantly more.

As for gloss v matt, I think I`d go gloss, but not too glossy.

Refinished dials are often maligned by the so-called purists, but you have to be realistic. These watches may be 70+ years old, they weren't waterproof, dials can deteriorate to an extent where they look a mess and let the watch down. I get no pleasure from a scruffy watch with a scruffy dial on a faux scruffy strap, I like watches to look as they were iintended and if that means compromising on a refinished dial I`ll do it. Light patina is one thing, that's fine, but I see no attraction to scruffy.

I'd try and get a better one Tom.

I know that's not the one you are looking at but case in point, it has a horribly refinished dial and the hollow lug is worn through.

There are plenty of that style of watches available in the US as they are pretty unfashionable now.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Purely a matter of personal opinion? Go for what you like best.

    😊

On the particular watch you've posted I would prefer a more glossy dial. It's a completely personal choice but the smallness of the watch would allow for a glossy dial that would not overwhelm the other features I feel.
