Just back from a 360 mile round trip to drop my youngest off for freshers weeks at Sheffield Uni.
Very sad to see him go, but lovely to see him embark on the next stage of his life.
He has a nice room on campus and his housemates are really friendly, which seems a good sign.
I hope, for your sake, they don't support the f***ing monarchy !! 😂😂😂😂
He will be fine. mine is three years in and starting his Masters. He will make mates and love it.
Second year for our youngest although a 40 mile round trip for us.
Sad last year as he was the last of three and the house was very quiet. But, beer fridge is loving the rest, food bills halved, no noise in the middle of the night and don’t even get me started on the drop in energy and water consumption.
Miss him loads though.

My lad was dropped off for his first year a week ago 272 mile round trip, he has ASD and really struggles in social situations but seems to be doing well having made some friends in his halls, and already has a full social schedule, he’s asked me a few times how he should act or behave in different situations which is great as it shows he’s trying to put the effort in.
His room looked nothing like the pictures online, but he doesn’t care although my wife wasn’t impressed.
Next Sunday we are passing close by so will take him out for a meal, and no doubt another food shop, even though we spent more on his food than I would for thr four of us for a fortnight last time we took him shopping so I doubt he’s running low, but the wife does like to panic.
Well done on your son Bloater…. You must be very proud

It’s quite and adjustment when they bugger off, it’s ok to feel a bit sad and a bit of pride too!
We took our daughter to Bournemouth on Friday. She took a year out as she was studying during Covid and struggled quite a lot.
She has a lovely room, private ensuite. The apartment has four other rooms and a decent kitchen and dining area. Student accommodation has certainly come on since my time!
We stayed overnight in a local hotel and went out with her for a final dinner. The original plan was to leave her to it, but her flat mates all went out with their parents so good job we did stay!
We visited again Saturday morning to see how she had decked out her room and to set up her IT.

Took first born to Bristol on Saturday (450 mile round trip) for her final year, she’s on a 4 year course with a year in France, thanks to covid, she’s spent more time in Bordeaux than Bristol, sad to see her go, hopeful she’ll have a proper Uni experience this year.
It did make me smile seeing so many other packed family cars on the motorway and it did take me
back to my own time sat in a packed Ford escort with all the excitement and fears bubbling up inside me whilst my mum and dad tried to make small talk. I never realised the emotional roller coaster my parents were on until I had to ride it myself!
Dropped our eldest daughter at Birmingham on Friday.
She’d taken a year out to save & travel … & wait until regular face to face tuition restarted.
She chose Nando’s for the evening meal, then we stayed local to get groceries the following morning.
As others have mentioned - wife stocked her up with more than we have at home.
Staff at Birmingham Uni were brilliant - and the student volunteers helping her move in were great too.

My son did the same - 4 years at Bristol University studying French and had his year abroad at Bordeaux too. Had a fantastic time. I only went over the once when he moved there as our second trip was cancelled when we went into lockdown. He’s now just finished his 1st year in London on a grad programme and loving it.Originally Posted by Barton Red

Took ours to Sheffield 3 weeks ago for start of Yr2. Your's is a wee jaunt in comparison - over 550 miles for us.
First year in 6, I'm NOT doing the uni run this time of year as younger daughter finished this Summer and elder daughter 2 years before that. One in Devon and the other in the Home Counties, so it wasn't too bad travel wise. It could've been much worse; one of my friends lives in Cambridge - daughter at Exeter, son at Durham!
In contrast, my eldest left university 4 months into Covid - by the sounds of it he had a miserable time whilst he was there - and after leaving didn’t stop working in various casual jobs before landing himself a decent job (which could lead into a solid career) about 6 months ago. He has an impressive work ethic which emerged during that time - in fact he has a second job a couple of nights a week he does because he enjoys it. I don’t think further education suits everyone!

Longest Uni trip I did was taking my eldest to Queensland in Australia when she started her second degree.
Not this year as my boy is doing an internship with a company in Milton Keynes, but we still had to transport some of his stuff.
Next year we no doubt will need to return him to Swansea for his final year. Hopefully!

Train (Darlington to Kings Cross) the first time with all my 'stuff'. Thumbing it up and down the A1 therein after.
Laptop, 32 inch monitor, PS5, two pillows, duvet, sheets, towels. And that before clothes, shoes, coats etc.
Manage to fill our V70.
It’s a different world now … I just had a suitcase of clothes …
