Thread: NATO / Perlon on a deployant?

  1. #1

NATO / Perlon on a deployant?

Has anyone here put a deployant clasp on a cut-down nato or a perlon?

I can't help thinking it really would be the best of all possible worlds.

All I want to do it cut the one-piece buckle off a classic NATO, remove the "underflap" (making it a RAF-style single pass strap), fit deployant, centre the clasp on the back of my wrist opposite the watch head and job done.

This thread on WUS shows it's not only possible but practical and pretty.

Eddie used to sell a nylon strap on deployant for use with spring bars
But it does not offer the safety of the standard NATO that said nor would one on a deployant
Would that sort of thing work?

Surely just cutting the buckle off would allow a regular deployant clasp to be fitted, in the same way one would fit it to a regular 2 piece strap. I think I'm going to try it, love a deployant. Eddie's 2 piece ones were great, nice clasp which needed a bit of light fettling to remove a couple of sharp corners but tremendous value.

My thoughts exactly. I have some nice old Phoenix straps that I've already "circumcised" so I think I'll see if I can get a nice 20mm deployant.

I’d worry that the clasp wouldn’t hold the tail of the strap securely enough (I presume most are designed for leather straps with deeper holes in thicker material) so that every time you take the watch off, the tail will unthread from the clasp. It could become a bit of a faff and I, for one, would forget and drop my watch every day until I put a proper nato back on!

I happened to watch this video the other day (set at the correct point) where he shows a Nato/deployant combo on his Longines

Well, I splashed out a couple of quid on a cheap 20mm clasp, found an old strap: et voila!

I'm pretty pleased with the outcome: the clasp adds a little weight and bulk but not much. And I think I'll trim the tail. But on the whole (hole?) I think it's a winning combo.

    This is awesome.

22mm deployant just landed so, will be installed on a NATO tomorrow, things are looking encouraging.

Lightly scour the shiny bits and you are there.

That looks fantastic. Could you please give pointers to the suppliers, for those of us who want to copy your work ;-)

Sure, the strap was an old one I had in my box. I've since trimmed the tail so there's no excess overhang. The clasp was just a cheap ebay job:

To be honest when it comes to deployants I think I prefer the single foldover versions (a la Omega et al.) rather than these "butterfly" sort but both are fine.

I cut the extra flap off the NATO as there’s now no need for it. Because 1.) the watch ain’t gonna slip off with the clasp fitted. And 2.) doing so allows you to centre the clasp on your wrist directly opposite the watch.

In an ideal world someone would make a deployant specifically for one-piece nylon / perlon straps: a screw-in (not spring) bar where the buckle was and lower clearance on the part that clips through the hole on the non-buckle side (nylon straps being much thinner than leather or rubber). That really would be perfect.

But I've worn this all day and loved it: easy on/off, comfortable, light weight, low profile and secure.

Thanks. I like the security of a NATO, but the texture and "faf" is usually off-putting. I noticed in one of your pics, that the lack of strap thickness was an issue. I wondered if you could double the strap back through the buckle part of the clasp, making the strap effectively twice as thick and solving the problem. Then cut off the excess strap and seal the open cut with heat ? That would get rid of the flap and the flop at the same time ;-)

    Cheers.

The thinness of the strap isn’t really an issue except that the clasp is designed for a thicker band so the part that clips on is taller than it need to be for a ~1mm nylon. In terms of the “tail” I suppose I could cut off flush with that part of the clasp and dispense with it altogether but that would leave no room for expansion (say, if I wanted to lengthen it and wear it over a jacket, although I can’t see that happening.)

    It's the Dennison DENCO53

I'm in two minds about it, though, so it might end up on SC!

Thanks, I hadn't heard about these before! Interesting to see the Dennison name revived.

With such wide price differences I cannot see them lasting very long. Pity.
