    Request software advice

Hi... I need to get some software that will allow me to clone one external hard drive to another. I know that this can be done (after a fashion) with sync toys - I have been using it so far - but it's oh.... so...... bloody.... slow..... I don't want to use cloud storage because the cloud is only space on a server in some remote server farm, owned and maintained by God alone knows who, and worst case anything could happen to it. Now ideally it will be freeware (I know... I know..) but I am prepared to pay a reasonable amount for the right program. Grateful for any suggestions.

I use Acronis True Image, not freeware but a 1 year licence is only around £50. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

I think access to that software is free if one purchases a new SSD as it allows the cloning of the HDD to the SDD, so, maybe, for £50ish one could acquire software and SSD??

I can vouch for this as well - I've cloned at least a dozen drives over the years
Just make sure that you download the right (free) version - there's a few through which to navigate on the site.

    Good luck.

Clonezilla. Free and relatively easy to use. Just make sure the destination disk is the same size or larger than the source.

I'm a layman but years and years back on a Mac IRC channel this is what was recommended and I've stuck with it since. Not used often but never had a single issue.
