    Six Nations 2023

    Unclealec's predictions:

    Finishing order-
    1. Ireland
    2. France
    3. Scotland
    4. Wales
    5. England
    6. Italy

    Possible surprises-
Today at WIS. On paper Ireland should walk it, but I wouldn't be that surprised if Wales' heart overcame Ireland's skill.

3, 4, & 5 are pretty much interchangeable. I don't expect much from England; hope I'm wrong, but if I were Mr. Borthwick I would be looking towards the World Cup, and using this year's 6 Nations as a trial/proving ground.

Let's see just how wrong I get it!

    Oh! well.
If any team can win with heart vs. craft, it is Wales. But not today unfortunately.

I think the 6 Nations/Grand Slam could be decided in Dublin next week, and I still fancy Ireland.

That was one tight looking Ireland. A well deserved win.

Quite an entertaining game all told.

Would have been even more so if Wales had managed to take some of their chances, I expect Ireland had another gear to go if needed though.

Indeed, we (Wales) weren't too clever at times to put it mildly, but apart from 5 or ten minutes each side of half time Ireland did everything they needed to do, and well. Still to see what France can do and England are always capable of taking it, but the smart money has to be on Ireland.

Yes, I felt that. Just like the AB's who they have supplanted at World No1, you think you have them on the ropes and they say "no, this is how it's done".

What a try indeed! Echoes of Jonah Lomu for pace and slipping through the defenders.

    That was exciting!

I did fancy Scotland again, but it could have gone either way.
That bit of individual brilliance from Scotland was worthy of winning any match.

Superb ambition from Scotland when they got the ball even on their own 22. Made it an exceptional game of rugby. England played well but opened up too easily by the Scots. I’d say on reflection Scotland just about deserved their win.

Ireland - the speed of their recycling from the ruck and taking the tackle two up to drive through. Superb cohesion and speed of phases. They are a very slick side.

England: flashes of brilliance but all too often we lose concentration and become exposed, Scotland exploited that to the full. What an historic triple win, well done Scotland - topped off with an individual try that will go on the top ten list. I think many people have forgotten Clive Woodwards similar type of try in 1981, but Van de Merwe's is in the modern era with better defence coaching. Chapeau!

So glad we get to see Duhan in a Edinburgh colours, he just powers through defenders, whilst wee Darcy jinks passed them, what a contrast in styles.

    Try of the championship already?

A man against wee boys it felt.

Scotland’s game plan worked well and England missing a true leader on the pitch to change things as they’re unfolding. Same as last two years.

Great game of rugby. Great result. Roll on next match.

It could have went either way but when Clive says Scotland were the better team I'll go with that.
I can't remember us looking as comfortable with ball in hand in all my years watching.
I think we mishandled a couple of times the whole game.

Agree handling was superb and I’d say we were easily the better team but had to score a great try in the last 5 mins to finally get nose in front - and even then it was squeaky bum last few plays till the final turnover sealed it.

England's attack created some well crafted tries, but the defence was abysmal. So many examples of players coming forward well out of the line only to be run clean round by the Scotland players, who took their chances very well.
I am heartened that England kept some accuracy, and for most of the game were making more metres with more of the ball than Scotland.
The difference was clean breaks. Scotland's missed tackles cost them 2m before the cover came in, it seemed every time England missed a tackle, it cost 20m, or a score.
For an England fan it is a crying shame that any pretence of chasing the chamionship is over on day one, just as it has been in the last couple of years. We really should be doing better.
I am glad that Scotland are playing well, it is a shame that Wales are not. Ireland look scary good, and we won't get any idea how fantastic France are from beating Italy tomorrow.
But I love the season the 6 nations, it charts the transition from winter into spring, one of the best bits of the year.

That’s when you can tell winter is coming to an end. The pubs are full of blokes wearing jeans and sheux shouting at the TV.

    Well, that was exciting!

For once Italy showed real promise, and it could genuinely have gone either way.

How lovely it woud be to have an actual Six Nations, instead of the usual Five-and-a-Half Nations.

Cap off to the Italians for today's performance.

Some signs of Improvement from England but I really think that a couple of forwards should make way for fresh blood, these little pop passes made by Sinclair are so scripted it's embarrassing and all this posturing when we win a penalty at a set piece, that's what you're there for, get on with it, quick play will catch the opposition out, not running in and slapping your team mates, that can wait until you win.
Our defence was woeful and sinfield must be pulling his hair out, Marcus Smith needs to change his game now and then, way too predictable.
Line out was a joke, we used to own set pieces, what's happened???
How in todays game can you score a try by beating 5 tacklers.

This is some battle going on in Dublin!

Shaping up to be one of the great games. You can't call it at half-time.

Superb, two excellent teams with equal spirit, breathtaking. That Ireland try in the corner wasn't one however, foot definitely in touch, and the French tackler was lucky to get away with a yellow, so I guess one all there.
As it stands at half time, I'd say whoever scores last wins.
An interesting aside, Shaun Edwards said beforehand that he thinks its the only time the worlds number 1 and 2 ranked teams have met in the Six Nations.

    A very good game.
Both teams are looking good in attack but seem to have openings in defence.

    Good game management by Ireland.
A good result for them, they look very dangerous

On ability of course. But they've not traditionally performed near their best at WC over the years.

So do Scotland double down on their win or do they do their traditional lose the second game thing?

Ireland are now heavy favourites after that win. France were good but Ireland just on another level.

Wow! The games so far in both rounds have been great to watch. Let’s hope that England don’t disappoint tomorrow

Absolutely - a great game of inspired play, rather than grinding it out.

Some very 'standout' players in the current team.

Reckon the Edinburgh pubs will get a bit of an uplift today!

The real rugby teams are still to be faced for Scotland in the shape of France and Ireland. They will provide the proper test of rugby.

Last week’s match went to the game plan given it was just England and Wales are so predictable.

Don’t misunderstand what I’ve said: I fully expect Scotland to get their arse kicked by the French and Irish - that’s the reality of being a fan of Scotland in all sports. We have a greater sense of reality and a true expectation unlike some nations who believe trophies are won before a ball is kicked based on nothing more than historic achievements. It’s comedic.

As a Scotland fan we realise we are VERY small fry but occasionally punch above our weight. We enjoy those moments but enjoy even more when the so called biggies fail from the dizzy heights of a zero start point. It’s part of the fun being a Scottish sports fan.

Jim, I think the current Scottish team is arguably the most enthralling I have had the pleasure to watch. My comment was because I am old enough to remember Jiffy playing (I even played at the same venue as him, albeit at a very different level in a game before the (then) 5 nations match between France and Wales). And as an open side flanker I watched how good fly halves played to see how I could ruin their day.
