    Rucksack suggestions

Looking for some suggestions from the collective wisdom of the forum I'm looking for a rucksack for daily use for work so not massive. Ideas I have are canvas or waxed canvas but would look at other suggestions

Brands I've looked at so far are trakke and millican but I'm looking for ideas I haven't thought of.

Budget is £100 and ideally under this would also consider used

If there's a thread with this in already point me in the right direction

    Thanks all

Commuting on public transport where you want to put it on the floor?

If so look for something with a small frame so it doesn't falls over.

I have an Osprey that works great for that & would sell.

Faling that I have a small Millican as no longer need to carry as much with me daily, think it is a 21L one, but will check. Fine for headphone case, cables, Mac, brolly and a few small bits but not if you need to carry posh shoes with you. This was why I went with the Osprey previously as needed the space.

    Osprey is a good recommendation.

Dell do really good backpacks for the money. I have two of these (once each). £25 BNIB on eBay or £48.88 on Dell with discount codes available.

I’ve just had a Thule Tact 21L delivered today. Thule are a very good brand. It’s over budget at £160 but there is also a 16L for £130. I ordered both but decided the 16L was too small.

I have a Millican roll top backpack in very good condition that I’ve been meaning to list for ages. I think it’s called ‘The Smith’ or something. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll dig it out.

    Goruck -
    Evergoods
    AER San Francisco
The Brown Buffalo (my personal favourite)
    Trakke
    Bedouin Foundry
    Mystery Ranch
    Triple Aught Design
    Arc’teryx
    Osprey
    Rofnia
    Alpha One Niner
    Recycled Firefighter
    Bellroy
    Goodwerks

That should get you started down the (very deep) rabbit hole :-)

Apologies I didn’t see your budget, which rules out a lot of these but nice to look at for ideas none the less

Not sure of the model name but saw a really nice one in the Barbour shop the other day. Might be worth a look.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Kriega are really well made but I can't wear comfortably over one shoulder and when I rode to a meeting once and had it with me the security guard quipped if I was going to use the lift or base jump back down afterwards.

    Rucksack suggestions

Filson do a nice small canvas/twill backpack, I got one a couple of years ago - it was in a sale, maybe discontinued but can recommend the brand anyway.

Very thick material and simple construction, also holds a surprising amount for its size.
    Looks just like this.

Edit - it’s called a bandera. If I remember right.

My favourite Millican in 25l guise as the roll top is very handy when you need the extra space, although with a tapered base they lean better than they stand up.

I've used a Wenger rucksack for 5 years and it's been brilliant. My only complaint is the memory foam back panel is comfy but makes you sweat so avoid grey shirts...

That’s weird. I realised this morning that I bought that exact bag as a consequence of a Millican PSA on here. Had it for about a year now and never come even close to using it in anger.

Edit: just checked online and it’s a bloody decent bag, listing at £125!

My daily bag is a Berghaus Centurion (notionally 50L) which I got from eBay. It can accept the side pouches from an army PLCE bergen if expansion is needed (they zip on / off). Cost was around £50.

Lots of good suggestions but no mention of Northface? I have two:

The Surge which has very good padded section for a laptop and lots of internal pockets for all sort of accessories.
    https://www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/...ariationId=KX7

And a Vault which is about the same size but without the technical Laptop specifics.
    https://www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

Both are excellent and very comfortable with enough space for a weekend or so away.

    Not a lot really
So we're looking at 19-26L in volume. If you're not looking to have a significant surplus of space for eg daytrips or weekend breaks, I'd say you shouldn't need more than 21-23L. Unless your laptop is a gaming or graphics performance machine, it's probably not biggier than 15", the great most of rucksacks should handle that no probs. Now you could narrow your choices down by the organisation (eg one bucket compartment vs more compartment pockets for separating food from documents from electronics etc) and style (eg urban vs tactical vs fashion vs retro etc), and maybe fabric if you have preferences (you said waxed canvas, I'd suggest you have a look at cordura, my fave big time).

Cotopaxi does canvas, eg this 24L Nazca but I'd say their style is kind of acquired taste, esp when it comes to colourways. Also, you might want to decide if you want to have any sweat-mitigating technology or if a simple plain back will do for your uses.

Edit: sorry, my previous link seems to be a nylon Nazca, this one is described as canvas: https://www.yoybuy.com/pd/CH8ahHIBbZ1MBMb96XBu.html

I have an Ogio renegade pro I believe it’s an older model than link.

    https://eu.ogio.com/en/gb/winter-sal...ceu213297.html

Lots of pockets and space, fairly bulky.

    And a Cotopaxi Luzon 24.

small light weight, crazy colours, very handy and bit of fun.

I've been using this £30 Jansben for several years for commuting and also hiking. It's waterproof and the rolltop makes it extremely versatile sizewise.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, didnt realise this could be as much of a rabbit hole, I'm already thinking of changing the budget

This is one of my favourites so far https://www.awaytravel.com/uk/en/tra...lor=navy_nylon

Also didn't realise millican have a new(ish) bag the core zip this in black is an option

This thread took me down a rabbit hole

Slightly different requirements as I carry quite a lot in and out of work (I move between sites and need various bits of IT) as well as lunch etc

I also like the ability to use it on short trips

Ended up with the one below but got it from Amazon Warehouse (a return) for £80 rather than £150 RRP

Just a suggestion...link. An interesting feature is what I take to be a zipped expansion option (see side pics), plus it has a sternum strap (IMO an essential as I occasionally like to load up my pack).

This arrived today and is fantastic - the only reason it was an Amazon Warehouse item was the clear plastic bag it’s parked in had a tear in it, the bag was brand new with tags and half price almost

Thule make great kit. I’ve had countless bags from them over the years. That’s a great saving on a new bag.

Even got a filson laptop case to be a bit more grown up but less utility and a lot heavier.

Used the green millican I already had but forgot was put away in the wardrobe Friday

Probably a bit big for daily use for my requirements and this might sound silly but I can't see green working with office wear for me. Friday was dress down so was ok

Going to look at millican 15litre bags in black grey or navy next as I do like the style

how is it with a heavy load on the small of your back?

I have found it hard to find a bag that has good cushioning on the bottom of the back
    against my back.

I’m off to India with work tomorrow so have all my IT and a few bits as hand luggage so will report back

Trying it on it seems fine but then I have broad shoulders and never really struggle with pressure on my back

I'm a big fan of Timbuk2 - really good designs, and build qulaity is excellent. I have a couple of different versions of their bags, and they have all held up well and are still marching on.

Its more a digging in pressure.
Might be due to the lack of structural rigidity of my old rucksack.

    thanks

Great catch, I was very seriously interested in that model about 1-2 years ago, but I can't remember what purpose I had in mind, probably some travel without airline cabin restrictions. At £80 I'd be buying it first and thinking what to use it for later.

@OP: Since you seem to be going for Lara Croft looks size-wise , you might also want to consider this Thule EnRoute: https://www.thule.com/de-de/backpack...-14l-_-3203589 (review: https://packhacker.com/travel-gear/t...-14l-backpack/)

I have a Tumi Alpha slim, bought in 2008. I've used it every day and its done hundreds of flights. It still looks almost like new. I broke a zipper puller a while back, emailed Tumi and they apologized and sent me a pack of 10 new zipper pullers. I think I will never need to buy a new backpack.

I use a Trakke Arkaig for work and it's a great bag. Also take it hiking as it's really comfy and robust.
If it had a side pocket for a water bottle it'd be perfect.

I had a Trakke and it was a super well made bag, very tactile, but not as practical as Millican and no sternum/waist straps. I haven't looked at their latest offerings but would try again if they'd improved those aspects.

Very happy with my Jack Wolfksin Perfect Day 'Snuggle Up' laptop bag which I've used for about 3-4 years now.

Simple, strong, comfortable and so far hard wearing 'canvas style' design, just the right amount of pockets and if you are commuting doesn't make you look like your hiking in the lake district on a school trip.
