    Passing it on...

Discussing the motivations for buying watches, in the other thread, I was reminded that a common justification that we've all succumbed to at one point or another is to justify an eye watering purchase by resolving to wear it and then pass it on to a child or significant other as a present at some point in the future. I also met a member the other day who was sporting a glorious Omega passed on from his father.

It struck me that this would make an excellent ongoing thread: photos of watches that have been passed on either from you or to you.

Now I'll have to find some...

I've got a few - one that came to me, and two that will be passed on.

The Rotary Aquaplunge belonged to my maternal grandfather. (I also have his wonderful Sheaffer Pen For Men fountainpen!) As yo can see it's had some use, but it still works. The strap is, of cou

These two I'll pass on - they have my two kids' names and birthdays in the papers. If you see them for sale then you'll know that the wolf is at the door.

    Passing it on...

I was given this by my father in about 1998.
He bought it new in about 1970 somewhere in the Lebanon.

Just had it serviced a week before Xmas and was told movement was in excellent condition, some very slight pitting to case appearing where caseback seals, but barely visible and still passed WR testing after a new gasket!!!

I have all my mums watches, she was a Tissot fan so I have 3 of those and a gold omega my grandparents bought her as a graduation gift back in the 60s.
Dont wear any as they're all too small for me but they're in the box just the same.

My dad is still alive and his watches will be passed on, a TT datejust my mum bought him in the mid 90s and his GS snowflake.

    That Rotary is cool!

My Submariner will go to my Daughter and my Speedmaster will go to my Son. I have a picture of me wearing the Sub sitting in the Hospital whilst my wife was in labour. I also have a pic of me wearing the Speedmaster next to my Son when he was less than an hour old.

Even if they dont like watches, each will provide some form of financial stability should they ever fall on hard times.

I reckon if I’d passed on any of the Rolex watches I’ve owned to my son he’d instantly sell it and use the proceeds towards a house deposit. And he likes watches! - I think we get misty eyed over passing our precious items down to the next generation, but at the end of the day it’s just stuff - in fact I’d be worried about him getting beaten up or mugged for something that’s now worth a small fortune, I’d rather just give him the money tbh!

My 15 year old has already been passed the T-Touch I bought off Alex, he loves it, he will get the Seadweller one day and my other lad will get my Speedmaster.

I was training a new starter at work yesterday and we got talking about watches, he told me he had passed on the Speedmaster that he inherited from his father to his son already, a 1964 Speedmaster ! I told him how rare and valuable that was now, obviously he didn't mind at all.
    Cheers..

I recently sold all my Rolexes so my son's will have to put up with Omegas!

    I have two inherited watches.

A Russian Poljot from my great uncle and my late Dad's Hamilton.

    Cheers,
    Neil.

    Here's two from my Grandfather.

A solid pink gold Eterna (even the pushers are gold) with rare a in house movement and neat art deco dial typeface, given by the factory to my Grandfather for his post war services in resettling and educating war orphans. He never wore it, considering it too ostentatious.

And his own personal watch. Flimsy, keeps appalling time but will never be sold.

My most precious watches aren’t my most expensive.
All passed down to me after they had passed away, not my usual thing but mean the world to me.
    My dear old Dads Timex

My Paternal Grandads old Sekonda, now there’s patina

My maternal grandads old kinetic seiko and Benson half hunter pocket watch

    My FILs Timex

No monetary value in these other than perhaps the Benson but you can’t buy what these give me. The memories and emotions that they evoke are priceless.

These 2 were both my maternal Grandfather's watches.

He gave me the Avia this had been his "work watch" he was an engineering foreman for the CEGB at a Coal fired power station he passed this to me whilst still with us when I was about 18.

When he passed my Nan gave me his Rotary which he considered to be his "nice" watch.
I believe he bought it post retirement in the 80s.

When my Mom passed away 4 years ago.
I decided then that I would pass on to each of my daughters a Rolex.
So they could have time to enjoy it while I was still alive.

It was my dream to have a watch passed down to me. But it wasn’t to be.
So I decided to do it.

Off course I hope that they will have many decades of faithful service.

But they also know, that it only materialistic item. And should they need funds for whatever reason. Then there is no issue with them selling it.

In that case it’s a 552, which started in 1958 (mine is from 1952-54).

But are you sure of the ref?

Ref 165-002. It’s marked inside the case back, typo above shows an extra 0.

Yes, that works. In fact had I paid more attention I would have seen it was an automatic and wouldn’t have tried to compare them. Sorry.

My maternal grandfather acquired this Elgin pocket watch 108 years ago, in 1915. As the janitor at a boy's school in Hudson Wisconsin, my grandpa loaned a 12 year-old school student, Chester Bridgeman, $2.00 and took Chester's Elgin pocketwatch as collateral. Chester later told grandpa to keep the watch, as his dad had bought him a new one. Chester and his family founded the chain of Bridgeman Ice Cream Parlor and Shoppes in 1936. The company still operates several locations in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, USA, although Chester passed away in 1957 and my grandpa in 1984.

My grandpa Ted Suennen had only a sixth grade education, but he later was a partner in a downtown hardware store in Hudson. He was elected president of the National (USA) Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) in 1943-1944.

This is a photo of my grandpa and grandma in Kansas City in 1944 receiving a Sterling silver gift from the association (NRHA) for his service to the organization. I still have this Sterling set today.

Thanks anyway. Both the dial layout and the printing style of the 12 O'Clock sub-dial made me wonder whether it could have Universal Geneve/Martel origins (they also made chronographs for Vacheron, Jaeger, Girard-Perregaux & Eberhard) but it looks like yours probably has a Valjoux 71 (there's another nomenclature, 704E, which is perhaps the Eterna in-house reference).

I think I’ve still got a couple of Casio F91Ws about in their sealed boxes. The kids can have those.

I have a couple of Rolex LVs that if I don’t need to cash in with a lot of others, they will be left to my son and daughter.

If I’m very lucky I might be left my father’s original Pepsi GMT, but I’ll assume it will be left to one of my, not really into watches, brothers just in case.

Ive gone off the idea of buying something like a birth year watch for a child, or even selecting something and putting it away. I’m more inclined to think that of its a watch a child associated with their parents they would cherish it more. If I was left an expensive watch with no real association, then I’d likely sell it for for something I’d like to wear and remember the family member that left it to me in that way.
It's just a matter of time...

  37. #37
My dad bought this just before I was 1, & later giving to me on my 18th. Probably the watch I knew growing up and got me into watches as a whole.

Now days I wear it as my running watch, but still prefer it to any G Shock for functionality.

They have a slight 'cult' following and pretty much doubled in money if I were to sell it. I never will and love all the scratches, marks and dinks it has.

I did treat my dad to this at Christmas

I bought this when my daughter was born

pretty much been my daily watch the last 3 1/12 years, and would never part with it, she knows it as mine and recognises it when we go into watch shops. She can have it one day if she wishes and doubt it would be worth much.

2nd child due imminently & debating what to purchase to mark this occasion. 2 are leading the pack, but decision time soon.

My dad also will be passing the Sub down to me at some point, although he may by pass me and give to one of his grandchildren!
