    16613 offered check on legitimacy/value

Hi guys been offered from friend of friends bi metal sub, bit bashed up serviced by Meeks in Birmingham but no papers.

Think it needs a new gold crown and a tidy up but it’s a good price so wondered what views are? If this isn’t ok you can delete it’s a genuine query so I don’t get mugged off..

Really struggling with pics but can message with them if anyone want to help!

    Thanks. Guys

Regardless of the quality of pics it sounds like a 'well-worn' example to put it mildly. The question I would ask myself is 'do I really want a bimetal Sub' and if the answer is 'yes' I would look for a really good example......which this one isn't. If you're not careful you'll end up putting more money into it than you really want to, and it still won't be as good as a watch that's led an easy life! If the only reason you're considering is because it's been offered cheap I would think again.

A neighbour of mine has a very 'well- worn' (knackered) bimetal Datejust that I could buy cheaply as a fixer upper to make money on, but I reckon he'd need to give it me extremely cheap for it to be worthwhile, even with my capabilities.

Everything on a bimetal Sub will be dearer than the steel one, it's a big mistake to think a 'service' will transform a battered mess into a virtually mint watch. If the bezel needs replacing and the bracelet needs major restoration it isn`t going to be a cheap watch.

Sorry to sound like I`m pissing on your fireworks but that's the reality, cheap bargains in the Rolex world rarely turn out to be cheap.

Whats a good price you have been offered? so a comparison can be made against condition and lack of B&Ps.
    Cheers,

    Just say no.

A 'friend of a friend' does not sound like a reliable source, there's a huge number of fakes out there.

If it's cheap it's likely fake, it's not hard to sell a Rolex so why would they need to sell it to you for cheap?

If it's not cheap it's still got a good shot at being fake and from an unknown source, so why not just buy from somewhere legit?

Sorry guys should have been more clear. She’s a dealer. It was serviced in Birmingham last week at Meeks? They surely wouldn’t service a fake there’s papers from this. Offered at £6500

Interesting concept giving the watch a buff up with sandpaper.

A dealer in what sense? She has a website? A store front? A VAT registration and listed on companies house?

Why is it so cheap if she's a dealer? Is she bad at her job?

My 2 cents, this whole scenario reeks.

OP’s lost his sense of smell?

To proceed with this deal requires a degree of expertise and judgement that the OP clearly lacks, this ‘opportunity’ is one for those who know what they’re doing and if you fall into that category you don’t have to ask for advice.........I rest my case!

    Links seem odd
    Definitely led a hard life
It has a general loss of sharpness to the case
As everyone else has said need better pics too judge. Also if your goal for the watch is to wear as it is condition wise then I could understand you considering the purchase but if it’s a fix a upper don’t do it

When did watch-makers become experienced at identifying fake bracelets, fake cases, renumbered cases, generic bezel inserts etc ?

    Never.

I'd expect them to notice if the 3135 calibre weren't a genuine one, but there are plenty of those knocking around in bad watches.

Fair points I appreciate the honesty. She has serials and insurance valuation I have pics but I’m iPhone only like a peasant and it insists on low res pics! Which is not making my life easy

1989 L serial for 6500. And I do like bi Metal!

I think the insert is bad (look at the surround on that pip!) and the dial is ready for the bin.

Throw in the incorrect crown with a bracelet slacker than a tramp’s pants and you’ve got a watch that’s not worth buying even without the problems we can’t see.

  26. #26
It’s why I put it in here. I haven’t seen it in person, someone offered it to me so I asked a forum where people know better than I do. So I appreciate the honestly and feedback and I’ll pass on it.

That’s just from one pic. It will need a Rolex service to get a new crown, thread and stem which will be £600 plus the cost of the crown and likely recommended glass, bezel, insert and bracelet…….. the bezel insert is fake and that bracelet looks like scrap.

Would you suggest potential water damage on that dial?

    Still bad pictures.

    But you can already see:

    1. Winding crown should be 18K, now it's steel
    2. Bezel pearl is all wrong. It's the whole bezel insert.

Impossible to say anything about the dial as there is not enought lighting exposure.

The case looks genuine but this example has been butchered badly. That's why it's so cheap.

    I'd just stay away.

So something like this then? A wee bit toppy on price. But perhaps how it was meant to look.

I follow this page, not sure if you do, but they frequently find obscure fake parts on Rolex watches. Amazing to see. This one is a seconds hand but they've even had fake bracelet pins.

Some might say that she has been no friend to you.

Some might wish to know her name, if she is a dealer.

Some might say you owe her no loyalty.

    Who is she ?
