Unhappy Radio 2..It ain’t the same without Ken

One of my simple pleasures in life was to listen to the Ken Bruce show, and have a bash at the pop quiz every morning. Now that he’s moved on it just ain’t the same.

Agreed. The new pop quiz really doesn’t work for me either.
I don’t mind Gary Davies but again, not so keen on Vernon Kay.

I suppose we’ll get used to it though.

Did he own Pop Master or can Vernon Kay carry it on ?

I suspect BBC has the rights to it.

^^^ I think that Ken has taken pop master with him.

I certainly won’t be listening to Vernon Kay.

I think he's taken it with him to new position with Greatest Hits Radio.

Nobody likes change. I'm sure you'll all get used to Vernon. I've never listened to R2 (I'm too young) and hadn't ever heard of Ken Bruce until he hit the news for leaving.

I'll miss Popmaster but not Ken so much, always seemed a bit smug for my liking.

When I was off work everything stopped for Pop Master. And when I was back at work I used to try to schedule meetings around it.
Now I only switch on the radio when Sarah Cox is on and if I'm in the shed after work Jo Wylie plays pretty decent music so I'll listen to her too

Zoe Ball needs to shut her gob now and then and let others get a word in, and Jeremy Vine just has me ranting at the radio.

They should have hired Rob Brydon to present the show after Bruce left.

How b****y young are you?! I remember when Jimmy Young was the lively young upstart on R2...

If you regularly drove long-distances before the advent of modern routing apps with real-time updates, you used to be pretty much forced to listen to R2 as they had the best traffic updates...

...which was pretty hellish to be fair, since they have had some of the most annoying DJs ever to thieve oxygen - Vanessa Felch, Chris "The Human Haemorrhoid" Evans and the one of humanity's all-time low-points:
    Steve Wrong...

I only ever used to listen in the mornings… and the evenings. As soon as Vine came on the radio went off, Steve Wright was so far past his sell by date it wasn’t funny.

I found Bob Harris and Trevor Nelson easy listening in the evenings..

R2 sort of died for me when Terry Wogan left, but at least Ken still had that old school BBC broadcasting professionalism to keep me listening to the station, until now.
Zoe Ball, Scott Mills, Rylan, the Welsh fella, all R1 has beens moved into the middle aged listener segment, pah?

100% agree - Vine is just an annoying prat, Wright is in a time warp.

We've moved from R2 to Boom Radio.
Sound quality better plus they play a lot of music R2 don't (even Pink Floyd & Genesis) and give interesting stories to the track playing.
Give it a try on Dab+

Please get rid of that Scott mills in the afternoon. How he's managed to stay on the BBC for so long is beyond me. All he does is shout about nothing.

Radio 2..It ain’t the same without Ken

Problem with Greatest Hits radio is the terribly childish & pathetic the adverts are. And there are lots and lots of them.
Imagine how bad the ones they rejected were !

You think Zoe Ball is bad?

Try listening to Liza Tarbuck (only on Saturday evening I think). She is absolutely terrible, how she ever got the job is beyond me!

As mentioned Boom Radio is good with some well known presenters, Angel Radio is similar and if you like the 60s Atlantis is very good all on DAB

The worst I've ever known on any station. Absolutely appalling.

The only thing left that is any good is Johnny Walkers sound of the 70s. I download stuff on BBC sounds like guy garveys finest hour and play it through bbc sounds during the week

You and I have exactly the same views/opinions on the Radio 2 line up. I almost exclusively now listen to Virgin Radio Anthems.

Ken’s departure was the death knell of R2 for my wife apparently.

    Zoe Ball - horrendous
    Jeremy Vine - sanctimonious prick

The new music quiz seems remarkably similar to the old Pop Master champion of champions which they used to do in December.

Did anyone hear the first contestant getting a top score of 65 this morning?

well radio 2 is dead to me now as week days their is not one presenter i would listen to, EXCEPT on sundays , when i am in the garage working on my cars, i time the days progress by lovesongs, ball , page and walker , now during the week its either my tidal playlists or mellow and in the car its mellow now too . but then again i am old :-)

If I lived to be 150, I'd still be too young for Radio 2!

Radio 6 Music / Radio 4 / Times Radio mostly (with a bit of LBC when I feel like shouting at the radio).

Ken has joined an independent Smashy and Nicey station, so you can catch up with him there.

Having worked all my adult life in an office, I have rarely listened to morning Radio past breakfast time.

I admit to listening to R2 Sounds of the Sixties on Saturday mornings. TB's corny jokes give me plenty of material to use at the vGTGs. And that was the soundtrack of my youth.

I do as well but he's no Brian Matthew.

Brian was the perfect DJ IMO. Great tracks played and interesting anecdotes.

    Ken can do one.
Gave him 22 years of my life and he's left us in the lurch.
Wish they had given the slot to Joe Whiley and just forgot about the quiz as the new one doesn't work.
Gary Davies is more than acceptable at the moment but not looking forwards to Vernon.
Not following Ken after his treachery.
In the minority of really liking Vine.
Scott Mills is insufferable and is like some hybrid radio1-radio 2 presenter.

I don't think Ken Bruce had much say in the matter. If I have it right, he more or less committed radio suicide when the heavy promos of his new prog started airing, so he was outed early.
He can think himself lucky he wasn't working for Radio Moscow!

He made the original decision to leave Radio 2
They decided to send him earl as you say was promoting the other thing and radio2 likely think it will encourage less people to switch if they have us desensitised to having someone else sans pop master.
TBH I'm like a jilted lover and hope his new show falls on it's arse.

Pretty sure that Ken has said his contract was expiring and as he'd not heard anything from the Beeb he made arrangements to move on, they belatedly then started talking about a new deal but too late as he'd made his mind up to go by then

I was finished with Radio 2 when they cancelled Brian Matthew for being too old, too white and/or too male. They replaced him with Tony Blackburn who ruined the tone of the show. Along with all the other cancellations since, it's no longer relevant to old farts like me. Boom Radio and Talk Sport are my choice these days.

Brian Matthew was a very good broadcaster in his day but Sounds of The Sixties was voice-tracked and sounded very scripted and perfunctory .. he'd definitely had his day. Ken is still in his prime though and a huge loss to the BBC.

Radio 4 or something on my media SD card in the car.

When I was a kid, my grandmother listened to R2 and it was for old people. Now and then, I give it a try on recommendations from people my age and it still sounds like it's for people decades older than me and I'm 60!

I'm in my late 50s and when I grew out of R1 many years ago I tried R2 but found it very bland and middle of the road, so switched to 6 music and R4

I've tried commercial radio but as per television the adverts annoy me within minutes.

I mainly listen to broadcasts via iplayer and depending on mood and location I'll switch between 6 Music and R4 with the addition of FLAC/MP3s of my own music.
