Thread: Anyone else tried crickets?

    Anyone else tried crickets?

Not the game but the insect as a snack? This came about before xmas when the wife and my eldest were rather disgusted by the eating challenges on I’m a celebrity.
After i said that there was literally nothing i wouldn’t try within reason my son bought me these for my birthday this year. Id say if you can tuck in to a packet of pork scratching which is essentially pork fat cocked in even more fat then a packet of these isn’t that much of a step up.
They really are delicious and can highly recommend the sweet chilli and lime, BBQ ok but the peri peri is a bit fruity for my pallet.

To be fair I’d give them a go ,like you say we eat some Reyt junk .
I once went to hongkong and they had some proper weird stuff on the shelves .
    Enjoy

Yes, I've had them in Mexico as part of a main dish, and as a bar snack.

They are nice enough , but a little bit "zingy".

I’d potentially give it a go if I didn’t have to look at them. I’m guessing they are ‘whole’ crickets ???

Do you immobilise them before taking them out the bag? Haven't seen them up this way yet, but they'd more than likely be deep-fried first.

I once tried fried dog penis chopped into 1" lengths when in Bangkok. It was nothing special but it was ok.

Could you only manage 1” at a time?

Food wouldn't be the most unexpected or unwelcome place to find a penis in Bangkok.

I had a deep-fried Mars bar in Oban back in '97,'98.

Kidding aside: my kids and I ate candy with insects inside 15 yrs ago. Honestly, they tasted like nothing special. It's the idea of eating a critter that sets your mind in motion "No food!" We felt like heroes after we'd finished the candy. Or it was the sugar rush...

I'd try those ones but would struggle with the 'fresh' ones with lugs, heads and arseholes.

Crickets I found to be pretty nice actually. In Thailand we managed to buy a few snack packs of them in the 7 Eleven. Came in what looked to be crisp packets, nicely seasoned they were pretty tasty. I'd eat them a lot more if they were available here.

What I didn't enjoy however were the odd coloured sheets of something like rice paper you find in the airport cafes. When you're hungover and starving hungry they're a temptation - but tasteless, sticky and turn your teeth an odd colour.

    Crickets FTW

I've had the insect pick and mix in Thailand. With the flash frying and the seasoning you could be eating anything really.

The thought of eating a cricket triggers a red flag in my brain. However, rationally it's only social conditioning. I'm quite happy to eat cheap sausages and who knows what goes into them.

I was in a local restaurant in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh and the menu of unpalatable to the western diet type foods was incredible. I only took one pic of a fraction of the menu but I think you get the idea....

None of that looks, sounds too bad to me tbh...mind you my local bar serves brains, lamb or goat I think, as a tapas and they look exactly as you´d imagine, lined up in neat rows behind the perspex...I´ve not tried them yet.

Sago pupae are pretty grim and pop when you chew them, Locusts are just like crunchy prawns (and genuinely tasty), Crickets and Meal worms are not unpleasant either. Tried ants, tasted quite bitter due to the Formic acid in their sting/ bite. Worst tasting food I have ever eaten, without doubt, is Sürströming (think that’s how it is spelled), with fermented shark a close second. I was the only person in our team that didn’t bulk up eating Surstroming, truly awful. There are many YouTube videos of this being eaten - warning that many are NSFW.
When we travel I always try to sample local ‘speciality’ foods.

Tried some in Thailand from one of those stalls that flash fry them, along with meal worms.
I didn’t think they were too bad… but can’t say I’d rush to buy them again.

Someone once told me that the traditional way to ferment the shark was to bury it in the ground after weeing on it. Difficult to understand how these traditions get started.

Great snack in Mexico. Had some cricket soup and snacks. I liked it, but wouldn't try to get my hands on any if they were readily available.

I'm sure I've read that some toads do secrete a chemical which is a potent psychedelic...much like some indigenous tribes use the poison dart frog.

Aha...but how did they figure out which variety, someone musta kissed a lot of toads,

I’ve never tried one nor had the urge to do so. Having said that I popped in to a Pet shop this afternoon to get my dog his dried food only to be told they no longer currently sell it due to lots of faulty batches smelling of chemicals. She then suggested I try a premium product that she gives to all her dogs which has given amazing results. The main ingredient is ‘Crickets’ !!! Allegedly they’re a great source of nutrients and help relieve joint pain, slow down dementia and give a lovely lustrous coat. Based on this I decided to buy some and will trial it for a month and see how much better I feel and look and if the results are noticible then I might start giving it to the dog too !!!

The translation is correct, it's just not complete. If you add 'duà' to the end of it becomes toad fruit, which is an actual thing sold all over the place.
