Thread: Favourite watch purchase of 2022 ?

Favourite watch purchase of 2022 ?

I have had a few watches come and go this year, so rather than a SOTC I wanted to share my favourite 3 pieces, which are are all linked by stand-out dials.

    Smiths Everest Silver Jubilee.
Was delighted to be able to order one of these in one of the limited Timefactors opening windows. Was unsuccessful a couple of times, but got the routine down to about 40sec including bank authorisation. The Everest is great, was a little concerned it was too small initially as the domed sapphire makes the dial look smaller than it actually is, but after a few hours on the wrist it just feels comfortable. There is a reason the Explorer 1 is an all time classic.

    Farer Charlton GMT Atlantic Blue
Whilst this isn’t the biggest watch in my collection, it wears big with a case of 41mm and a large dial. But what a dial - difficult to capture in pics, but it is a deep metallic turquoise that is different to the bezel-less Lander that is Farer’s best seller. I think it makes a fantastic summer watch with the white on the bezel and dial furniture.

    Grand Seiko SBGA415
Last but not least is a Grand Seiko winter seasons collection. This ticked a lot of boxes for me with spring drive, titanium and the interesting 62GS case shape. I have been really impressed with the accuracy and whilst previously having been put off spring drives with the power reserve on the dial, in reality it does not stand out as much as in pictures. Obviously the dial and finishing on the markets is exquisite, and really catches the light against the overall mid-grey tones.

So what has been the best purchase for you this year ?

This, literally it has just arrived. I've been after this for obout a year now so I'm happy as Larry.

Has to be this for me. Had been looking for a vintage sub and this popped up on SC. Was even better in the flesh ! Original MK3 dial, matching unmolested hands, original pip, even came with decent chamfers. You just don’t find these in untouched condition often.

My Tudor Black Bay 41mm, blue bezel, is the best buy this year for me. It has stormed to the top of my rotation, ahead of a Monaco, a DJ41, a James Cameron, a 2254, a Moonwatch & an El Primero. The Tudor represents great value, great looks & great performance in all circumstances.
There's still a week for an FXD to steal the title but the BB41 is, so far, the stand out buy for me this year.
    Happy Christmas to all!

This is my favourite, that has arrived during the year. A couple of other watches have been paid for, but won’t arrive until next year.

Apparently I've had it since September 2021 .. where does the time go? I could do with it running backwards for a bit

Call me boring, but this one has me considering selling up and living life as a normal 1-watch person

Difficult to pick just the one.

Acquired two long term neo vintage targets in a Doxa Spirotechnique and a 1000m Beuchat Ushuaia but these don’t tend to get too much wrist time. Easier to pick a daily contender so probably the ubiquitous BB58. Struggled to bond at first, but have since paired it with a Forstner Oyster and it’s one I can’t see me moving on. Well I say that, but I’d still like to try the blue dial version and not sure I can justify two in the box.

Now that is a thing of beauty, wear it in good health sir.

Blown away by this one and on the hunt for a GMT now. Picture really doesn’t do the finishing and dial justice.

A couple of long-term grails arrived this year - and no way to choose a favourite from this brace of shiny-beauts!

...and as the pictures demonstrate, both well beyond my ability to photograph competently!

Annoyingly the timing of the picture shows a covered hand.

It has been a very quiet year for me, sold a few but only one modest incoming but it has become a firm favourite

    Sinn 903 for me.

Although the watch I wear the most, also a '22 acquisition, the CW C63 GMT.

Its got to be my SBGC247

SGBC247 by Simon Gee, on Flickr

if I ever get my Dornbluth 99.4 back from a dial change then that may have pipped it but since DHL are idiots, that won't be seen this year.

A few new ones this year, most notable and probably the "best" is a Planet Ocean but the favourite is hands down the Ming 37.05. Incredibly difficult to photograph thanks to the domed crystal and the sapphire layer on the dial but this watch is simultaneously quietly understated and of a really complex design, I love it!

  31. #31
Probably a bit boring but I have found this to be a bit of a Goldilocks watch.

But the 5235r is the favourite acquisition from this year.

My most notable is the A Lange got swapped for a Royal Oak, the Lange offered much more on paper, but this was a cerebral to pure desire swap.

Definitely this. Most money I have ever spent on a watch but it's an absolute keeper. Not once have I had second thoughts. Just checked it against my phone and it changed exactly the same time and I set it when.... Don't know but it was a long time ago.

It has to be my Sinn 903:

It was also my only watch in 2022. I must say I really like it.

I've had a few ins and outs this year but the latest (as in delivered today) is my favourite. Been looking at these for the past few years and finally managed to bag one:

It’s between the Wempe and a Seiko SPB143. I did regretfully sell the Seiko but am now after another one, so I’ll post the Wempe which I still have.

A very quiet year for me (but with hopes that the New Year will bring a nice Sinn Arktis into my collection). A superb PRS-54 from Eddie's stable.

Got this March time. Tritnova 16610.
Quickly became my Mon to Fri watch and it’s pretty much perfect for what I need.
Still got the green caseback sticker and unpolished.

I only bought 2 watches this year. Something of a record.

The Seikona is great, but the Tudor Snowflake is really something.
