    V778 retention document

I’ve put my private plate on my sons car for his 18th birthday
But the v778 is still in my name
My lads asked how will the v778 have his name on it
    Anyone know ?
    Cheers all

The retention document becomes null and void once the plate is on the car, as the reg is no longer on retention.

The new V5 will have the new reg on, and if your son owns the car, his name will be on it.

    That is my understanding.

That’s right John, the plate has now been assigned to a vehicle so is part of that vehicle. The retention certificate is no longer valid.

Should you wish to put the on-site on retention at any future date, a new certificate will be issued (once the fee is paid) which will have the name of the registered keeper of the vehicle on it.

That's correct. The V778 is the holding form for the mark before assignment. The keeper of the vehicle will receive an updated V5 with the new mark and there 778 is no longer needed. If you wanted to retain the mark in future it would be assigned and a new 778 issued.

Cheers. So if my son takes the private plate of his Corsa he will get a v778 in his name ?
    Thanks

If the mark is removed from the vehicle it will be assigned to a v778 addressed to the keeper as listed on the V5
