Longines www “dirty dozen” on Antiques Roadshow

    Anyone see it?
Acquired it in a swap with a snide Rolex

It reminded me that I once had a peach which I sold for around £1500.

It was up there high on my list of most regretted sales. Other notables: French airforce VIXA chronograph, French navy Auricoste Spirotechnique, Swedish Tg195, British Lemania chronograph, Sinn EZM1……..

God that Fiona Bruce best, better, palaver is dull and irritating.

I believe it’s ONLY the Dirty Dozen that have WWW stamped on the back as well. At least he got in the ballpark for the value. I wouldn’t have felt guilty giving the punter £600 seeing that he traded it for a known fake Rolex.

He also said the radium had washed off.
Didn’t look that was to me tbh.

I think he meant to say it had decayed.

I noted that error in his appraisal. Pointed it out to the wife who just rolled her eyes.

Not just Smiths, but other English makers too. Because there were so many of them!

But Smiths did make some wristwatches for the MoS in 1944. Not many though.

And does 'WWW' really stand for "Wrist Watch Waterproof", as the 'expert' said, or 'Wristlet ... '?

Upon reflection, you may be right.
I don’t think it has though, surely radium will still be potentially harmful, if the dial was removed?
No hazard for the wearer, more for the repairer.

Yes Radium will still be very ‘hot’
There is a train of thought that it can be harmful for the owner not just the watchmaker
Especially if stored in an air tight box, the radon gas can build up and is released when the box is opened, especially if you are like me and have quid a few radium dialled watches in your watch box.

Yes, depending on the isotope it could have a half life of 1600 years (radium 226). It is decaying all the time, but as mentioned above would still be very "hot".

Correct. The identifier came from British War Office Specification R.S./Prov/4373A "Watches, Wristlet, Waterproof" (W.W.W.) for Service wristwatches.
