Thread: Best Sport documentaries?

    Best Sport documentaries?

Netflix seem to have found a winning formula with Sport documentaries. I'd much rather watch and hour of Drive to Survive than an hour of an actual Grand Prix. Same with Basketball, Golf and Wrexham FC. All things I've not really shown more than a passing interest in before but Netflix make a documentary and I'm hooked.

Anyone else prefer the back story to the main event?

Not a massive fan of American sports but I found the Michael Jordan series The Last Dance and also the documentary about Magic Johnson v Larry Bird bloody excellent.

All those already mentioned, but also Icarus on Netflix. it's about cycling (not something I have any remote interest in normally) but the way it's all been put together, and the story, makes for an incredible documentary.

    Several good ones already mentioned.

Free Solo is indeed brilliant but The Alpinist is much more hard core.

The Dawn Wall also a great climbing film.

I mentioned All In about Marc Marquez previously which is good.

Road is about the Dunlop family - Excellent and very poignant.

Have a listen to the “Socially distanced sports bar” podcast (started in lockdown hence socially distanced). It’s nominally a sports podcast but each week they have a sports doc on there (even if they go off on tangents which are very funny). Well worth a listen and gives good recos on sports docs including 14 peaks and free solo mentioned above.

Check out “Hoop Dreams” too. Incredible film.

Once in a Lifetime. The extraordinary story of the New York Cosmos.
Nowt to do with the fact that an old school mate was co-director of the film.

    Glad someone's mentioned this!

if you don't listen to podcasts then you can go on their website and look at the episode descriptions to find the documentaries discussed. Start at the start, I suggest!

Full Swing on Netflix is pretty good... made by the same people as Drive to Survive it has a very similar feel, although I don't think golf will ever be as exciting a subject matter as F1. I've not watched the tennis one, Break Point yet... supposed to be very good.

Also, the 'All or Nothing' series on Amazon Prime is well worth a watch. I'd strongly suggest watching the Man City series alongside 'Sunderland til I die'... it's a rather nice juxtaposition!

The Sunderland and Leeds ones were good.

Seems like since 2020 I’ve watched so many of these.

Full Swing is great. The tennis one decent but it’s quite repetitive. Just shows them either playing tennis or in a hotel room, infact it painted the life of a pro tennis player as being incredibly boring.

Another vote for Icarus. Great film that’s starts with cycling and ends up exposing the truth behind the Russian doping scandal.

Agreed that Netflix are onto something with these behind the scenes docuseries in F1, tennis, golf etc. I find it fascinating and almost sad to see how young these sports people are and how they just have to sink or swim. It just shows you that talent really isn’t everything.

Westside v the World, if you're into powerlifting. I'm not into powerlifting but thoroughly enjoyed the nitty gritty gym culture insight, and the life stories.

    Excellent recommendations!

Completely different but I also enjoyed the ‘Last Chance U’ series on Netflix. Especially the last two following the Huskies basketball team from East LA College.

    BT Sport

    As above
They make some surprisingly good stuff
The Football ones about the Wimbledon crazy gang, and the Ken Bates buying of Chelsea called 'Poundland' are very well made

Not a new docu/film by any means but Crash Reel is a great watch especially for those that are winter sports oriented. It's on the beeb just now

    Tremendous soundtrack too.

One of my favourite films ever. It is more than just about the rise of Windies cricket.

Other cricket films worth watching are ‘The Edge’ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9780416/) and the recent Amazon documentary about Ben Stokes (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21921074/).

Great soundtrack CD too (when CDs were a thing it was never out of my car).

I only came here to check that When We Were Kings and The Alpinist had been mentioned and they have so I'm happy.
One question though... I've done a tiny bit of sailing but really enjoy books about epic sailing events e.g. 'The Proving Ground' or 'A Voyage For Madmen' - are there any really good sailing documentaries?

The “four kings”if it’s not been mentioned already. Hagler, Duran, Leonard and Hearns and the era of boxing when fighters moved up and down divisions and fought each other. Superb.

Quite enjoying Race: Bubba Watson on Netflix currently.

Interesting to see the challenges faced by a man of colour in the southern states sport that is Nascar.
