I wonder if it was he who recently opened the wooden weir upstream and emptied the lake, thus making the ford a lot deeper -- briefly.

There is actually very little upstream of the ford. The stretch of river upstream is no more than 100 yards or so long and is fed by a weir (with an adjustable wooden flow control board) from the lake that was built to feed the mill next to the ford.

The board is normally kept in place to keep the depth of the lake reasonable. More water flows over the weird after heavy rain, thus making the ford deeper at times.

However, someone recently wound up the wooden weir board and let the lake mostly drain. It could have been a act of random vandalism or it could have been someone who thought that it would make the ford deeper. Indeed, it would have made it deeper but only for a short while, while the lake drained!

Once the board was put back in place (and I believe the mechanism padlocked), the lake refilled and the ford was back to its normal variable self, depending on rainfall and thus outflow from the lake.

(I know all of the above only from the various YT videos on the subject).

This one is with the ford clearly marked at three feet, yet amazing how people attempt it (and fail), often in expensive cars:

Many years ago I had a Jag S-Type R - and unfortunately got caught in a flood with it. I would say the water was about eighteen inches deep. There was a dull thud, and £16k of damage was done to the engine...

Anyone else had similar, or just enjoy the vids!
This one was hilarious! There was someone in the back, maybe a fare as well.

There was also one which I can’t find now of a biker heading into at full tilt, got stopped dead and ended up on the other side of the ford 4 somersaults later.

    Are they waterproof though?

Well done Sir, I see what you did there !!

I’ve often thought people can’t really be that stupid…
I’ve also seen the same rotund chap in the orange T-shirt in several different vehicles.
Perhaps the R reg Escort may have been an insurance scam ??
A tank of fuel must be more than the car is worth.

As a result of the closure, I’ve seen at least one video by a self proclaimed “auditor” questioning the presence of the Police and asking them why they were parked across the Ford with their engine on. Surely it’s self explanatory that the Police were there to ensure nobody attempted to cross the Ford. Also their engine was on so that they could stay warm. I’m sure that without the presence of the Police, some of the locals would have removed the cones so that they could collect more footage of unfortunates getting stranded.

It does seem wasteful and unnecessary to me for a police car to be positioned there with today's limited budgets, surely. Perhaps an audit of spending priorities and techniques is justified.

I think one will find it illegal to have one's engine running in a parked car.

Maybe emergency vehicles are exempt from that?

Is youtube ad revenue based on length of video? All these people seem to make 20 minute videos with about 5 minutes of actual content.

This one popped up on my youtube feed today. I think this is the second MX-5 I’ve seen having no problems getting through. Not sure how they are managing it where others fail?

The first guy in the Audi though “that’s the second time I’ve done that, totalled a car previously here”…how stupid can you get?

This is interesting, and well worth four minutes of your time:

So clever my foot fell off.
