How old is the battery? How old is the MacBook? If it wasn’t used much, how was it stored?
Batteries deteriorate with age and also don’t like being stored with no charge.
Am I right to be angry that after just 30 cycles my battery needs replaced in a VERY seldom used MBP and at my cost?
Apple Support saying it’s nothing to do with them cause of the device age.
30 cycles seems extreme!

Same thing happened to me, 54 cycles but needed a new battery cos it was 5 years old

My question on how was it stored was related to the charge level. It’s best to store a battery at around 50% charge.
I’d be pissed. Check this Apple doc. I think cycle count should be 1000 before needing replacement?
Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. For best performance, replace your battery when the maximum cycle count has been reached.

My 2015 MBP also needs a battery service, but a bit of a higher battery count to yours (currently 1,030).
For me the answer was it gets used on mains power 99.9% of the time…

That’s my point. Surely the battery would last longer that after just 30 cycles. Backstory is it was bought for a specific project that didn’t materialise and so put away and kept boxed up but taken out very infrequently to make sure the OS was utd and email downloaded.
I now need the use of it and when I plugged it in it said battery service required. Quick check of system showed 30 cycles and battery dead as a dead thing.
Apple support giving party line of, it needs replaced. But they encouraged me to visit Apple Store and hope for sympathetic hearing from a manager for them to cover cost.

Now have a booked Genius Bar appt for Friday in Edinburgh. Let’s see how good my charm offensive is in the face of negotiation!

Maybe take some of your other Apple products along (or get them to access your account) and I’m sure you’ll be fine. Apple seem to be pretty loyal to their loyal customers.
I was impressed when I took mine in last year (they claimed it wasn't needing a battery replacement at that time, it is now, presumably as it has passed the 1000 mark). I'll pop back in due course.
Tell them you're in a rush with Number One and H&I appointments to follow. Best of luck.
Update:
Battery replaced FOC by the good and understanding people at Apple Store, Edinburgh.
Took them less than 6hrs to do it. Well chuffed!
